INSPECTION
1. INSPECT SPEEDOMETER ON−VEHICLE:
Using a speedometer tester, inspect the speedometer for allow-
able indication error and check the operation of the odometer.
HINT:
Tire wear and tire over or under inflation will increase the indica-
tion error.
If error is excessive, replace the speedometer.
Standard indicationAllowable range
2018 − 24
4038 − 44
6058 − 66
8078 − 88
10098 − 11 0
120118 − 132
2. INSPECT NO.1 VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR OPERA-
TION
(a) Connect the positive (+) lead from battery to terminal 1 and negative ( −) lead to terminal 2.
(b) Connect the positive (+) lead from tester to terminal 3 and
the negative ( −) lead to terminal 2.
(c) Revolve shaft.
(d) Check that there is voltage changer from approx. 0 V to 11 V or more between terminals 3 and 2.
HINT:
The voltage change should be 4 times per each revolution of
the No.1 vehicle speed sensor shaft.
If operation is not as specified, replace the sensor.
3. INSPECT TACHOMETER ON−VEHICLE:
(a) Connect a tune− up test tachometer, and start the engine.
NOTICE:
Reversing the connection of the tachometer will damage
the transistors and diodes inside. When removing or instal-
ling the tachometer, be careful not to drop or subject it to
heavy shocks.
(b) Compare the tester and tachometer indications.
If error is excessive, replace the tachometer.

CO/HC
INSPECTION
HINT:
This check is used only to det ermine whether or not the idle CO/
HC complies with regulations.
1. INITIAL CONDITIONS
(a) Engine at normal operating temperature
(b) Air cleaner installed
(c) All pipes and hoses of air induction system connected
(d) All accessories switched OFF
(e) All vacuum lines properly connected
HINT:
All vacuum hoses for EGR systems, etc. should be properly
connected.
(f) SFI system wiring connectors fully plugged
(g) Ignition timing set correctly
(h) Transmission in neutral position
(i) Tachometer and CO/HC meter calibrated by hand
2. START ENGINE
3. RACE ENGINE AT 2,500 RPM FOR APPROX. 180 SE-
CONDS
4. 4.INSERT CO/HC METER TESTING PROBE AT LEAST
40 cm (1.3 ft) INTO TAILPIPE DURING IDLING
5. IMMEDIATELY CHECK CO/HC CONCENTRATION AT IDLE AND/OR 2,500 RPM
HINT:
When doing the 2 mode (2,500 rpm and idle) test, follow the
measurement order prescribed by the applicable local regula-
tions.
