Safety Belt Reminder Light
When the key is turned to
ON or START, a light will
come
on for about eight
seconds to remind people to
fasten their safety belts.
Unless the driver’s safety
belt
is already buckled, a
chime will also sound.
Charging System Light
This red light will come on
briefly when you turn on the
ignition, but the engine is
not running, as
a check to
show you it is working.
Then it should
go out when
the engine starts.
If the light stays on or comes on while you are driving,
you may have a problem with the electrical charging
system. It could indicate that you have
a loose generator
drive belt or another electrical problem. Have
it checked
right away. Driving while this light is
on could drain
your battery.
If you must drive a short distance with this light on, be
certain to turn
off all your accessories, such as the radio
and air conditioner.

Engine Coolant Temperature Gage
This gage shows the engine coolant temperature. If the
gage pointer move to the
H (red) side, your engine is too
hot! It means that your engine coolant has overheated
and you should stop your vehicle and turn
off the engine
as soon as possible.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp

of your fuel,

control systems. This red
light should come

If it does not come on at all, have it fixed right away. If
it stays on, or comes on while you are driving, the
computer is indicating that you have a problem. You
should take your vehicle in
for service soon.
NOTICE:
If’ you keep driving your vehicle with this light on,
after a while the emission controls won’t work
as
well, your fuel economy won’t be as good and your
engine may not
run as smoothly. This could lead to
costly repairs not covered by your warranty.

Engine Oil Pressure Light
If you have a problem with
your oil, this red light may
stay on after you start your
engine, or come on when
you are driving. This
indicates that there is not
enough pressure to keep
your engine properly
lubricated and cool.
The engine could be low on oil, or have some other oil
related problem. Have
it fixed right away.
The oil light could also come on in three other
situations.
When the ignition is on but the engine is not running,
the light will come on as a test to show you it is
working, but the light will go out when you turn the
engine to START.
If it doesn’t come on with the
ignition on, you may have a problem with the fuse
or
bulb. Have it fixed right away.

Fuel Gage Here are four concerns some owners have had about the
fuel gage. All these situations are normal and do not
indicate that anything is wrong with the fuel gage.

Your fuel gage shows about how much fuel is in your
tank. When the gage first indicates
EMPTY (E), you
still have a little fuel left (about one or two gallons), but
you need
to get more right away. At
the gas station, the fuel pump shuts off before the
gage reads
FULL (F).
It takes more (or less) fuel to fill up than the gage
reads. For example, the gage reads half full, but it
took more (or less) than half
of the tank’s capacity to
fill it.
The gage moves a little when you turn, stop or speed
UP-
When you turn the engine off, the gage doesn’t go
back to EMPTY (E).

Tips about Your Audio System
Hearing damage from loud noise is almost undetectable
until it is
too late. Your hearing can adapt to higher
volumes
of sound. Sound that seems normal can be loud
and harmful to your hearing. Take precautions by
adjusting the volume control
on your radio to a safe
sound level before your hearing adapts
to it.
To help avoid hearing loss or damage:
Adjust the volume control to the lowest setting.
Increase volume slowly until you hear comfortably
and clearly.
NOTICE:
Before you add any sound equipment to your
vehicle
-- like a tape player, CB radio, mobile
telephone or two-way radio
-- be sure you can
add what you want.
If you can, it’s very
important to do it properly. Added sound
equipment may interfere with the operation
of
your vehicle’s engine, Delco’ radio or other
systems, and even damage them. And, your
vehicle’s systems may interfere with the
operation of sound equipment that has been
added improperly.
So, before adding sound equipment, check with
your dealer and be sure to check Federal rules
covering mobile radio and telephone units.

Avoid needless heavy braking. Some people drive
in spurts -- heavy acceleration followed by heavy
braking
-- rather than keeping pace with traffic. This
is a mistake. Your brakes may not have time
to cool
between hard stops. Your brakes will wear out much
faster if
you do a lot of heavy braking. If you keep pace
with the traffic and allow realistic following distances,
you will eliminate
a lot of unnecessary braking. That
means better braking and longer brake life.
If your engine ever stops while you’re driving, brake
normally but don’t pump your brakes. If
you do, the
pedal may get harder
to push down. If your engine
stops, you will still have some power brake assist. But
you will
use it when you brake. Once the power assist is
used up, it may take longer to stop and the brake pedal
will
be harder to push.
Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS)
Your vehicle has an advanced electronic brahng system
that can help
you keep it under control.
Here’s how anti-lock works. Let’s say the road is wet.
You’re driving safely. Suddenly an animal jumps out in
front
of you.
You slam on the brakes. Here’s what happens with ABS.

Braking in Emergencies
At some time, nearly every driver gets into a situation
that requires hard braking.
You have the rear-wheel anti-lock braking system. Your
front wheels can stop rolling when
you brake very hard.
Once they do, the vehicle can’t respond to your steering.
Momentum will carry it in whatever direction it was
headed when the front wheels stopped rolling. That
could be
off the road, into the very thing you were trying
to avoid, or into traffic.
So, use a “squeeze” braking technique. This will give
you maximum braking while maintaining steering
control. You
do this by pushing on the brake pedal with
steadily increasing pressure. When
you do, it will help
maintain steering control.
In many emergencies, steering
can help you more than even the very best braking.

If you lose power steering assist because the engine
stops or the system is not functioning, you
can steer but
it will take much more effort.

Driving on Curves
It’s important to take curves at a reasonable speed.
A lot of the “driver lost control” accidents mentioned on
the news happen on curves. Here’s why:
Experienced driver or beginner, each
of us is subject to
the same laws
of physics when driving on curves. The
traction
of the tires against the road surface makes it
possible for the vehicle
to change its path when you turn
the front wheels.
If there’s no traction, inertia will keep
the vehicle going in the same direction.
If you’ve ever
tried
to steer a vehicle on wet ice, you’ll understand this.
The traction you can get in
a curve depends on the
condition of your tires and the road surface, the angle at
which the curve is banked, and your speed. While
you’re
in a curve, speed is the one factor you can
control.
