JUMP STARTING
If your battery has run down, you may want to use another vehicle and
some jumper cables to start your Cadillac. But please
follow the steps
below
to do it safely.
t
I
A CAUTION:
Batteries can hurt you. They can be dangerous because:
They contain acid that can burn you.
They contain eas that can explode or ignite.
They contain enough electricity to burn you.
If you don’t follow these steps exactly, some or all of these things
can hurt you.
r TO JUMP START YOUR C2DILLAC:
1. Check the other vehicle. It must have a 12-volt battery with a negative
ground system.
223
Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine 2. Get the vehicles close enough so the jumper cables can reach, but be
sure the vehicles aren’t touching each other. If they are, it could cause
a ground connection you don’t want.
You wouldn’t be able to start
your Cadillac, and the bad grounding could damage the electrical
systems.
A CAUTION:
You could be injured if the vehicles roll. Set the parking brake
firmly
on each vehicle. Put an automatic transaxle in “P”
(Park).
3. Turn off the ignition on both vehicles. lbrn off all lights that aren’t
needed, and radios. This will avoid sparks and help
save both
batteries. And it could
save your radio!
4. Open the hoods and locate the batteries:
A CAUTION:
An electric fan can start up even when the engine is not running
and can injure you. Keep hands, clothing and tools away
from
any underhood electric fan.
Find the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on each battery.

If you’re not going to drive your vehicle for 25 days or more, take off the
black, negative
(-) cable from the battery. This will help keep your battery
from running down.
I
A CAUTION:
Batteries have acid that can burn you and gas that can explode.
You can be badly hurt
if you aren’t careful. See “Jump Starting”
in the Index for tips on working around a battery without
getting hurt.
Contact your dealer to learn how to prepare your vehicle for longer
storage periods.
Battery Power Loss
If you lose battery power or the battery is disconnected, your car’s
computer must be programmed. It takes just over’20 minutes to
do it. If
you want to
do it yourself, here’s how:
0 Apply the parking brake.
Make sure the front wheels are straight.
0 Turn off the Electronic Climate Control.
Start the engine in “P” (Park) and let it idle for 15 minutes. Then:
Put your foot on the brake pedal, shift the transaxle to @ and let it
idle for
3 minutes or more. Do not accelerate the engine. Then:
With the car in @ (Drive), turn the Electronic Climate Control to
“Auto” and let the engine
idle for 3 minutes or more.
Turn your engine off.
Now your computer
is programmed.
