Lights: Are they all working? Are the lenses clean?
Tires: They are vitally important
to a safe, trouble-free trip. Is the
tread good enough for long-distance driving? Are
the tires all inflated
to the recommended pressure‘?
Weather Forecasts: What’s the weather outlook along your route?
Should you delay your trip a short time to avoid
a major storm
system?
Maps: Do you have up-to-date maps?
ON THE ROAD
Unless you are the only driver, it is good to share the driving task with
others. Limit turns behind the wheel
to about 100 miles (160 km) or two
hours at a sitting. Then, either change drivers or stop for some
refreshment like
coffee, tea or soft drinks and some limbering up. But do
stop and move around. Eat lightly along the way. Heavier meals tend to
make some people sleepy.
On two-lane highways or undivided multilane highways that do not have
controlled access, you’ll want
to watch for some situations not usually
found on freeways. Examples are: stop signs and signals, shopping centers
with direct access to the highway,
no passing zones and school zones,
vehicles turning left and right
off the road, pedestrians, cyclists, parked
vehicles, and even animals.
HIGWAY mPlVOSIS
Is there actually such a condition as “highway hypnosis”? Or is it just
plain falling asleep at the wheel? Call it highway hypnosis, lack
of
awareness, or whatever.
There is something about an easy stretch
of road with the same scenery,
along with the hum
of the tires on the road, the drone of the engine, and
the rush
of the wind against the vehicle that can make you sleepy. Don’t
let it happen to you! If it does, your vehicle can leave the road in less than

WINTER DRZVTNG
Here are some tips for winter driving:

snow, but may have to travel over ice, you may not want

window as necessary.
3. Try to keep your engine under load (in a drive gear where the engine
runs slower).
If you no longer have the overheat warning, you can drive. Just to be safe,
drive slower
for about ten minutes. If the warning doesn’t come back on,
you can drive normally.
If the warning continues, pull over, stop, and park your vehicle right
away.
If there’s still no sign of steam, you can idle the engine for two or three
minutes while you’re parked, to see
if the warning stops. But then, if you
still have the warning, TURN
OFF THE ENGINE AND GET
EVERYONE OUT OF THE VEHICLE until it cools down.
You may decide not to lift the hood but to get service help right away.

How to Add Coolant to the Radiator
-
1. You can remove
the radiator
pressure cap when
the cooling
-I
1
(Don’tt press down while turning the pressure cap.)
If you hear a hiss, wait for that to stop. A hiss means there is still some
pressure left.
2. Then keep turning
the pressure cap,
but now push
down as you turn
it. Remove the
pressure cap. system, including
the radiator
pressure cap and
upper radiator
hose, is no longer
hot. Turn the
pressure cap
slowly to the left
until it first stops.

on the coolant
recovery tank, but
leave the radiator
pressure cap off.
6. Start the engine
and let it run until
you can feel the
upper radiator
hose getting hot.
Watch out for the
engine
fans.
7. By this time the coolant level inside the radiator filler neck may be
lower.
If the level is lower, add more of the proper mix through the
filler neck until the level reaches the base
of the filler neck.

A CAUTION:
You can be burned if you spill coolant on hot engine parts.
Coolant contains ethylene glycol and
it will burn if the engine
parts are hot enough. Don’t spill coolant on
a hot engine.
Should a low coolant condition
exist, an overheat protection “Limp
Home” feature of the
4.6L Northstar allows alternate firing groups of
four cylinders for a predetermined number of cycles to prevent engine
damage, enabling your vehicle
to be driven to the nearest service center.
