1764-1. Driving the vehicle
RAIZE_OM_General_BZ358E
NOTICE
⬛If you feel the clutch is slipping (Manual transmission vehicles)
Have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer as soon as possible. If your
vehicle does not accelerate by stepping on the accelerator pedal even when
the clutch is engaged, the clutch ma y be slipping and the vehicle may no
longer be able to run.
⬛To prevent damage to the tu rbo system (Turbo vehicles)
⚫Immediately after driving at high speed or climbing on a hill, do not stop the
engine. Make sure to idle the engine for approx. 1 minute to cool down the
turbo system, and then stop the engine.
⚫Do not use any parts other than those specified for the exhaust pipes.
⚫Never alter the exhaust pipes.
⚫Never race or accelerate suddenly when the engine is cold.
⚫Make sure to change the oil periodically. ( ➞P. 418)
⬛When encountering flooded roads
Do not drive on a road that has flooded after heavy rain, etc. Doing so may
cause the following serious damage to the vehicle:
⚫Engine stalling
⚫Short in electrical components
⚫Engine damage caused by water immersion
In the event that you drive on a flooded road and the vehicle is flooded, be
sure to have your Toyota dealer check the following:
⚫Brake function
⚫Changes in quantity and quality of oi ls and fluids such as engine oil,
transaxle oil, and differential oil
⚫Poor lubrication of the bearings and joints, etc.

4-6. Driving tips
Winter driving tips
Carry out the necessary preparations and inspections before driving
the vehicle in winter. Always drive the vehicle in a manner appropri-
ate to the prevailing weather conditions.Preparation for winter
⚫Use fluids that are appropriate to the prevailing outside temperatures.
⦁ Engine oil
⦁ Coolant
⦁ Washer fluid
⚫Have a service technician inspec t the condition of the battery.
Before driving
Perform the following according to the driving conditions:
⚫Do not try to forcibly open a window or move a windshield wiper that is
frozen. Pour warm water over the frozen area to melt the ice. Wipe away
the water immediately to prevent it from freezing.
⚫To ensure proper operation of the air conditioning system fan, remove
any snow that has accumulated on the air inlet vents in front of the
windshield.
⚫Check for and remove any excess ice or snow that may have accumu-
lated on the exterior lights, vehicle’s roof, around the tires or on the
brakes.
⚫Look under the vehicle and check that there are no ice blocks around
the ground. Remove any attached ice blocks with great care to avoid
damaging vehicle components. Also check that the pedals and steering
wheel move smoothly.
⚫Remove any snow or mud from the bottom of your shoes before getting
in the vehicle.

Do-it-yourself maintenance
⚫What about do-it-yourself maintenance?
Many of the maintenance items are easy to do yourself if you have a little mechanical
ability and a few basic automotive tools. Simple instructions for how to perform them
are presented in this section.
Note, however, that some maintenance task s require special tools and skills. These
are best performed by qualified technician s. Even if you are an experienced do-it-
yourself mechanic, we recommend that repairs and maintenance be conducted by
your Toyota dealer who will keep a record of maintenance on your vehicle. This
record could be helpful should you ever require Warranty Service.
⬛Does your vehicle need repairs?
Be on the alert for changes in performance and sounds, and visual tip-offs that
indicate service is needed. Some important clues are:
⚫Engine misses, stumbling or pinging
⚫Appreciable loss of power
⚫Strange engine noises
⚫A fluid leak under the vehicle (However , water dripping from the air condi-
tioning system after use is normal.)
⚫Change in exhaust sound (This may indica te a dangerous carbon monoxide leak.
Drive with the windows open and have th e exhaust system checked immediately.)
⚫Flat-looking tires, excessive tire squeal when cornering, uneven tire wear
⚫Vehicle pulls to one side when driven straight on a level road
⚫Strange noises related to suspension movement
⚫Loss of brake effectiveness, spongy feeling brake pedal or clutch pedal (vehi-
cles with a manual transmission), pe dal almost touches the floor, vehicle
pulls to one side when braking
⚫Engine coolant temperature continually higher than normal
If you notice any of these clues, take yo ur vehicle to your Toyota dealer as soon
as possible. Your vehicle may need adjustment or repair.
WARNING
⬛If your vehicle is not properly maintained
Improper maintenance could result in serious damage to the vehicle and pos-
sible death or serious injury.
⬛Handling of the battery
Battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead and lead com-
pounds which are known to cause brain damage. Wash your hands after han-
dling. ( ➞P. 321)
