In these or similar operating conditions, have the
interior air Nlter, air Nlter, engine oil and oil Nlter,
for example, changed more frequently. If subject
to increased stress, check the tires more. Further

ist workshop.
Battery disconnection periods
The ASSYST PLUS service interval display can cal-
culate the service due date only when the battery is connected.
Display and note down the service due date
on the instrument display before disconnect-

If the Maintenance Management service is activa-
ted, relevant data is automatically transferred to
the Mercedes-Benz customer center.
The customer center transmits the data to the
service partner that you have entered on the Mercedes me website at: http://
www.mercedes.me. You will then receive individ-
ual recommendations regarding the maintenance of your vehicle.
\bThe calculation of the optimal transmission
time of the maintenance request to the service partner is subject to technical limita-
tions that may cause the maintenance recom-
mendation to be perceived as too early or too
late or not to be made at all. In this case, you
can conveniently arrange a maintenance
appointment with the customer center via the
maintenance reminder in the multimedia sys-
tem.\bMaintenance Management and the mainte-
nance reminder in the multimedia system are not available in every country. Contact anauthorized Mercedes-Benz Center to Nnd out
whether this function is available in your coun-
try.
Data transferred when using Maintenance Man-
agement

required scope of maintenance as well as mal-
function detection and malfunction rectiNcation.

The vehicle can detect if certain wear parts need
to be replaced or if malfunctions have occurred in
vehicle systems. If the Telediagnosis service is activated, relevant data is automatically transmit-
ted to the manufacturer. If fault conditions are
detected by the vehicle system self-diagnosis, the system transmits recommendations for action to
the Mercedes-Benz customer center depending on the fault detected. The customer center trans-
mits the data to the service partner that you have entered on the Mercedes me website at: http://
www.mercedes.me.
For selected faults, the notiNcation that a mal-
function has been detected may appear in the multimedia system with a request to contact the
Mercedes-Benz customer center. From this mes- sage, a call can be made directly to the customercenter for assistance.\bThe transmission of a notiNcation to the multi-
media system depends on the country, vehi- cle model and equipment and requires a fast
data connection, over which the service pro-
vider has no inOuence.\bReliable fault detection is subject to technical
limitations. Therefore, only a limited selectionof faults can be detected and recommenda-tions for action transmitted to the customer
center and the service partners. Mercedes- Benz AG is continuously working on theexpansion of this service. The fault detection
depends on the country, vehicle model and equipment.

Opening and closing the hood
&WARNING Risk of accident due to driving
with the hood unlocked
The hood may open and block your view.
Never release the hood when driving.Before every trip, ensure that the hood is
locked.&WARNING Risk of accident and injury
when opening and closing the hood
The hood may suddenly drop into the end position.
There is a risk of injury for anyone in the
hood\bs range of movement.
Do not open or close the hood if there is a person in the hood\bs range of move-

&WARNING Risk of burns when opening the
hood
If you open the hood in the event of an over- heated engine or Nre in the engine compart-
ment, the following situations may occur:
= You may come into contact with hot gases.
= You may come into contact with other
escaping hot operating Ouids.
Before opening the hood, allow the
engine to cool down.In the event of a Nre in the engine com-
partment, keep the hood closed and call
the Nre service.&WARNING Risk of injury due to moving
parts
Components in the engine compartment may continue to run or start unexpectedly even
when the drive system is switched oM.
Observe the following if you must open the
hood:
Switch oM the vehicle.Never touch the danger zones surround-
ing moving components, e.g. the rotation
area of the fan.Remove jewelery and watches.Keep items of clothing and hair away from moving parts.&WARNING Risk of injury from touching live
components
The ignition system and the fuel injection sys- tem operate with a high voltage. You could
receive an electric shock.
Never touch components of the ignition
system or fuel injection system when the vehicle is switched on.The live components include the following, for
example:
= Ignition coils
= Fuel injectors=Electric lines to the ignition coils and the fuel
injectors&WARNING Risk of burns from hot compo-
nent parts in the engine compartment
Certain component parts in the engine com-
partment can be very hot, e.g. the engine, the
cooler and parts of the exhaust system.
Allow the engine to cool down and only
touch component parts described in the
following.&WARNING Risk of injury from using the
windshield wipers when the hood is open
If the windshield wipers start moving when the
hood is open, you could be trapped by the wiper linkage.
Always switch oM the windshield wipers
and the vehicle Nrst if you need to open

Opening the hoodTo release the hood, pull on handle 1.Push yellow handle 2 on the hood catch to
the les as far as it will go (palm downwards).
Lis the hood until it is automatically raised by
the pneumatic spring.
Closing the hood
Lower the bonnet and let it drop from a height
of approximately 8 in (20 cm).If the hood can still be lised slightly, open the
hood again and close it with a little force until it engages correctly.
Engine oil

q Checking the engine oil level using the on-
board computer
Requirements
= The engine has been warmed up.
= The vehicle is parked on a level surface.
= The engine is running at idle speed.
= The hood is closed.
The engine oil level is determined during driving.
Determining the engine oil level can take up to
30 minutes with a normal driving style and even longer with an active driving style.

Engine Oil Level
One of the following messages will appear on the instrument display:
= Measuring Engine Oil Level... : measurement
of the oil level is not yet possible.Repeat the request aser a maximum of
30 minutes\b driving.
= Engine Oil Level OK and the bar display for
indicating the oil level on the instrument dis-
play is green and is between "min" and "max": the oil level is correct.
= Engine Oil Level Add 1,1 qts. and the bar dis-
play for indicating the oil level on the instru- ment display is orange and is below "min":
Add 1.1 US qt (1 l) of engine oil.
= Reduce Engine Oil Level and the bar display
for indicating the oil level on the instrument display is orange and is above "max":
Drain oM any excess engine oil that has been
added. To do so, consult a qualiNed specialist
workshop.
= For Engine Oil Level Switch Ignition On
Switch on the vehicle to check the engine oil
level.
= Engine Oil Level System Inoperative : The oil
level sensor is defective or not connected.
Consult a qualiNed specialist workshop.
=
Engine Oil Level System Currently Unavail.
Close the hood.

Certain component parts in the engine com-

cooler and parts of the exhaust system.
Allow the engine to cool down and only

engine oil
If engine oil comes into contact with hot com- ponent parts in the engine compartment, it
may ignite.
Make sure that no engine oil is spilled next to the Nller opening.Allow the engine to cool oM and thor-
oughly clean the engine oil from compo-
nent parts before starting the vehicle.*NOTE Engine damage caused by an incor-
rect oil Nlter, incorrect oil or additivesDo not use engine oils or oil Nlters which
do not correspond to the speciNcations
explicitly prescribed for the service inter- vals.Follow the instructions on the service
interval display for changing the engine
oil and observe the prescribed change

much engine oil
Too much engine oil can damage the engine or
the catalytic converter.
Have excess engine oil removed at a
qualiNed specialist workshop.\bDepending on driving style, the vehicle con-
sumes up to 0.9 US qt (0.8 liters) of oil per 600 miles (1,000 km). The oil consumptionmay also be higher than this when the vehicle
is new or if you frequently drive at high engine
speeds.Turn cap 1 counter-clockwise and remove it.Add engine oil.Replace cap 1 and turn it clockwise until it
engages.Check the oil level again (  page 266).Checking the coolant level&WARNING Risk of scalding from hot cool-
ant
If you open the cap, you could be scalded.
Let the motor cool down before opening
the cap.When opening the cap, wear protective
gloves and safety glasses.Open the cap slowly to release pressure.&WARNING Risk of burns from hot compo-
nent parts in the engine compartment
Certain component parts in the engine com-
partment can be very hot, e.g. the engine, the
cooler and parts of the exhaust system.

Park the vehicle on a level surface.Check the coolant temperature display on theinstrument display.
The coolant temperature must be in the bot-
tom quarter of the temperature indicator.Slowly turn cap 1 counter-clockwise to
release overpressure.Continue turning cap 1 counter-clockwise
and remove it.
The coolant level is correct in the following cases:
= If the engine is cold, the coolant is up to
marker bar 2.
= If the engine is warm, the coolant is up to
0.6 in (1.5 cm) over the marker bar 2.
If necessary, reNll with coolant that has been
approved for Mercedes-Benz.\bFurther information on coolant (  page 339).
ReNlling the windshield washer system

Certain component parts in the engine com-
partment can be very hot, e.g. the engine, the
cooler and parts of the exhaust system.

windshield free of deposits, e.g. ice, snow or
leaves.
Checking the brake lining thickness
Bring the vehicle and wheels into a suitable
position so that you can position the gage.\bMeasuring point 3 for the test gage depends
on the equipment. The gage is positioned at
point 3, which is located either in the center
of the brake lining or at the upper end to the side, depending on the brake caliper.Switch oM the vehicle.Secure the vehicle against rolling away.Take the gage out of the vehicle document
wallet in the glove compartment.Place the test gage between the wheel spokes
at measuring point 3 on the brake lining.Hold the gage vertically to brake disc 1 and
slide measuring pin 2 onto brake disc 1.Check which color Neld 4 the arrow on
measuring pin 2 is pointing to.
Green: the brake lining thickness is suPcient.
Red: the brake lining thickness is not suP-
cient. Have the brake linings checked at a
