SITTING IN THE CORRECT
POSITION
WARNING: Sitting improperly, outof position or with the seatback reclinedtoo far can take weight off the seatcushion and affect the decision of thepassenger sensing system, resulting inserious injury or death in the event of acrash. Always sit upright against yourseat back, with your feet on the floor.
WARNING: Do not recline the seatbackrest too far as this can cause theoccupant to slide under the seatbelt,resulting in personal injury in the eventof a crash.
WARNING: Do not place objectshigher than the top of the seat backrest.Failure to follow this instruction couldresult in personal injury or death in theevent of a sudden stop or crash.
When you use them properly, the seat,head restraint, seatbelt and airbags willprovide optimum protection in the eventof a crash.
We recommend that you follow theseguidelines:
•Sit in an upright position with the baseof your spine as far back as possible.
•Do not recline the seat backrest so thatyour torso is more than 30 degreesfrom the upright position.
•Adjust the head restraint so that thetop of it is level with the top of yourhead and as far forward as possible.Make sure that you remaincomfortable.
•Keep sufficient distance betweenyourself and the steering wheel. Werecommend a minimum of 10 in(25 cm) between your breastbone andthe airbag cover.
•Hold the steering wheel with your armsslightly bent.
•Bend your legs slightly so that you canpress the pedals fully.
•Position the shoulder strap of theseatbelt over the center of yourshoulder and position the lap straptightly across your hips.
Make sure that your driving position iscomfortable and that you can maintain fullcontrol of your vehicle.
HEAD RESTRAINTS
WARNING: Fully adjust the headrestraint before you sit in or operate yourvehicle. This will help minimize the riskof neck injury in the event of a crash. Donot adjust the head restraint when yourvehicle is moving.

REAR SEATS
Folding the Seat Backrest
WARNING: Do not drive yourvehicle with a seat that is unlatched orin the folded position. Failure to followthis instruction could result in personalinjury or death in the event of a suddenstop or crash.
WARNING: Do not fold a seat if itis occupied. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injury.
WARNING: To prevent possibledamage to the seat or seatbelts, makesure that the seatbelts are not fastenedbefore folding the seatback.
1.Before folding the seat backrest, stowthe seatbelt in the stowage clip. Thisprevents the seatbelt from gettingcaught in the seat latch.
2.Fold the outermost head restraints andpull the center head restraint up to thefirst locked position. See HeadRestraints (page 141).
Note:If you have head restraints that donot fold, move the front seats forward toavoid interference between the front andrear seats. This allows the rear seat backrestto be properly folded.
3.Press the button at the top of the seatbackrest.
4.Push the seat backrest forward.

5.If you have folding head restraints,make sure they do not interfere withthe seat cushion when folded. Thisallows the seat backrest to be properlystowed.
Unfolding the Seat Backrest
WARNING: Do not place cargo orany objects behind the seat backrestbefore returning it to the original position.Pull on the seat backrest to make surethat it has fully latched after returningthe seat backrest to its original position.An unlatched seat may becomedangerous if you stop suddenly or havea crash.
WARNING: When unfolding theseat backrests, make sure that theseatbelts are not trapped behind theseat.
WARNING: When folding orunfolding the seats, take care not to getyour fingers caught between the seatbackrest and seat frame. Failure tofollow this warning could result in seriouspersonal injury.
Pull the seat backrest up to unfold it. Whenraising the seat backrest, make sure theseat latch engages.
HEATED SEATS (IF EQUIPPED)
WARNING: Use caution when usingthe heated seat if you are unable to feelpain to your skin because of advancedage, chronic illness, diabetes, spinal cordinjury, medication, alcohol use,exhaustion or other physical conditions.The heated seat could cause burns evenat low temperatures, especially if usedfor long periods of time. Failure to followthis instruction could result in personalinjury.
WARNING: Do not place anythingon the seat that blocks the heat, forexample a seat cover or a cushion. Thiscould cause the seat to overheat. Failureto follow this instruction could result inpersonal injury.
WARNING: Do not poke sharpobjects into the seat cushion or seatbackrest. This could damage the heatedseat element and cause it to overheat.Failure to follow this instruction couldresult in personal injury.
Do not:
•Place heavy objects on the seat.
•Operate the heated seat if water or anyother liquid spills on the seat. Allow theseat to dry thoroughly.
The engine must be running to use thisfeature.

Ignition Modes
The keyless starting system has threemodes:
Off: Turns the ignition off.
•Without applying the brake pedal,press and release the button oncewhen the ignition is in the on mode, orwhen the engine is running but thevehicle is not moving.
On: All electrical circuits are operationaland the warning lamps and indicatorsilluminate.
•Without applying the brake pedal,press and release the button once.
Start: Starts the engine.
•Press the brake pedal, and then pressand hold the button until the enginestarts.
STARTING A GASOLINE
ENGINE
When you start the engine, the idle speedincreases. This helps to warm up theengine. If the engine idle speed does notslow down, have your vehicle checked byan authorized dealer.
Before starting the engine, check thefollowing:
•Make sure all occupants fasten theirseatbelts.
•Make sure the headlamps andelectrical accessories are off.
•Make sure the parking brake is on.
•Make sure the transmission is in park(P).
Vehicles with an Ignition Key
Note:Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
1.Fully press the brake pedal.
2.Turn the key to the start position tostart your vehicle.
Note:The engine may continue crankingfor up to 15 seconds or until it starts.
Note:If you cannot start the engine on thefirst try, wait for a short period and try again.
Vehicles with Keyless Start
Note:Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
1.Fully press the brake pedal.
2.Press the push button ignition switchuntil the engine starts.
The system does not function if:
•The passive key frequencies arejammed.
•The key battery has no charge.

Park (P)
WARNING: Shift into park (P) onlywhen your vehicle is stationary.
In park (P) power is not transmitted to thedriven wheels.
Note:A tone sounds if you attempt to exityour vehicle without the vehicle in park (P).
Note:Your vehicle may not shift out of park(P) if the 12 V battery has run out of charge.
Note:Your vehicle may not shift out of park(P) if a fuse is blown.
Note:Your vehicle may not shift out of park(P) unless the key or remote control is insideyour vehicle.
Note:The electronic parking brake couldapply when you power your vehicle on withthe selector in park (P).
Note:The electronic parking brake couldapply if you shift to park (P) without fullypressing the brake pedal.
Note:The electronic parking brake couldapply if you shift to park (P) on a slope.
Note:Do not manually release the parkingbrake when the selector is in park (P).
Note:Your vehicle could shift into park (P)if you attempt to exit your vehicle withoutthe vehicle in park (P). See How DoesAutomatic Return to Park (P) Work.

Automatic Return to Park
What is Automatic Return to Park (P)
Your vehicle shifts into park (P) if youattempt to exit your vehicle without thetransmission in park (P).
How Does Automatic Return to Park (P)Work
Your vehicle shifts into park (P) when yourvehicle is stationary and any of thefollowing occur:
•You switch the vehicle off.
•You open the driver door with the driverseatbelt unfastened.
•You unfasten the driver seatbelt whenthe driver door is open.
Note:Do not use automatic return to park(P) when your vehicle is moving, except inan emergency. See Starting and Stoppingthe Engine (page 165).
Automatic Return to Park (P) Limitations
Automatic return to park (P) may not workif the door ajar sensor or seatbelt sensorare malfunctioning.
See an authorized dealer if any of thefollowing occur:
•Seatbelt indicator illuminates or tonesounds with the seatbelt fastened.
•Door ajar indicator does not illuminatewith the driver door open.
•Door ajar indicator illuminates with thedriver door closed.
•Transmission not in park messageappears, with the driver door closed,after you shift out of park (P).
Reverse (R)
WARNING: Shift into reverse (R)only when your vehicle is stationary.
In reverse (R) power is transmitted to thedriven wheels.

developed sufficient torque to prevent yourvehicle from rolling down the slope. Thisis an advantage when pulling away on aslope, for example from a car park ramp,traffic lights or when reversing uphill intoa parking space.
The system activates on any slope thatcauses your vehicle to roll.
Note:There is no warning light to indicatethe system is either on or off.
Using Hill Start Assist
1.Press the brake pedal to bring yourvehicle to a complete standstill. Keepthe brake pedal pressed and shift intofirst gear when facing uphill or reverse(R) when facing downhill.
2.If the sensors detect that your vehicleis on a slope, the system activatesautomatically.
3.When you remove your foot from thebrake pedal, your vehicle remains onthe slope without rolling away forabout two to three seconds. This holdtime automatically extends if you arein the process of driving off.
4.Drive off in the normal manner. Thesystem releases the brakesautomatically.
Note:When you remove your foot from thebrake pedal and press the pedal again whenthe system is active, you will experiencesignificantly reduced brake pedal travel. Thisis normal.
Switching the System On and Off
When you switch the ignition on, thesystem automatically turns on. You cannotturn the system on or off.
AUTO HOLD
WARNING: The system does notreplace the parking brake. When youleave your vehicle, always apply theparking brake.
WARNING: You must remain inyour vehicle when the system turns on.At all times, you are responsible forcontrolling your vehicle, supervising thesystem and intervening, if required.Failure to take care may result in the lossof control of your vehicle, seriouspersonal injury or death.
WARNING: The system will turnoff if a malfunction is apparent. Failureto take care may result in the loss ofcontrol of your vehicle, serious personalinjury or death.
The system applies the brakes to hold yourvehicle at a standstill after you stop yourvehicle and release the brake pedal. Thiscould be beneficial in certain situations, forexample when waiting on a hill or in traffic.
Switching Auto Hold On and Off
Press the button on your console to accessauto hold on the touchscreen.
Note:You can only switch the system onafter you close the driver door, fasten yourseatbelt and start the engine.
