cautions to ensure your driving
enjoyment and to help prevent the
closure of areas to off-road vehi-
cles:
 Drive your vehicle only in areas
where off-road vehicles are per-
mitted to travel.
 Respect private property. Get
owner’s permission before enter-
ing private property.
 Do not enter areas that are
closed. Honor gates, barriers
and signs that restrict travel.
 Stay on established roads. When
conditions are wet, driving tech-
niques should be changed or
travel delayed to prevent dam-
age to roads.
WARNING
QOff-road driving precautions
Always observe the following precau- tions to minimize the risk of death, serious injury or damage to your vehi-
cle:
ODrive carefully when off the road. Do not take unnecessary risks by
driving in dangerous places.
ODo not grip the steering wheel
spokes when driving off-road. A bad bump could jerk the wheel and injure your hands. Keep both hands
and especially your thumbs on the outside of the rim.
OAlways check your brakes for effec-tiveness immediately after driving in sand, mud, water or snow.
OAfter driving through tall grass, mud, rock, sand, rivers, etc., check that there is no grass, bush, paper,
rags, stone, sand, etc. adhering or trapped on the underbody. Clear off any such matter from the
underbody. If the vehicle is used with these materials trapped or adhering to the underbody, a break-
down or fire could occur.
OWhen driving off-road or in rugged
terrain, do not drive at excessive speeds, jump, make sharp turns, strike objects, etc. This may cause
loss of control or vehicle rollover causing death or serious injury. You are also risking expensive damage
to your vehicle’s suspension and chassis.
NOTICE
QTo prevent the water damage
Take all necessary safety measures to ensure that water damage to the hybrid battery (traction battery),
hybrid system or other components does not occur.
OWater entering the engine compart-
ment may cause severe damage to the hybrid system.
OWater entering the hybrid transmis-sion will cause deterioration in transmission quality. The malfunc-
tion indicator may come on, and the vehicle may not be drivable.
OWater can wash the grease from wheel bearings, causing rusting and premature failure, and may
also enter the hybrid transaxle case, reducing the gear oil’s lubri-cating qualities.

QWhen you drive through water
If driving through water, such as when
crossing shallow streams, first check the depth of the water and the bottom of the riverbed for firmness. Drive
slowly and avoid deep water.
QInspection after off-road driving
OSand and mud that has accumu- lated around brake discs may affect braking efficiency and may damage
brake system components.
OAlways perform a maintenance
inspection after each day of off- road driving that has taken you through rough terrain, sand, mud,
or water.

QFront side windows water-repel-
lent coating (except quarter win- dow)
OThe following precautions can extend the effectiveness of the water-repel-lent coating.
• Remove any dirt, etc., from the front side windows regularly.• Do not allow dirt and dust to accumu-
late on the windows for a long period. Clean the windows with a soft, damp cloth as soon as possible.
• Do not use wax or glass cleaners that contain abrasives when cleaning the windows.
• Do not use any metallic objects to remove condensation build up.
QBrake pads and calipers
Rust may form if the vehicle is parked
with wet brake pads or disc rotors, caus- ing them to stick. Before parking the vehicle after it is washed, drive slowly
and apply the brakes several times to dry the parts.
QBumpers
Do not scrub with abrasive cleaners.
QPlated portions
If dirt cannot be removed, clean the parts as follows:
OUse a soft cloth dampened with an approximately 5% solution of neutral detergent and water to clean the dirt
off.
OWipe the surface with a dry, soft cloth
to remove any remaining moisture.
OTo remove oily deposits, use alcohol
wet wipes or a similar product.
WARNING
QWhen washing the vehicle
Do not apply water to the inside of the
engine compartment. Doing so may cause the electrical components, etc. to catch fire.
QWhen cleaning the windshield
Set the wiper switch to off. If the wiper switch is in “AUTO”, the
wipers may operate unexpectedly in the following situations, and may result in hands being caught or other
serious injuries and cause damage to the wiper blades.

Exhaust gasses cause the exhaust pipes to become quite hot.
When washing the vehicle, be careful not to touch the pipes until they have cooled sufficiently, as touching hot
exhaust pipes can cause burns.

QPrecaution regarding the rear bumper with Blind Spot Monitor
(if equipped)
If the paint of the rear bumper is chipped or scratched, the system may
malfunction. If this occurs, consult any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any
reliable repairer.
NOTICE
QTo prevent paint deterioration and corrosion on the body and
components (aluminum wheels, etc.)
OWash the vehicle immediately in
the following cases:
• After driving near the sea coast
• After driving on salted roads
• If coal tar or tree sap is present on the paint surface
• If dead insects, insect droppings or
bird droppings are present on the paint surface
• After driving in an area contami- nated with soot, oily smoke, mine dust, iron powder or chemical sub-
stances
• If the vehicle becomes heavily soiled with dust or mud
• If liquids such as benzene and gas- oline are spilled on the paint sur-face
OIf the paint is chipped or scratched, have it repaired immediately.
OTo prevent the wheels from corrod-ing, remove any dirt and store in a
place with low humidity when stor- ing the wheels.
QCleaning the exterior lights
OWash carefully. Do not use organic substances or scrub with a hard
brush. This may damage the surfaces of the lights.
ODo not apply wax to the surfaces of the lights.
Wax may cause damage to the lenses.
QWhen using an automatic car wash
Set the wiper switch to off position.
If the wiper switch is in “AUTO”, the wipers may operate and the wiper blades may be damaged.
QWhen using a high pressure car wash
OWhen washing the vehicle, do not let water from the high-pressure washer directly hit the camera (if
equipped) or the area around the camera. Due to the shock from the high pressure water, it is possible
that the device may not operate normally.
ODo not bring the nozzle tip close to boots (rubber or resin manufac-tured cover), or connectors or the
following parts. The parts may be damaged if they come into contact with high-pres-
sure water.
• Traction related parts
• Steering parts
• Suspension parts
• Brake parts
OKeep the cleaning nozzle at least 30 cm (11.9 in.) away from the vehi-cle body. Otherwise resin section,
such as moldings and bumpers, may be deformed and damaged. Also, do not continuously hold the
nozzle in the same place.

Be on the alert for changes in perfor-
mance and sounds, and visual tip-offs
that indicate service is needed. Some
important clues are:
OEngine missing, stumbling or pinging
OAppreciable loss of power
OStrange engine noises
OA fluid leak under the vehicle (How-
ever, water dripping from the air con-
ditioning system after use is normal.)
OChange in exhaust sound (This may
indicate a dangerous carbon monox-
ide leak. Drive with the windows open
and have the exhaust system checked
immediately.)
OFlat-looking tires, excessive tire
squeal when cornering, uneven tire
wear
OVehicle pulls to one side when driven
straight on a level road
OStrange noises related to suspension
movement
OLoss of brake effectiveness, spongy
feeling brake pedal, pedal almost
touches the floor, vehicle pulls to one
side when braking
OEngine coolant temperature continu-
ally higher than normal (P.551)
If you notice any of these clues, take
your vehicle to any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or
any reliable repairer as soon as possi-
ble.

QWhen working on the engine compartment
OMake sure that “IGNITION ON” on the multi-information display and the “READY” indicator are both off.
OKeep hands, clothing and tools away from the moving fan.
OBe careful not to touch the engine, power control unit, radiator, exhaust
manifold, etc. right after driving as they may be hot. Oil and other flu-ids may also be hot.
ODo not leave anything that may burn easily, such as paper and
rags, in the engine compartment.
ODo not smoke, cause sparks or
expose an open flame to fuel. Fuel fumes are flammable.
OTake care because brake fluid can harm your hands or eyes and dam-age painted surfaces. If fluid gets
on your hands or in your eyes, flush the affected area with clean water immediately. If you still experience
discomfort, consult a doctor.
QWhen working near the electric
cooling fan or radiator grille
Be sure the power switch is off. With the power switch in ON, the
electric cooling fan may automatically start to run if the air conditioning is on and/or the coolant temperature is
high. ( P.458)
QSafety glasses
Wear safety glasses to prevent flying or falling material, fluid spray, etc., from getting in your eyes.
NOTICE
QIf you remove the air cleaner fil-ter
Driving with the air cleaner filter removed may cause excessive engine wear due to dirt in the air.
QIf the fluid level is low or high
It is normal for the brake fluid level to
go down slightly as the brake pads wear or when the fluid level in the accumulator is high.
If the reservoir needs frequent refill- ing, it may indicate a serious problem.

A certain amount of engine oil will be
consumed while driving. In the following situations, oil consumption may increase, and engine oil may need to be
refilled in between oil maintenance inter- vals.
OWhen the engine is new, for example directly after purchasing the vehicle or after replacing the engine
OIf low quality oil or oil of an inappropri-ate viscosity is used
OWhen driving at high engine speeds or with a heavy load, when towing, or
when driving while accelerating or decelerating frequently
OWhen leaving the engine idling for a long time, or when driving frequently through heavy traffic

QUsed engine oil
OUsed engine oil contains poten-
tially harmful contaminants which may cause skin disorders such as inflammation and skin cancer, so
care should be taken to avoid pro- longed and repeated contact. To remove used engine oil from your
skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water.
ODispose of used oil and filters only in a safe and acceptable manner. Do not dispose of used oil and fil-
ters in household trash, in sewers or onto the ground. Call any autho-rized Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer, service station or auto parts store for information concern-
ing recycling or disposal.
ODo not leave used engine oil within
the reach of children.

QTo prevent serious engine dam- age
Check the oil level on a regular basis.
QWhen replacing the engine oil
OBe careful not to spill engine oil on the vehicle components.
OAvoid overfilling, or the engine could be damaged.
OCheck the oil level on the dipstick every time you refill the vehicle.
OBe sure the engine oil filler cap is properly tightened.
QIf oil is spilled on the engine cover
To prevent the engine cover from
being damaged, remove any engine oil from the engine cover as soon as possible using a neutral detergent. Do
not use an organic solvent such as brake cleaner.

To turn them off, press the switch once

QEmergency flashers
OIf the emergency flashers are used for a long time while the hybrid system is not operating (while the “READY” indi-
cator is not illuminated), the 12-volt battery may discharge.
OIf any of the SRS airbags deploy (inflate) or in the event of a strong rear impact, the emergency flashers will
turn on automatically. The emergency flashers will turn off automatically after operating for
approximately 20 minutes. To manu- ally turn the emergency flashers off, press the switch twice. (The emer-
gency flashers may not turn on auto- matically depending on the force of the impact and conditions of the colli-
sion.)
1 Steadily step on the brake pedal
with both feet and firmly depress

Do not pump the brake pedal repeat- edly as this will increase the effort required to slow the vehicle.
2 Shift the shift lever to N.
