■If the SRS airbags deploy (inflate)
●Slight abrasions, burns, bruising etc., may be sustained from S RS airbags,
due to the extremely high speed deployment (inflation) by hot g ases.
● A loud noise and white powder will be emitted.
● Parts of the airbag module (steering wheel hub, airbag cover an d inflator) as
well as the front seats, parts of the front and rear pillars, and roof side rails,
may be hot for several minutes. The airbag itself may also be h ot.
● The windshield may crack.
● The hybrid system will be stopped and fuel supply to the engine will be
stopped. ( P. 1 0 0 )
● The emergency flashers will turn on automatically. ( P. 660)
● For Safety Connect subscribers, if any of the following situations occur, the
system is designed to send an emergency call to the response center, noti-
fying them of the vehicle’s location (without needing to push t he “SOS” but-
ton) and an agent will attempt to speak with the occupants to a scertain the
level of emergency and assistance required. If the occupants are unable to
communicate, the agent automatically treats the call as an emer gency and
helps to dispatch the necessary emergency services. ( P. 76)
• An SRS airbag is deployed.
• A seat belt pretensioner is activated.
• The vehicle is involved in a severe rear-end collision.
■ SRS airbag deployment condi tions (SRS front airbags)
● The SRS front airbags will deploy in the event of an impact tha t exceeds the
set threshold level (the level of force corresponding to an app roximately 12 -
18 mph [20 - 30 km/h] frontal collision with a fixed wall that does not move or
deform).
However, this threshold velocity will be considerably higher in the following
situations:
• If the vehicle strikes an object, such as a parked vehicle or sign pole,
which can move or deform on impact
• If the vehicle is involved in an underride collision, such as a collision in
which the front of the vehicle “underrides”, or goes under, the bed of a
truck
● Depending on the type of collision, it is possible that only th e seat belt pre-
tensioners and seat cushion airbag will activate.
● The SRS front airbags for the front passenger will not activate if there is no
passenger sitting in the front passenger seat. However, the SRS front air-
bags for the front passenger may deploy if luggage is put in the seat, even if
the seat is unoccupied.
● The SRS seat cushion airbag on the front passenger seat will not operate if
the occupant is not wearing a seat belt.

5-4. Refueling
5
Driving
Opening the fuel tank cap
●Turn the power switch off and ensure that all the doors and win -
dows are closed.
● Confirm the type of fuel.
■Fuel types
P. 735
■ Fuel tank opening for unleaded gasoline
To help prevent incorrect fueling, your vehicle has a fuel tank opening that
only accommodates the special nozzle on unleaded fuel pumps.
The fuel tank of your vehicle h as a special structure, which
requires a reduction in fuel tank pressure before refueling. After
the opener switch has been pressed, it will take several second s
until the vehicle is r eady for refueling.

5-6. Driving tips
■Tire chain installation
Observe the following precautions when installing and removing chains:
● Install and remove tire chains in a safe location.
● Install tire chains on the front tires only. Do not install tir e chains on the rear
tires.
● Install tire chains on front tires as tightly as possible. Retighten chains after
driving 1/4 - 1/2 mile (0.5 - 1.0 km).
● Install tire chains following the instructions provided with the tire chains.
■ Consumption of fuel and electricity
In cold temperatures, resistance of the parts of a vehicle (transmission, tires,
etc.) generally increases, resulting in increase of energy consumption. As a
result, fuel economy is likely to decrease.
Consumption of fuel and electricity of this vehicle is also likely to become
worse in cold temperatures.
WARNING
■Driving with snow tires
Observe the following precautions to reduce the risk of accidents.
Failure to do so may result in a loss of vehicle control and ca use death or
serious injury.
● Use tires of the specified size.
● Maintain the recommended level of air pressure.
● Do not drive in excess of 75 mph (120 km/h), regardless of the type of
snow tires being used.
● Use snow tires on all, not just some wheels.
■ Driving with tire chains
Observe the following precautions to reduce the risk of accidents.
Failure to do so may result in the vehicle being unable to be d riven safely,
and may cause death or serious injury.
● Do not drive in excess of the speed limit specified for the tir e chains being
used, or 30 mph (50 km/h), whichever is lower.
● Avoid driving on bumpy road surfaces or over potholes.
● Avoid sudden acceleration, abrupt steering, sudden braking and shifting
operations that cause sudden engine braking.
● Slow down sufficiently before entering a curve to ensure that vehicle con-
trol is maintained.
● Do not use LTA (Lane Tracing Assist).
■ When parking the vehicle
When parking the vehicle without applying the parking brake, ma ke sure to
chock the wheels. If you do not chock the wheels, the vehicle m ay move
unexpectedly, possibly resulting in an accident.

5176-1. Using the air conditioning system and defogger
6
Interior features
■When the outside temperature exceeds 75°F (24°C) and the air co ndition-
ing system is on
● In order to reduce the air conditioning power consumption, the air condition-
ing system may switch to recirculated air mode automatically. This may also
reduce fuel consumption.
● Recirculated air mode is selected as a default mode when the power switch
is turned to ON mode.
● It is possible to switch to outside air mode at any time by pre ssing
.
■Ventilation and air conditioning odors
●To let the fresh air in, set the air conditioning system to the outside air mode.
● During use, various odors from inside and outside the vehicle m ay enter into
and accumulate in the air conditioning system. This may then ca use odor to
be emitted from the vents.
● In order to suppress odors that occur when the air conditioning system
starts, fresh air is automatically taken in when parked.
● To reduce potential odors from occurring, the start timing of t he blower may
be delayed for a short period of time immediately after the air conditioning
system is started in automatic mode.

7-1. Maintenance and care
■Caring for leather areas
Toyota recommends cleaning the interior of the vehicle at least twice a year to
maintain the quality of the vehicle’s interior.
■ Shampooing the carpets
There are several commercial foaming-type cleaners available. U se a sponge
or brush to apply the foam. Rub in overlapping circles. Do not use water.
Wipe dirty surfaces and let them dry. Excellent results are obt ained by keep-
ing the carpet as dry as possible.
■ Seat belts
Clean with mild soap and lukewarm water using a cloth or sponge . Also
check the belts periodically for excessive wear, fraying or cut s.
■ Cleaning the air intake vents and filters
●Dust on the air intake vents or filters may interferes cooling of the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery) and results in poor electricity and fue l consumption.
Clean the air intake vents and filters periodically.
● If continuing to drive the vehicle with “Maintenance Required f or Traction
Battery Cooling Parts See Owner’s Manual” shown on the multi-in formation
display, the hybrid battery (traction battery) may overheat, le ading to
decreasing in distance that can be driven using the electric mo tor. It may
cause poor electricity and fuel consumption or a malfunction. If the warning
message is shown, clean the air intake vents and filters immediately.
● Improper handling may result in damage to the grille or filters. If you have
any concerns about cleaning the filters, contact your Toyota dealer.
● If the warning message on the multi-information display does not disappear
after cleaning the filters, have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.
● Timing of cleaning filters differs depending on the use environ ment of the
vehicle.
