8-2. Steps to take in an emergency
If your vehicle needs to be towed
In the following situations, it is not possible to be towed by another
vehicle using cables or chains, as the front wheels may be lock ed due
to the parking lock. Contact your Toyota dealer or commercial towing
service.
● There is a malfunction in t he shift control system. (P. 336, 688)
● There is a malfunction in the immobilizer system. ( P. 83)
● There is a malfunction in the smart key system. (P. 708)
● The 12-volt battery is discharged. ( P. 7 1 2 )
The following may indicate a problem with your hybrid transmiss ion.
Contact your Toyota dealer or commercial towing service before tow-
ing.
● The hybrid system warning message is displayed and the vehicle
does not move.
● The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
If towing is necessary, we recommend having your vehicle
towed by your Toyota dealer o r commercial towing service,
using a wheel-lift type t ruck or flatbed truck.
Use a safety chain system for all towing, and abide by all stat e/
provincial and local laws.

SRS warning lightIndicates a malfunction in:
• The SRS airbag system;
• The front passenger occupant classification system; or
• The seat belt pretensioner system
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately.

PCS warning light
• When a buzzer sounds simultaneously:Indicates a malfunction has occurred in the PCS (Pre-
Collision System).
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately.
• When a buzzer does not sound: The PCS (Pre-Collision System) has become temporar-
ily unavailable, corrective action may be necessary.
 Follow the instructions dis played on the multi-infor-
mation display. ( P. 376, 681)
If the PCS (Pre-Collision System) or VSC (Vehicle Stability
Control) system is disabled, the PCS warning light will illu-
minate.

Indicates a malfunction in the LTA (Lane Tracing Assist)

When trouble arises
Inappropriate pedal operation warning light*6 (warning
buzzer) When a buzzer sounds:
Indicates a malfunction in:
• The Brake Override System
• The Drive-Start Control
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately.
Indicates that the shift position was changed and Drive-
Start Control was operated while depressing the accelera-
tor pedal.
 Momentarily release the accelerator pedal.
Indicates that the Parking Support Brake function (if
equipped) is operating ( P. 457)
 Follow the instruction that is displayed on the multi-
information display.
When a buzzer does not sound:
Indicates that the accelerator and brake pedals are being
depressed simultaneously, and the Brake Override Sys-
tem is operating.
 Release the accelerator pedal and depress the brake
pedal.

Low engine oil pressure warning (symbol display)*6
Indicates that the engine oil pressure is too low
 Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and con-
tact your Toyota dealer.

*1: Brake system warning buzzer:When there is a possible problem that could affect braking perf ormance,
the warning light will come on and a warning buzzer will sound.
*2: Low engine oil pressure warning buzzer: A buzzer also sounds continuously for approximately 30 seconds at maxi-
mum in addition to the low engine oil pressure warning light when the
“READY” indicator is illuminated.
*3: Open door warning buzzer: The open door warning buzzer sounds to alert one or more of the doors is
not fully closed (with the vehicle having reached a speed of 3 mph [5 km/h]).
*4: Driver’s seat belt warning buzzer:
The driver’s seat belt warning buzzer sounds to alert the drive r that his or
her seat belt is not fastened. Once the power switch is turned to ON mode,
the buzzer sounds. If the seat belt is still unfastened, the bu zzer sounds
intermittently for a certain period of time after the vehicle r eaches a certain
speed.
Front passenger’s seat belt warning buzzer:
The front passenger’s seat belt warning buzzer sounds to alert the front
passenger that his or her seat belt is not fastened. If the sea t belt is unfas-
tened, the buzzer sounds intermittently for a certain period of time after the
vehicle reaches a certain speed.
*5: Rear passengers’ seat belt warning buzzer: The rear passengers’ seat belt warning buzzer sounds to alert t he rear
passenger that his or her seat belt is not fastened. If the sea t belt is unfas-
tened, the buzzer sounds intermittently for a certain period of time, after
the seat belt is fastened and unfastened and the vehicle reache s a certain
speed.

The multi-information display shows warnings of system mal-
functions, incorrectly performed operations, and messages that
indicate a need for maintena nce. When a message is shown,
perform the correction procedur e appropriate to the message.

The warning lights and warning buzzers operate as follows depending
on the content of the message. If a message indicates the need for
inspection by a dealer, have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota
dealer immediately.
The operation of the warning lights and warning buzzers may dif fer
from those stated. In this case, perform the correction procedu re
according to the displayed message.
*: A buzzer sounds the first time a message is shown on the multi -informa-

When trouble arises
■Warning messages
The warning messages explained below may differ from the actual messages
according to operation conditions and vehicle specifications.
■ System warning lights
The master warning light does not come on or flash in the following cases.
Instead, a separate system warning light will come on along wit h a message
or image shown on the multi-information display.
● “Antilock Brake System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer”:
The ABS warning light comes on. ( P. 672)
● “Braking Power Low Visit Your Dealer”:
The brake system warning light (yellow) will come on. ( P. 671)
● Indicates that a door is not fully closed while the vehicle is stopped.:
The Open door warning light comes on. ( P. 673)
■ If “Visit Your Dealer” is shown
The system or part shown on the multi-information display is malfunctioning.
Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.
■ If a message about an operation is shown
● If a message about an operation of the accelerator pedal or bra ke pedal is
shown
• A warning message about an operation of the brake pedal may be shown
while the driving assist systems such as PCS (Pre-Collision Sys tem) or
the dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range is opera ting. If a
warning message is shown, be sure to decelerate the vehicle or follow an
instruction shown on the multi-information display.
• A warning message is shown when Brake Override System operates .

• A warning message is shown when Drive-Start Control or Parking Sup-
port Brake function (if equipped) operates ( P. 316, 457). Follow the
instructions on the multi-information display.
● If a message about an operation of the power switch is shown
An instruction for operation of the power switch is shown when the incorrect
procedure for starting the hybrid system is performed or the power switch is
operated incorrectly. Follow the instructions shown on the mult i-information
display to operate the power switch again.
● If a message about a shift operation is shown
To prevent the shift position from being selected incorrectly o r the vehicle
from moving unexpectedly, the shift position may be changed aut omatically
( P. 341) or shift operation may be required. In this case, chang e the shift
position following the instructions on the multi-information display.
● If a message or image about an open/close state of a part or replenishment
of a consumable is shown
Confirm the part indicated by the multi-information display or a warning light,
and then perform the coping method such as closing the open doo r or
replenishing a consumable.

When trouble arises
■If “Shift System Malfunction See Owner’s Manual” is shown
Indicates a malfunction in the shift control system. Immediatel y have the sys-
tem inspected by your Toyota dealer.
The system may not operate properly.
■ If “Low 12-Volt Battery Apply Parking Brake Securely While Park ing See
Owner’s Manual” is shown
Indicates that the 12-volt battery charge is insufficient. Char ge or replace the
12-volt battery.
● When the message is shown, the hybrid system may not start or t he shift
position may not be changed normally. (Coping method: P. 688)
● After charging the 12-volt battery, the message may not go off until the shift
position is changed from P.
■ If “Shifting Unavailable Low 12-Volt Battery See Owner’s Manual ” is
shown
Indicates that the shift position cannot be changed because the voltage of the
12-volt battery drops. Charge or replace the 12-volt battery.
(Coping method in the case the 12-volt battery is discharged: P. 712)
■ If “Hybrid System Overheated. Reduced Output Power.” is shown
The message may be shown when driving under severe operating co nditions.
(For example, when driving up a long steep hill or driving up a steep hill in
reverse.)
Coping method: P. 718
■ If “Maintenance Required for Traction Battery Cooling Parts See Owner’s
Manual” is shown
There is a possibility that the filter may be clogged, the air intake vent may be
blocked or there may be a gap in the duct.
● When the air intake vents or filters are dirty, clean them by the procedures
on P. 580.
● When the air intake vents or filters are not dirty and the warn ing message is
shown, have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer.
■ If “Traction Battery Needs to be Protected Refrain From the Use of
Position” is shown
This message may be displayed when the shift position is in N.
As the hybrid battery (traction battery) can not be charged when the shift
position is in N, shift the shift position to P when the vehicle is stopped.
■ If “Traction Battery Needs to be Protected Shift into to Resta rt” is
shown
This message is displayed when the hybrid battery (traction battery) charge
has become extremely low because the vehicle has been left with the N shift
position selected for a certain amount of time.
When operating the vehicle, shift to P and restart the hybrid s ystem.
