Immobilizer system
The indicator light flashes after
the power switch has been turned
off to indicate that the system is
operating.
The indicator light stops flashing
after the power switch has been
turned to ACCESSORY or ON
mode to indicate that the system
has been canceled.
Q System maintenance
The vehicle has a maintenance-free type immobilizer system.
Q Conditions that may cause the system to malfunction
O If the grip portion of the key is in contact with a metallic object
O If the key is in close proximity to or touching a key registered to the security
system (key with a built-in transponder chip) of another vehicl e
The vehicle’s keys have built-in transponder chips that prevent
the hybrid system from starting if a key has not been previousl y
registered in the vehicle’s on-board computer.
Never leave the keys inside the vehicle when you leave the vehi -
cle.
This system is designed to help prevent vehicle theft but does not
guarantee absolute security against all vehicle thefts.

Do not modify or remove the system. If modified or removed, the proper
operation of the system cannot be guaranteed.

The smart entry & start system, wireless remote control and immobilizer sys-
tem use weak radio waves. In the following situations, the communication
between the electronic key and the vehicle may be affected, preventing the
smart entry & start system, wireless remote control and immobilizer system
from operating properly. (Ways of coping: P. 693)
OWhen the electronic key battery is depleted
ONear a TV tower, electric power plant, gas station, radio station, large dis-
play, airport or other facility that generates strong radio waves or electrical
noise
OWhen the electronic key is in contact with, or is covered by the following
metallic objects
• Cards to which aluminum foil is attached
• Cigarette boxes that have aluminum foil inside
• Metallic wallets or bags
• Coins
• Hand warmers made of metal
• Media such as CDs and DVDs
OWhen other wireless key (that emit radio waves) is being used nearby
OWhen carrying the electronic key together with the following devices that
emit radio waves
• Portable radio, cellular phone, cordless phone or other wireless commu-
nication devices
• Another vehicle’s electronic key or a wireless key that emits radio waves
• Personal computers or personal digital assistants (PDAs)
• Digital audio players
• Portable game systems
OIf window tint with a metallic content or metallic objects are attached to the
rear window
OWhen the electronic key is placed near a battery charger or electronic
devices

QIf the hybrid system does not start

reliable repairer.

OIf a message related to start-up is shown on the multi-information display,
read the message and follow the instructions.
QIf the “READY” indicator does not come on
In the event that the “READY” indicator does not come on even after perform-
ing the proper procedures for starting the vehicle, contact any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer immedi-
ately.

QOperation of the power switch
OIf the switch is not pressed shortly and firmly, the power switch mode may
not change or the hybrid system may not start.
OIf attempting to restart the hybrid system immediately after turning the power
switch off, the hybrid system may not start in some cases. After turning the
power switch off, please wait a few seconds before restarting the hybrid sys-
tem.

QWhen the shift control system malfunctions
When attempting to turn the power switch off while there is a malfunction in
the shift control system, the power switch mode may change to ACCES-
SORY mode. In this case, ACCESSORY mode may be turned off by applying
the parking brake and pressing the power switch again. If there is a malfunc-
tion in the system, have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer immediately.

If your vehicle needs to be towed
In the following situations, it is not possible to be towed by another
vehicle using cables or chains, as the front wheels may be lock ed due
to the parking lock. Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or To y o t a
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer or commercial tow ing ser-
vice.
O There is a malfunction in the shift control system. (P. 326, 672)
O There is a malfunction in the immobilizer system. (P. 74)
O There is a malfunction in the smart entry & start system. (P. 693)
O The 12-volt battery is discharged. (P. 697)
The following may indicate a problem with your hybrid transmiss ion.
Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized rep airer,
or any reliable repairer or commercial towing service before to wing.
O The hybrid system warning message is displayed and the vehicle
does not move.
O The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
If towing is necessary, we recommend having your vehicle
towed by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer or commercial towing service ,
using a wheel-lift type truck or flatbed truck.
Use a safety chain system for all towing, and abide by all stat e/
provincial and local laws.

When trouble arises
If the hybrid system will not star t
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
O The charging cable may be attached to the vehicle. (P. 155)
O The electronic key may not be functioning properly.* (P. 693)
O There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle. ( P. 100)
O There may be a malfunction in the immobilizer system.* (P. 7 4 )
O There may be a malfunction in the shift control system.*

O The hybrid system may be malfunctioning due to an electrical prob-
lem such as electronic key battery depletion or a blown fuse. H ow-
ever, depending on the type of malfunction, an interim measure is
available to start the hybrid system. ( P. 692)
O There is a possibility that the temperature of the hybrid battery
(traction battery) is extremely low (approximately below -30 C
[-22 F]). (P. 100, 325)
*: It may not be possible to shift the shift position other than P.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
O The 12-volt battery may be discharged. (P. 697)
O The 12-volt battery terminal connections may be loose or corroded.
( P. 594)
Reasons for the hybrid system not starting vary depending on
the situation. Check the following and perform the appropriate
procedure:
The hybrid system will not start even though the correct starti ng
procedure is being followed. ( P. 323)
The interior lights and headlights are dim, or the horn does not
sound or sounds at a low volume.
