The outside rear view mirrors can be cleared using the mirror d efoggers. Turn
on the rear window defogger to turn on the outside rear view mi rror defog-
gers. ( P. 527)
Q Using automatic mode in cold weather
When automatic mode is used in cold weather, the door mirror co uld freeze
up and automatic stowing and return may not be possible. In thi s event,
remove any ice and snow from the door mirror, then either opera te the mirror
using manual mode or move the mirror by hand.
Q Customization
The automatic mirror folding and extending operation can be cha nged.

QImportant points while driving
Observe the following precautions while driving.
Failing to do so may result in loss of control of the vehicle a nd cause an

O Do not adjust the mirrors while driving.
O Do not drive with the mirrors folded.
O Both the driver and passenger side mirrors must be extended and properly
adjusted before driving.
Q When a mirror is moving
To avoid personal injury and mirror malfunction, be careful not to get your
hand caught by the moving mirror.
Q When the mirror defoggers are operating
Do not touch the rear view mirror surfaces, as they can become very hot
and burn you.

ODrive carefully when it is raining, because visibility will be reduced, the win-
dows may become fogged-up, and the road will be slippery.
ODrive carefully when it starts to rain, because the road surface will be espe-
cially slippery.
ORefrain from high speeds when driving on an expressway in the rain,
because there may be a layer of water between the tires and the road sur-
face, preventing the steering and brakes from operating properly.
QRestraining the hybrid system output (Brake Override System)
OWhen the accelerator and brake pedals are depressed at the same time, the
hybrid system output may be restrained.

Q“ECO Accelerator Guidance” (P. 229)
It is easier to drive in an Eco-friendly manner by driving while referring to the
“ECO Accelerator Guidance” display. Also, by using the “ECO Accelerator
Guidance”, it is easier to increase the Eco score evaluation.
OWhen starting off:
While staying within the “ECO Accelerator Guidance” range, gradually
depress the accelerator pedal and accelerate to the desired speed. If exces-
sive acceleration is avoided, the “Eco-Start” score will increase.
OWhen driving:
After accelerating to the desired speed, release the accelerator pedal and
drive at a stable speed within the “ECO Accelerator Guidance” range. By
keeping the vehicle within the “ECO Accelerator Guidance” range, the “Eco-
Cruise” score will increase.
OWhen stopping:
When stopping the vehicle, early releasing the accelerator pedal will cause
the “Eco-Stop” score to increase.
QDrive-Start Control (DSC)
When the TRC is turned off (P. 511), sudden start restraint control also
does not operate. If your vehicle have trouble escaping from the mud or fresh
snow due to sudden start restraint control operation, deactivate TRC (P.
511) so that the vehicle may become able to escape from the mud or fresh
snow.

Q When starting the vehicle
Always keep your foot on the brake pedal while stopped with the “READY”
indicator is illuminated. This prevents the vehicle from creepi ng.
Q When driving the vehicle
O Do not drive if you are unfamiliar with the location of the brake and accel-
erator pedals to avoid depressing the wrong pedal.
• Accidentally depressing the accelerator pedal instead of the b rake
pedal will result in sudden acceleration that may lead to an ac cident.
• When backing up, you may twist your body around, leading to a diffi-
culty in operating the pedals. Make sure to operate the pedals properly.
• Make sure to keep a correct driving posture even when moving t he
vehicle only slightly. This allows you to depress the brake and accelera-
tor pedals properly.
• Depress the brake pedal using your right foot. Depressing the brake
pedal using your left foot may delay response in an emergency, result-
ing in an accident.
O The driver should pay extra attention to pedestrians when the vehicle is
powered only by the electric motor (traction motor). As there i s no engine
noise, the pedestrians may misjudge the vehicle’s movement. Eve n
though the vehicle is equipped with the vehicle proximity notif ication sys-
tem, drive with care as pedestrians in the vicinity may still n ot notice the
vehicle if the surrounding area is noisy.
O Do not drive the vehicle over or stop the vehicle near flammable materials
such as leaves, paper or rags.
The exhaust system and exhaust gases can be extremely hot. Thes e hot
parts may cause a fire if there is any flammable material nearb y.
O During normal driving, do not turn off the hybrid system. Turning the hybrid
system off while driving will not cause loss of steering or bra king control,
however, power assist to the steering will be lost. This will m ake it more
difficult to steer smoothly, so you should pull over and stop t he vehicle as
soon as it is safe to do so.

Q When driving the vehicle
O Use engine braking (shift position B instead of shift position D) to maintain
a safe speed when driving down a steep hill.
Using the brakes continuously may cause the brakes to overheat and lose
effectiveness. ( P. 3 3 0 )
O Do not adjust the positions of the steering wheel, the seat, or the inside or
outside rear view mirrors while driving.
Doing so may result in a loss of vehicle control.
O Always check that all passengers’ arms, head or other parts of their body
are not outside the vehicle.
O Do not drive across river crossings or through other bodies of water.
This may cause electric/electronic components to short circuit, damage
the hybrid system or cause other serious damage to the vehicle.
Q When driving on slippery road surfaces
O Sudden braking, acceleration and steering may cause tire slippage and
reduce your ability to control the vehicle.
O Sudden acceleration, engine braking due to shifting, or changes in engine
speed could cause the vehicle to skid, resulting in an accident.
O After driving through a puddle, depress the brake pedal to make sure that
the brakes are functioning properly. Wet brake pads may prevent the
brakes from functioning properly. If the brakes on only one sid e are wet
and not functioning properly, steering control may be affected.

NOTICE
QWhen driving the vehicle
O Do not depress the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time during
driving, as this may restrain the hybrid system output.
O Do not use the accelerator pedal or depress the accelerator and brake
pedals at the same time to hold the vehicle on a hill.
Q When parking the vehicle
Always set the parking brake, and shift the shift position to P . Failure to do
so may cause the vehicle to move or the vehicle may accelerate suddenly if
the accelerator pedal is accidentally depressed.
Q Avoiding damage to vehicle parts
O Do not turn the steering wheel fully in either direction and hold it there for
an extended period of time.
Doing so may damage the power steering motor.
O When driving over bumps in the road, drive as slowly as possible to avoid
damaging the wheels, underside of the vehicle, etc.
Q If you get a flat tire while driving
A flat or damaged tire may cause the following situations. Hold the steering
wheel firmly and gradually depress the brake pedal to slow down the vehi-
cle.
O It may be difficult to control your vehicle.
O The vehicle will make abnormal sounds or vibrations.
O The vehicle will lean abnormally.

Cargo and luggage
Take notice of the following information about storage precau-
tions, cargo capacity and load.

Q Things that must not be carried in the luggage compartment
The following things may cause a fire if loaded in the luggage compartment:
O Receptacles containing gasoline
O Aerosol cans
Q Storage precautions
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may prevent the pedals from being depressed pr operly,
may block the driver’s vision, or may result in items hitting t he driver or pas-
sengers, possibly causing an accident.
O Stow cargo and luggage in the luggage compartment whenever possible.
O Do not stack cargo and luggage in the luggage compartment higher than
the seatbacks.
O When you fold down the rear seats, long items should not be placed
directly behind the front seats.
O Never allow anyone to ride in the luggage compartment. It is not designed
for passengers. They should ride in their seats with their seat belts prop-
erly fastened.
O Do not place cargo or luggage in or on the following locations.
• At the feet of the driver
• On the front passenger or rear seats (when stacking items)
• On the luggage cover
• On the instrument panel
• On the dashboard
O Secure all items in the occupant compartment.
Q Load and distribution
O Do not overload your vehicle.
O Do not apply loads unevenly.
Improper loading may cause deterioration of steering or braking control
which may cause death or serious injury.

Driving
QMeter display
When the power switch is turned off, each display will turn off as follows.
O The shift position indicator will turn off after approximately 2 seconds.
O The multi-information display, clock, etc. will turn off after approximately 30
seconds.
(Each display will also turn off immediately if a door is locke d before 30 sec-
onds has elapsed.)
Q If the smart entry & start system has been deactivated in a customized
setting

WARNING
QWhen starting the hybrid system
Always start the hybrid system while sitting in the driver’s se at. Do not
depress the accelerator pedal while starting the hybrid system under any
circumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident res ulting in death or serious injury.
Q Stopping the hybrid system in an emergency
O If you want to stop the hybrid system in an emergency while driving the
vehicle, press and hold the power switch for more than 2 second s, or
press it briefly 3 times or more in succession. ( P. 647)
However, do not touch the power switch while driving except in an emer-
gency. Turning the hybrid system off while driving will not cau se loss of
steering or braking control, however, power assist to the steer ing will be
lost. This will make it more difficult to steer smoothly, so yo u should pull
over and stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.
O If the power switch is operated while the vehicle is running, a warning
message will be shown on the multi-information display and a bu zzer
sounds.
O When restarting the hybrid system after an emergency shutdown while
driving, press the power switch. When restarting the hybrid sys tem after
stopping the vehicle, change the shift position to P and then p ress the
power switch.

WARNING
QLimitations of the pre-collision system
O The driver is solely responsible for safe driving. Always drive safely, taking
care to observe your surroundings.
Do not use the pre-collision system instead of normal braking o perations
under any circumstances. This system will not prevent collision s or lessen
collision damage or injury in every situation. Do not overly re ly on this sys-
tem. Failure to do so may lead to an accident, resulting in dea th or serious
injury.
O Although this system is designed to help avoid a collision or help reduce
the impact of the collision, its effectiveness may change accor ding to vari-
ous conditions, therefore the system may not always be able to achieve
the same level of performance.
Read the following conditions carefully. Do not overly rely on this system
and always drive carefully.
• Conditions under which the system may operate even if there is no pos-
sibility of a collision: P. 374
• Conditions under which the system may not operate properly: P. 3 7 6
O Do not attempt to test the operation of the pre-collision system yourself.
Depending on the objects used for testing (dummies, cardboard o bjects
imitating detectable objects, etc.), the system may not operate properly,
possibly leading to an accident.
Q Pre-collision braking
O When the pre-collision braking function is operating, a large amount of
braking force will be applied.
O If the vehicle is stopped by the operation of the pre-collision braking func-
tion, the pre-collision braki ng function operation will be canceled after
approximately 2 seconds. Depress the brake pedal as necessary.
O The pre-collision braking function may not operate if certain operations are
performed by the driver. If the accelerator pedal is being depr essed
strongly or the steering wheel is being turned, the system may determine
that the driver is taking evasive action and possibly prevent t he pre-colli-
sion braking function from operating.
O In some situations, while the pre-collision braking function is operating,
operation of the function may be canceled if the accelerator pe dal is
depressed strongly or the steering wheel is turned and the syst em deter-
mines that the driver is taking evasive action.
O If the brake pedal is being depressed, the system may determine that the
driver is taking evasive action and possibly delay the operatio n timing of
the pre-collision braking function.
