Working from top to bottom, lib-
erally apply water to the vehicle
body, wheel wells and underside
of the vehicle to remove any dirt
and dust.
 Wash the vehicle body using a
sponge or soft cloth, such as a
chamois.
 For hard-to-remove marks, use
car wash soap and rinse thor-
oughly with water.
 Wipe away any water.
 Wax the vehicle when the water-
proof coating deteriorates.
If water does not bead on a clean sur-
face, apply wax when the vehicle body
is cool.
■Automatic car washes
●Before washing the vehicle:
• Fold the mirrors.
• Turn off the power back door system. (if equipped)
Start washing from the front of the vehi-
cle. Extend the mirrors before driving.
●Brushes used in automatic car washes may scratch the vehicle sur-
face, parts (wheel, etc.) and harm
your vehicle’s paint.
●In certain automati c car washes, the
rear spoiler may interfere with
machine operation. This may prevent
the vehicle from being cleaned prop- erly or result in damage to the rear
spoiler.
■High pressure car washes
As water may enter the cabin, do not bring the nozzle tip near the gaps
around the doors or perimeter of the
windows, or spray these areas continu- ously.
■When using a car wash (vehicles
with a smart entry & start system)
If the door handle becomes wet while the electronic key is within the effective
range, the door may lock and unlock
repeatedly. In that case, follow the fol- lowing correction procedures to wash
the vehicle:
●Place the key in a position 2 m (6 ft.)
or more separate from the vehicle
while the vehicle is being washed. (Take care to ensure that the key is
not stolen.)
●Set the electronic key to battery-sav-
ing mode to disable the smart entry &
start system. ( P.137)
■Wheels and wheel ornaments
●Remove any dirt immediately by using
a neutral detergent.
●Wash detergent off with water immedi-
ately after use.
●To protect the paint from damage,
make sure to observe the following precautions.
• Do not use acidic, alkaline or abrasive
detergent • Do not use hard brushes
• Do not use detergent on the wheels
when they are hot, such as after driv-
ing or parking in hot weather
■Brake pads and calipers
Rust may form if the vehicle is parked
with wet brake pads or disc rotors, caus-
ing them to stick. Before parking the vehicle after it is washed, drive slowly
and apply the brakes several times to
dry the parts.

appropriate to each compo-
nent and its material.

Check the radiator, condenser and
intercooler and clear away any for-
eign objects. If either of the above
parts is extremely dirty or you are
not sure of their condition, have
your vehicle inspected by any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer.
Check the battery as follows.
■Battery exterior
Make sure that the battery termi-
nals are not corroded and that there
are no loose connections, cracks,
or loose clamps.

■Before recharging
When recharging, the battery produces hydrogen gas which is flammable and
explosive. Therefore, observe the fol-
lowing precautions before recharging:
●If recharging with the battery installed
on the vehicle, be sure to disconnect the ground cable.
●Make sure the charger is off when connecting and disconnecting the
charger cables to the battery.
■After recharging/reconnecting the
battery (vehicles with a smart entry & start system)
●Unlocking the doors using the smart entry & start system may not be possi-
ble immediately after reconnecting the
battery. If this happens, use the wire- less remote control or the mechanical
key to lock/unlock the doors.
●Start the engine with the engine
switch in ACC. The engine may not

■When the engine is hot
Do not remove the engine coolant
reservoir cap and the intercooler cool- ant reservoir cap.
The cooling system may be under
pressure and may spray hot coolant if the cap is removed, causing serious
injuries, such as burns.
NOTICE
■When adding coolant
Coolant is neither plain water nor
straight antifreeze. The correct mix-
ture of water and antifreeze must be used to provide proper lubrication,
corrosion protection and cooling. Be
sure to read the antifreeze or coolant label.
■If you spill coolant
Be sure to wash it off with water to
prevent it from damaging parts or
paint.

or intercooler as they may be hot and
cause serious injuries, such as burns.

■If air flow from the vents decreases dramatically
The filter may be clogged. Check the fil-
ter and replace if necessary.
■If the key battery is depleted
The following symptoms may occur:
●The smart entry & start system (if equipped) and wireless remote control
will not function properly.
●The operational range will be reduced.

■Use a CR2032 lithium battery
●Batteries can be purchased at any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer, local electrical appliance
shops or camera stores.
●Replace only with the same or equiva-
lent type recommended by the manu- facturer.
●Dispose of used batteries according to local laws.
NOTICE
■When using the air conditioning system
Make sure that a filter is always
installed. Using the air conditioning system
without a filter may cause damage to
the system.
■To prevent damage to the filter
cover
When moving the filter cover in the
direction of arrow to release the fit-
ting, pay attention not to apply exces- sive force to the cl aws. Otherwise, the
claws may be damaged.

1 Remove the key cover.
To prevent damage to the key, cover the tip of the flathead screwdriver with a
rag.
2 Remove the battery cover.
If the battery cover is difficult to remove,
lift the edge to remove it.
3 Remove the depleted battery
using a small flathead screw-
driver.
Insert a new battery with the “+” termi-
nal facing up.
4 Install the battery cover with the
tab facing up.
Push the entire edge of the battery
cover into the key.
5 Install the key cover.
Align the key cover with the key and
then press it straight into the key.
Make sure that the key cover is securely installed without any gaps
between it and the key.
6 Operate the or switch
and check that the doors can be
locked/unlocked.

1 Release the lock and remove
the mechanical key.
2 Remove the key cover.
To prevent damage to the key, cover
the tip of the flathead screwdriver with a rag.
3 Remove the depleted battery
using a small flathead screw-
driver.
When removing the cover, the elec- tronic key module may stick to the
cover and the battery may not be visi-
ble. In this case, remove the electronic key module in order to remove the bat-
tery.
Insert a new battery with the “+” termi-
nal facing up.
4 When installing the key cover
and mechanical key, install by
conducting step 2 and step 1
with the directions reversed.
5 Operate the or switch
and check that the doors can be
locked/unlocked.

■Battery precautions
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
●Do not swallow the battery. Doing
so may cause chemical burns.
●A coin battery or button battery is
used in the wireless remote con- trol/electronic key. If a battery is
swallowed, it ma y cause severe
chemical burns in as little as 2 hours and may result in death or
serious injury.
●Keep away new and removed bat-
teries from children.
●If the cover cannot be firmly closed,
stop using the wireless remote con-
trol/electronic key and stow the key in the place where children cannot
reach, and then contact any author-
ized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable

If your vehicle needs to
be towed
If towing is necessary, we rec-
ommend having your vehicle
towed by any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reli-
able repairer or commercial
towing service, using a
wheel-lift type truck or flatbed
truck.
Use a safety chain system for
all towing, and abide by all
state/provincial and local laws.

Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
■When towing the vehicle
Be sure to transport the vehicle with
the front wheels raised or with all four wheels raised off the ground. If the
vehicle is towed with the front wheels
contacting the ground, the drivetrain and related parts may be damaged.
■While towing
●When towing using cables or
chains, avoid sudden starts, etc.
which place excessive stress on the towing eyelets, cables or chains.
The towing eyelets, cables or
chains may become damaged, bro- ken debris may hit people, and
cause serious damage.
●Do not turn the engine switch off.
There is a possibility that the steer-
ing wheel is locked and cannot be operated.
■Installing towing eyelets to the vehicle
Make sure that towing eyelets are
installed securely. If not securely installed, towing eye-
lets may come loose during towing.
NOTICE
■To prevent damage to the vehicle
when towing using a wheel-lift type truck
●Vehicles without a smart entry &
start system: Do not tow the vehicle from the rear when the engine
switch is off or the key is removed.
The steering lock mechanism is not strong enough to hold the front
wheels straight.
●Vehicles with a smart entry & start
system: Do not tow the vehicle from
the rear when the engine switch is off. The steering lock mechanism is
not strong enough to hold the front
wheels straight.
●When raising the vehicle, ensure
adequate ground clearance for tow- ing at the opposite end of the raised
vehicle. Without adequate clear-
ance, the vehicle could be dam- aged while being towed.
