Maintenance and care
■Coolant selection
Only use “Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” or a similar high qua lity ethylene
glycol based non-silicate, non-am ine, non-nitrite, and non-borate coolant with
long-life hybrid organic acid technology.
“Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” is a mixture of 50% coolant an d 50% deion-
ized water. (Minimum temperature: -35 C [-31F])
For more details about coolant, contact any authorized Toyota r etailer or
Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
■ If the coolant level drops within a short time of replenishing
Visually check the radiator, hoses, engine/power control unit c oolant reservoir
caps, drain cock and water pump.
If you cannot find a leak, have any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota autho-
rized repairer, or any reliable repairer test the cap and check for leaks in the
cooling system.
WARNING
■ When the hybrid system is hot
Do not remove the engine/power control unit coolant reservoir c aps.
The cooling system may be under pressure and may spray hot cool ant if the
cap is removed, causing serious injuries, such as burns.
NOTICE
■ When adding coolant
Coolant is neither plain water nor straight antifreeze. The correct mixture of
water and antifreeze must be used to provide proper lubrication , corrosion
protection and cooling. Be sure to read the antifreeze or coola nt label.
■ If you spill coolant
Be sure to wash it off with water to prevent it from damaging p arts or paint.

If you think something is wrong
●Fluid leaks under the vehicle
(Water dripping from the air conditioning after use is normal.)
● Flat-looking tires or uneven tire wear
● Engine coolant temperature gauge needle continually points higher
than normal
● Changes in exhaust sound
● Excessive tire squeal when cornering
● Strange noises related to the suspension system
● Pinging or other noises related to the hybrid system
● Engine misses, stumbling or running roughly
● Appreciable loss of power
● Vehicle pulls heavily to one side when braking
● Vehicle pulls heavily to one side when driving on a level road
● Loss of brake effectiveness, spongy feeling, pedal almost touches
the floor
If you notice any of the following symptoms, your vehicle proba -
bly needs adjustment or repair. Contact any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repaire r as
soon as possible.

Tire pressure warning light
When the light comes on:
Low tire inflation pressure such as
• Natural causes ( P. 689)
• Flat tire ( P. 699, 729)
Adjust the tire inflation pressure to the specified
level.
The light will turn off after a few minutes. In case the
light does not turn off even if the tire inflation pres-
sure is adjusted, have the system checked by any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.
When the light comes on after blinking for 1 minute:
Malfunction in the tire pressure warning system ( P. 689)
Have the system checked by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer.

When trouble arises
■If a message that indicates the need for referring to Owner’s Manual is
displayed
● If “Engine Coolant Temperature High.”is shown, follow the instructions
(P. 757).
● If the following messages are shown, there may be a malfunction. Immedi-
ately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact any authoriz ed Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repaire r. Continuing to
drive the vehicle may be dangerous.
• “Braking Power Low.”
• “Charging System Malfunction.”
• “Engine Oil Pressure Low.”
● If the following messages are shown, there may be a malfunction. Immedi-
ately have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota retai ler or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
• “Hybrid System Malfunction.”
• “Check Engine.”
• “Hybrid Battery System Malfunction.”
• “Accelerator system Malfunction.”
• “Entry & Start System Malfunction.”
• “Exhaust filter full.” (P. 531)
• “Hybrid System Stopped”
• “Engine Stopped”
● If the “Low 12-Volt Battery.” is shown,
• When the display goes off after several seconds (displays for about 6
seconds):
Maintain the hybrid system operation for more than 15 minutes a nd
charge the 12-volt battery.
• When the display does not go off:
Start up the hybrid system using the procedures: P. 749
● If “Maintenance required for Traction battery cooling parts. See owner’s
manual.” is shown, the filters may be clogged, the air intake v ents may be
blocked, or there may be a gap i n the duct. Therefore, perform the following
correction procedure.
• If the air intake vents and filters of the hybrid battery (tra ction battery) are
dirty, perform the procedure on P. 640 to clean them.
• If the warning message is shown when the air intake vents and filters of
the hybrid battery (traction battery) are not dirty, have the v ehicle
inspected by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorize d repairer,
or any reliable repairer immediately.

When trouble arises
If your vehicle overheats
●The needle of the engine coolant temperature gauge (P. 1 6 6 )
enters the red zone or a loss of hybrid system power is experi-
enced. (For example, the vehicle speed does not increase.)
● “Hybrid System Overheated Reduced Output Power.” is shown on
the multi-information display.
● Steam comes out from under the hood.
■If the high coolant temperature warning light comes on
Stop the vehicle in a safe place and turn off the air condition ing
system, and then stop the hybrid system.
If you see steam:
Carefully lift the hood after the steam subsides.
If you do not see steam:
Carefully lift the hood.
After the hybrid system has cooled down sufficiently, inspect t he
hoses and radiator core (radiator) for any leaks.
