1. Separate the transmitter with a flat, thinobject, such as a flat head screwdriver.
.Carefully insert the tool into the
notch located along the parting line
of the transmitter. Do not insert the
tool too far. Stop as soon as
resistance is felt.
.Twist the tool until the transmitter is
separated.
2. Remove the old battery. Do not use a metal object.
3. Insert the new battery, positive side facing down. Replace with a CR2032 or
equivalent battery.
4. Set transmitter button side down on a hard surface and press the other half
straight down to force the halves
together.
Remote Vehicle Start
This vehicle may have a remote start
feature. This feature allows you to start the
engine from outside the vehicle. It may also
start the vehicle's heating or air conditioning
systems. See Climate Control Systems 0114.
Laws in some local communities may restrict
the use of remote starters. For example,
some laws may require a person using remote start to have the vehicle in view
when doing so. Check local regulations for
any requirements on remote starting of
vehicles.
Do not use the remote start feature if the
vehicle is low on fuel. The vehicle may run
out of fuel.
The RKE transmitter range may be less while
the vehicle is running.

of the transmitter, see
Remote Keyless Entry
(RKE) System 08.
/:This button will be on the RKE
transmitter if the vehicle has remote start.
To start the engine using the remote start
feature:
1. Aim the RKE transmitter at the vehicle.
2. Press and release
Qon the transmitter.
3. Immediately press and hold
/until the
turn signal lamps flash. If you cannot see
the lamps, press and hold
/for at least
four seconds.
When the engine starts, the parking
lamps will turn on and remain on while
the engine is running. The doors will be
locked. The engine will continue to run for
10 minutes. After 30 seconds, repeat the
steps if a 10-minute extension is desired.
Remote start can be extended only once.
After entering the vehicle during a remote
start, turn the ignition on to drive the
vehicle.
A maximum of two remote starts or a start
with an extension are allowed between
ignition cycles.
If the remote start procedure is used again
before the first 10-minute time frame has
ended, the first 10 minutes will immediately
expire and the second 10-minute time frame
will start.
After the engine has been remote started
two times, or a remote start with an
extension, the ignition must be turned on
and then off before the remote start
procedure can be used again.
To cancel a remote start do any of the
following:.Aim the RKE transmitter at the vehicle
and press
/until the parking lamps
turn off.
.Turn on the hazard warning flashers.
.Turn the ignition on and then off.

The remote vehicle start feature will not
operate if:
.The key is in the ignition.
.The hood is open.
.The hazard warning flashers are on.
.There is an emission control system
malfunction. SeeMalfunction Indicator
Lamp (Check Engine Light) 077.
.The engine coolant temperature is
too high.
.The oil pressure is low.
.Two remote starts or a start with an
extension have already been provided.
.The vehicle is not in P (Park).

Door Locks
{Warning
.Passengers, especially children, can
easily open the doors and fall out of a
moving vehicle. When a door is locked,
the handle will not open it. The
chance of being thrown out of the
vehicle in a crash is increased if the
doors are not locked. So, all

passengers should wear seat belts
properly and the doors should be
locked whenever the vehicle is driven.
.Young children who get into unlocked
vehicles may be unable to get out.
A child can be overcome by extreme
heat and can suffer permanent injuries
or even death from heat stroke.
Always lock the vehicle whenever
leaving it.
.Outsiders can easily enter through an
unlocked door when you slow down
or stop the vehicle. Locking the doors
can help prevent this from happening.
To lock the door from the inside, slide the
manual lever on the door down. To unlock
the door, slide the manual lever up.
From the outside, use the key.

Power Door Locks
If equipped, pressTto lock or unlock the
doors.
When a door is locked, the inside door
handle will not work.

Charging System Light
The charging system light comes on briefly
when the ignition is turned on, but the
engine is not running, as a check to show
the light is working. It should go out when
the engine is started.
If the light stays on, or comes on while
driving, there may be a problem with the
electrical charging system. Have it checked
by your dealer. Driving while this light is on
could drain the battery.
When this light comes on, or is flashing, the
Driver Information Center (DIC) also displays
a message.
If a short distance must be driven with the
light on, be sure to turn off all accessories,
such as the radio and air conditioner. Find a
safe place to stop the vehicle.
Malfunction Indicator Lamp
(Check Engine Light)
This light is part of the vehicle’s emission
control on-board diagnostic system. If this
light is on while the engine is running, a
malfunction has been detected and the
vehicle may require service. The light should
come on to show that it is working when
the ignition is on and the engine is not
running. SeeIgnition Positions 0130.
Malfunctions are often indicated by the
system before any problem is noticeable.
Being aware of the light and seeking service
promptly when it comes on may prevent
damage.
Caution
If the vehicle is driven continually with
this light on, the emission control system
may not work as well, the fuel economy
may be lower, and the vehicle may not

run smoothly. This could lead to costly
repairs that might not be covered by the
vehicle warranty.
Caution
Modifications to the engine, transmission,
exhaust, intake, or fuel system, or the
use of replacement tires that do not
meet the original tire specifications, can
cause this light to come on. This could
lead to costly repairs not covered by the
vehicle warranty. This could also affect
the vehicle’s ability to pass an Emissions
Inspection/Maintenance test. See
Accessories and Modifications 0173.
If the light is flashing : A malfunction has
been detected that could damage the
emission control system and increase vehicle
emissions. Diagnosis and service may be
required.
To help prevent damage, reduce vehicle
speed and avoid hard accelerations and
uphill grades. If towing a trailer, reduce the
amount of cargo being hauled as soon as
possible.

Vehicle Ahead Indicator
If equipped, this indicator will display green
when a vehicle is detected ahead and amber
when you are following a vehicle ahead
much too closely.
See Forward Collision Alert (FCA) System

StabiliTrak OFF Light
This light comes on briefly when the vehicle
is turned on to show that the light is
working. If it does not come on then, have
it fixed so it will be ready to warn you if
there is a problem. This light comes on when the StabiliTrak/
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system is
turned off. If StabiliTrak/ESC is off, the
Traction Control System (TCS) is also off. To
turn ESC off and on, see
Traction Control/
Electronic Stability Control 0142.
If ESC and TCS are off, the systems do not
assist in controlling the vehicle. Adjust
driving accordingly.
Traction Control System (TCS)/
StabiliTrak Light
This light comes on briefly when the vehicle
is turned on to show that the light is
working. If it does not come on then, have
it fixed so it will be ready to warn you if
there is a problem.
If the light is on and not flashing, the TCS
and potentially the StabiliTrak/ESC system
are not fully operational and may not assist
in maintaining control. Adjust driving
accordingly. If the condition persists, see your dealer as soon as possible. A Driver
Information Center (DIC) message may
display.
The light flashes when the TCS and/or the
StabiliTrak/ESC system is actively working.

Tire Pressure Light
For vehicles with the Tire Pressure Monitor
System (TPMS), this light comes on briefly
when the vehicle is started. It provides
information about tire pressures and
the TPMS.
When the Light Is On Steady
This indicates that one or more of the tires
are significantly underinflated.
A Driver Information Center (DIC) tire
pressure message may also display. Stop as
soon as possible, and inflate the tires to the

T:Press this button to display the oil
life, rear park assist, units, tire pressure
readings for vehicles with the Tire Pressure
Monitor System (TPMS), engine hours, Tire
Pressure Monitor System (TPMS)
programming for vehicles with the TPMS
and without a Remote Keyless Entry (RKE)
transmitter, and compass zone and compass
calibration on vehicles with this feature.
U: Press this button to customize the
feature settings on the vehicle. See Vehicle
Personalization 086 for more information.
V:Press this button to set or reset certain
functions and to turn off or acknowledge
messages on the DIC.
Trip/Fuel Menu Items
3: Press this button to scroll through
the following menu items:
Odometer
Press
3until XX km (mi) displays. This
display shows the distance the vehicle has
been driven in either kilometers (km) or
miles (mi). Trip Odometers
Press
3until A or B displays. This
display shows the current distance traveled
in either kilometers (km) or miles (mi) since
the last reset for each trip odometer. Both
trip odometers can be used at the
same time.
Each trip odometer can be reset to zero
separately by pressing
Vwhile the desired
trip odometer is displayed.
The trip odometer has a feature called the
retro-active reset. This can be used to set
the trip odometer to the number of
kilometers (miles) driven since the ignition
was last turned on. This can be used if the
trip odometer is not reset at the beginning
of the trip.
To use the retro-active reset feature, press
and hold
Vfor at least four seconds. The
trip odometer will display the number of
kilometers (km) or miles (mi) driven since
the ignition was last turned on and the
vehicle was moving. Once the vehicle begins
moving, the trip odometer will accumulate
mileage. For example, if the vehicle was
driven 8 km (5 miles) before it is started
again, and then the retro-active reset feature
is activated, the display will show 8 km (5 miles). As the vehicle begins moving, the
display will then increase to 8.1 km
(5.1 miles), 8.2 km (5.2 miles), etc.
If the retro-active reset feature is activated
after the vehicle is started, but before it
begins moving, the display will show the
number of kilometers (km) or miles (mi) that
were driven during the last ignition cycle.
Fuel Range
Press
3until FUEL RANGE displays. This
display shows the approximate number of
remaining kilometers (km) or miles (mi) the
vehicle can be driven without refueling.
The fuel range estimate is based on an
average of the fuel economy over recent
driving history and the amount of fuel
remaining in the fuel tank. This estimate
will change if driving conditions change. For
example, if driving in traffic and making
frequent stops, this display may read one
number, but if the vehicle is driven on a
freeway, the number may change even
though the same amount of fuel is in the
fuel tank. This is because different driving
conditions produce different fuel economies.
Generally, freeway driving produces better
fuel economy than city driving.

If the vehicle is low on fuel, the FUEL LEVEL
LOW message will be displayed.
Average Economy
Press
3until AVG ECONOMY displays.
This display shows the approximate average
liters per 100 kilometers (L/100 km) or miles
per gallon (mpg). This number is calculated
based on the number of L/100 km (mpg)
recorded since the last time this menu item
was reset. To reset AVG ECONOMY, press
and hold
V. The display will return to zero.
Fuel Used
Press
3until FUEL USED displays. This
display shows the number of liters (L) or
gallons (gal) of fuel used since the last reset
of this menu item. To reset the fuel used
information, press and hold
Vwhile FUEL
USED is displayed.
Timer
Press
3until TIMER displays. This
display can be used as a timer.
To start the timer, press
Vwhile TIMER is
displayed. The display will show the amount
of time that has passed since the timer was
last reset, not including time the ignition is
off. Time will continue to be counted as long as the ignition is on, even if another
display is being shown on the DIC. The
timer will record up to 99 hours, 59 minutes
and 59 seconds (99:59:59) after which the
display will return to zero.
To stop the timer, press
Vbriefly while
TIMER is displayed.
To reset the timer to zero, press and hold
V
while TIMER is displayed.
Average Speed
Press
3until AVERAGE SPEED displays.
This display shows the average speed of the
vehicle in kilometers per hour (km/h) or
miles per hour (mph). This average is
calculated based on the various vehicle
speeds recorded since the last reset of this
value. To reset the value, press and hold
V.
The display will return to zero.
Digital Tachometer
Press
3until Tachometer ##00 RPM
displays. This display shows the engine
speed in revolutions per minute (RPM).
Blank Display
This display shows no information.
Vehicle Information Menu Items
T: Press this button to scroll through the
following menu items:
Oil Life
Press
Tuntil OIL LIFE REMAINING displays.
This display shows an estimate of the oil's
remaining useful life. If you see 99% OIL LIFE
REMAINING on the display, that means 99%
of the current oil life remains. The engine oil
life system will alert you to change the oil
on a schedule consistent with your driving
conditions.
When the remaining oil life is low, the
CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message will
appear on the display. You should change
the oil as soon as possible. See Engine Oil
0 179. In addition to the engine oil life
system monitoring the oil life, additional
maintenance is recommended. See
Maintenance Schedule 0245.
Remember, you must reset the OIL LIFE
yourself after each oil change. It will not
reset itself. Also, be careful not to reset the
OIL LIFE accidentally at any time other than
when the oil has just been changed.
It cannot be reset accurately until the next
oil change. To reset the engine oil life
system, see Engine Oil Life System 0181.

Driving Information
Driving for Better Fuel Economy
Driving habits can affect fuel mileage. Here
are some driving tips to get the best fuel
economy possible:
.Set the climate controls to the desired
temperature after the engine is started,
or turn them off when not required.
.Avoid fast starts and accelerate smoothly.
.Brake gradually and avoid abrupt stops.
.Avoid idling the engine for long periods
of time.
.When road and weather conditions are
appropriate, use cruise control.
.Always follow posted speed limits or
drive more slowly when conditions
require.
.Keep vehicle tires properly inflated.
.Combine several trips into a single trip.
.Replace the vehicle's tires with the same
TPC Spec number molded into the tire's
sidewall near the size.
.Follow recommended scheduled
maintenance.
Distracted Driving
Distraction comes in many forms and can
take your focus from the task of driving.
Exercise good judgment and do not let other
activities divert your attention away from
the road. Many local governments have
enacted laws regarding driver distraction.
Become familiar with the local laws in
your area.
To avoid distracted driving, keep your eyes
on the road, keep your hands on the
steering wheel, and focus your attention on
driving.
.Do not use a phone in demanding driving
situations. Use a hands-free method to
place or receive necessary phone calls.
.Watch the road. Do not read, take notes,
or look up information on phones or
other electronic devices.
.Designate a front seat passenger to
handle potential distractions.
.Become familiar with vehicle features
before driving, such as programming
favorite radio stations and adjusting
climate control and seat settings. Program
all trip information into any navigation
device prior to driving.
.Wait until the vehicle is parked to
retrieve items that have fallen to the
floor.
.Stop or park the vehicle to tend to
children.
.Keep pets in an appropriate carrier or
restraint.
.Avoid stressful conversations while
driving, whether with a passenger or on a
cell phone.
{Warning
Taking your eyes off the road too long or
too often could cause a crash resulting in
injury or death. Focus your attention on
driving.
Refer to the infotainment section for more
information on using that system and the
navigation system, if equipped, including
pairing and using a cell phone.
Defensive Driving
Defensive driving means “always expect the
unexpected.” The first step in driving
defensively is to wear the seat belt. See
Seat Belts 028.

Hydraulic Power Steering
This vehicle has hydraulic power steering.
It may require maintenance. SeePower
Steering Fluid 0188.
If power steering assist is lost because the
engine stops or because of a system
malfunction, the vehicle can be steered but
may require increased effort. See your
dealer if there is a problem.
Caution
If the steering wheel is turned until it
reaches the end of its travel, and is held
in that position for more than 15 seconds,
damage may occur to the power steering
system and there may be loss of power
steering assist.
Curve Tips
.Take curves at a reasonable speed.
.Reduce speed before entering a curve.
.Maintain a reasonable steady speed
through the curve.
.Wait until the vehicle is out of the curve
before accelerating gently into the
straightaway.
Steering in Emergencies
.There are some situations when steering
around a problem may be more effective
than braking.
.Holding both sides of the steering wheel
allows you to turn 180 degrees without
removing a hand.
.Antilock Brake System (ABS) allows
steering while braking.
Off-Road Recovery
The vehicle's right wheels can drop off the
edge of a road onto the shoulder while
driving. Follow these tips: 1. Ease off the accelerator and then,
if there is nothing in the way, steer the
vehicle so that it straddles the edge of
the pavement.
2. Turn the steering wheel about one-eighth of a turn, until the right front
tire contacts the pavement edge.
3. Turn the steering wheel to go straight down the roadway.
Loss of Control
Skidding
There are three types of skids that
correspond to the vehicle's three control
systems:
.Braking Skid —wheels are not rolling.
.Steering or Cornering Skid —too much
speed or steering in a curve causes tires
to slip and lose cornering force.
.Acceleration Skid —too much throttle
causes the driving wheels to spin.
Defensive drivers avoid most skids by taking
reasonable care suited to existing conditions,
and by not overdriving those conditions. But
skids are always possible.
If the vehicle starts to slide, follow these
suggestions:
