Drive-E ‒ purer driving pleasure
Volvo is committed to the well-being of its customers. As a natural part of this commit-ment, we care about the environment inwhich we all live. Concern for the environ-ment means an everyday involvement inreducing our environmental impact.
Volvo's environmental activities are based on a holistic view, which means we consider theoverall environmental impact of a productthroughout its complete life cycle. In this con-text, design, production, product use, andrecycling are all important considerations. Inproduction, Volvo has partly or completelyphased out several chemicals including CFCs,lead chromates, asbestos, and cadmium; andreduced the number of chemicals used in ourplants 50% since 1991. Volvo was the first in the world to introduce into production a three-way catalytic converterwith a Lambda sond, now called the heatedoxygen sensor, in 1976. The current version ofthis highly efficient system reduces emissionsof harmful substances (CO, HC, NOx) from theexhaust pipe by approximately 95 - 99% andthe search to eliminate the remaining emis-sions continues. Volvo is the only automobilemanufacturer to offer CFC-free retrofit kits forthe air conditioning system of all models as farback as the 1975 model 240. Advanced elec-tronic engine controls and cleaner fuels arebringing us closer to our goal. In addition to continuous environmental refinement of con-ventional gasoline-powered internal combus-tion engines, Volvo is actively looking atadvanced technology alternative-fuel vehicles. When you drive a Volvo, you become our part- ner in the work to lessen the vehicle's impacton the environment. To reduce your vehicle'senvironmental impact, you can:
Maintain proper air pressure in your tires.Tests have shown decreased fuel econ-omy with improperly inflated tires.
Follow the recommended maintenanceschedule in your Warranty and ServiceRecords Information booklet.
Drive at a constant speed whenever possi-ble.
See a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician as soon as possible for inspec-tion if the check engine (malfunction indi-cator) light illuminates, or stays on afterthe vehicle has started.
Properly dispose of any vehicle-relatedwaste such as used motor oil, used batter-ies, brake pads, etc.
When cleaning your vehicle, please usegenuine Volvo car care products. All Volvocar care products are formulated to beenvironmentally friendly.

Connected Safety 10
Connected Safety communicates information between your vehicle and other vehicles via the Internet 11
. The function is designed to
notify the driver of any hazardous road condi- tions ahead.
The function can notify the driver if another vehicle further down the road has activated itshazard warning flashers or detected slipperyroad conditions. You will also be notified ifyour own vehicle detects slippery road condi-tions. Connected Safety can assist the driver with the following:
Hazard warning flashers alert
Slippery road alerts
Connected Safety communication betweenvehicles only works for vehicles that are equip-ped with the function and have it activated.
Hazard warning flashers alertIf your vehicle's hazard warning flashers areactivated, information on this can be sent toother vehicles approaching your location. When your vehicleapproaches a vehicle with itshazard warning flashers on,this symbol will appear in theinstrument panel.
In vehicles equipped with a head-up display, the warning symbols for Connected Safetywill also be displayed there.
Slippery road alertsIf your own car detects reduced frictionbetween your tires and the road, informationon this can be sent to vehicles approachingyour own car's position.
As the vehicle approachesthe area affected, this symbolwill be displayed in the instru-ment panel to alert the driverof slippery road conditions.Drivers of other vehiclesreceiving information via
Connected Safety will receive similar notifica-tions as they approach the area.
In vehicles equipped with a head-up display, the warning symbols for Connected Safetywill also be displayed there.
WARNING
The function is supplementary driver support intended to facilitate drivingand help make it safer – it cannot han-dle all situations in all traffic, weatherand road conditions.
The driver is advised to read all sec-tions in the Owner's Manual about thisfunction to learn of its limitations, which the driver must be aware ofbefore using the function.
Driver support functions are not a sub-stitute for the driver's attention andjudgment. The driver is always respon-sible for ensuring the vehicle is drivenin a safe manner, at the appropriatespeed, with an appropriate distance toother vehicles, and in accordance withcurrent traffic rules and regulations.

Activating or deactivating Connected Safety
For Connected Safety to be able to share information about road conditions with otherdrivers, the function must be activated. If youdo not wish to share information, the functioncan be deactivated.
Activate or deactivate the function using this button inthe center display's Functionview.
Illuminated button indicator light – the function is activated.
Extinguished button indicator light – thefunction is deactivated.
At activation, the driver must accept the spe-cial terms and conditions shown in the display before an Internet connection 12
can be estab-
lished. The driver must, for example, accept that data is sent from the vehicle using thedriver's cellular phone. Even when your vehicle is not connected to the Internet, you will still be notified if the sys-tem in your own vehicle detects slippery roadconditions. For Connected Safety to functionat full capacity, your vehicle needs to be con-nected to the Internet.

Information on vehicles with activated hazard warning flashers or which have detected slip-pery road conditions is not always communi-cated between all vehicles in the affectedarea.
This may be the case if: No or insufficient Internet connection.
The maneuvers (steering wheel move- ments, acceleration or braking) made bythe vehicles on slippery surfaces are tooweak for friction between the tires androad to be detected.
Vehicles that have detected slippery roadconditions or activated hazard warningflashers have not activated the function.
Vehicles that have detected slippery roadconditions or activated hazard warningflashers are not equipped with the func-tion.
Insufficient GPS/satellite navigation mayprevent warnings.
Slippery road conditions were detected orhazard warning flashers were activated ona road that is not registered in the VolvoCars database.

Park Assist limitations Park Assist (PAS104
) may not be able to
detect all conditions in all situations and func- tionality may therefore be limited in certaincases.
The driver should be aware of the following limitations for Park Assist:
WARNING
The parking sensors have dead/blind spots where objects cannot bedetected.
Pay particular attention to people andanimals near the vehicle.
Bear in mind that the front end of thevehicle may swing out towards oncom-ing traffic during the parking maneuver.
WARNING
Be extra cautious when reversing if this symbol isshown when a trailer, bikecarrier or similar isattached and electricallyconnected to the vehicle. The symbol indicates that
the rear parking assist sensors are deacti-
vated and will not warn of any obstacles.
CAUTION
Objects such as chains, thin and glossy poles or low obstacles may end up in the"signal shadow" and then go temporarilyundetected by the sensors – the pulsatingtone may then unexpectedly stop insteadof becoming a constant tone as expected. The sensors cannot detect high objects, such as protruding ramps. In such situations, pay extra attention and maneuver/drive the vehicle veryslowly or stop the current parkingmaneuver – there may be a high risk ofdamage to the vehicle or other objectssince information from the sensors isnot always reliable in such situations.
CAUTION
In some circumstances, the Park Assist System may produce false warnings due toexternal sound sources with the sameultrasonic frequencies as those the systemworks with. Examples of such sources are horns, wet tires on asphalt, pneumatic brakes, exhaustnoise from motorcycles, etc.
NOTE
When a trailer hitch is configured with the vehicle electrical system, the trailer hitchprotrusion is included when the functionmeasures the distance to objects behindthe vehicle.

The parking sequence is cancelledA parking sequence will be cancelled if: the driver moves the steering wheel
the vehicle's speed exceeds 7 km/h (4 mph)
the driver taps
Cancel in the center dis-
play
when the anti-lock brakes or the Elec- tronic stability control are engaged - e.g.when a wheel loses grip on a slippery road
when speed-dependent power steeringwheel resistance is working at reducedpower – e.g. during cooling due to over-heating
when, while parking, the parking sensorsdetect a vehicle or pedestrian in the vehi-cle's intended direction of travel behind orin front of the vehicle, the auto-brake func-tion will bring the vehicle to a standstill.
A message in the center display will explainwhy the parking sequence was cancelled.
CAUTION
Under certain circumstances, the function may not be able to find parking spaces –one reason may be that the sensors aredisrupted by external sound sources thatemit the same ultrasonic frequencies thatthe system works with. Examples of such sources include horns, wet tires on asphalt, pneumatic brakes, exhaust noise from motorcycles, etc.
NOTE
Dirt, ice and snow covering the sensors reduce their function and can make meas-urement impossible.
Driver responsibilityThe driver should keep in mind that the func- tion is a parking aid ‒
not an infallible fully
automatic system. The driver must always beprepared to take control and cancel a parkingsequence if necessary. There are a number of things to keep in mindwhen parking, including:
The driver is always responsible for deter-mining if the space suggested by the func-tion is suitable for parking.
Do not use the function when using snowchains or a temporary spare tire.
Do not use the function if there are anyobjects protruding from the vehicle.
Heavy rain or snowfall may inhibit PAP'sability to accurately measure a parkingspace.
While searching and measuring the park-ing space, the function may be unable todetect objects located far into the space.
PAP may not suggest parking spaces onnarrow streets if it does not detect suffi-cient space for maneuvering the vehicle.
Use approved tires 122
inflated to the cor-
rect tire pressure because this affects thefunction's ability to provide parking assis-tance.
The function is based on the way the vehi-cles are parked behind and in front of yourparking space. If they are, for example, parked too close to the curb, there is a riskthat your vehicle's tires or wheel rims
122
"Approved tires" refers to tires of the same type and make as the vehicle's original, factory-installed tires.
STARTING AND DRIVING

Economical driving
A more economical driving style can help lower fuel consumption.
Before driving
If possible, precondition the vehicle before driving.
If preconditioning is not possible when itis cold outside, use seat and steeringwheel heating first. Avoid heating theentire passenger compartment to reducethe amount of current being taken fromthe start battery.
Avoid using idling to warm up the vehiclebefore driving.
The type of tires and inflation pressureused could affect energy consumption –consult an authorized Volvo retailer foradvice on suitable tires.
Remove unnecessary items from the vehi-cle - the heavier the load, the higher thefuel consumption.
While driving
Activate Eco drive mode.
Use gear selector position
D as often as
possible.
When using manual gear shifting, drive using the highest possible gear. Use the gear indicator 14
.
Maintain a steady speed and a generous following distance to traffic ahead to mini-mize braking. Use engine braking if possi-ble.
Higher speeds increase energy consump-tion because air resistance increases withspeed.
In a cold climate, reduce heating of thewindshield/rear window, mirrors, seatsand the steering wheel.
Avoid driving with the windows open.
Do not use the accelerator pedal to keepthe vehicle stationary on an uphill gradi-ent. Instead, activate the auto-hold brakefunction at a standstill.
Use trip data to see current fuel consump-tion.
WARNING
Never turn off the engine while the vehicle is moving, e.g. when driving downhill. Thisdeactivates certain important systemssuch as power steering and brakes.
After driving
If possible, park in a climate-controlled garage.

Preparing for a long trip
It is important to have the vehicle's systems and equipment checked carefully before driv-ing long distances.
Check that
the engine is running properly and that fuel consumption is normal
there are no leaks (fuel, oil or other fluid)
the brake pedal is functioning properly
all lights work
tire tread depth and air pressure are atcorrect levels. Change to snow tires whendriving in areas where there is a risk ofsnowy or icy roads
the start battery is sufficiently charged
the wiper blades are in good condition

Winter driving
It is important to check the vehicle before driving in cold/snowy conditions to makesure it can be driven safely.
Before the cold season arrives: Make sure the engine coolant contains 50% antifreeze. This mixture helps pro-tect the engine from frost erosion down toapprox. –35 °C (–31 °F). Do not mix dif-ferent types of antifreeze as this couldpose a health risk.
Keep the fuel tank well filled to preventcondensation from forming.
Check the viscosity of the engine oil. Oilwith low viscosity (thinner oil) improvescold-weather starting and reduces fuelconsumption when driving with a coldengine.
Check the condition and charge level ofthe start battery. Cold weather placesgreater demands on the start battery andreduces its capacity.
Use washer fluid containing antifreeze tohelp prevent ice from forming in thewasher fluid reservoir.
See separate section for engine oil recommen-dations.
Slippery driving conditionsTo help optimize traction and roadholding,Volvo recommends using snow tires on allwheels whenever there is a risk of snow or iceon the road.
NOTE
Certain countries require use of winter tires by law. Not all countries permit the use ofstudded tires.
Practice driving on slippery surfaces under controlled conditions to learn how the vehiclereacts.
