Surroundings
Low objects
Hanging objects, such as flags for overhang- ing loads or accessories such as auxiliarylights or front protective grids that extendbeyond the height of the hood, may limit City Safety functionality.
Slippery road conditions
The extended braking distance on slippery roads may reduce City Safety's capacity tohelp avoid a collision. In these types of situa-tions, the Anti-lock Braking System and Elec- tronic Stability Control (ESC 82
) are designed
for optimal braking power with maintained stability.
Backlighting
The visual warning signal in the windshield may be difficult to detect in bright sunlight, ifthere are reflections, or if the driver is wearingsunglasses or not looking straight ahead.
Heat
If the temperature in the passenger compart- ment is high due to e.g. bright sunlight, thevisual warning signal in the windshield may betemporarily disabled.
Camera and radar sensor's field of vision
The camera's field of vision is limited and in certain situations, it may be unable to detectpedestrians, large animals, cyclists or vehicles,or it may detect them later than expected. Vehicles that are dirty may be detected later than clean vehicles, and in dark conditions,motorcycles may be detected late or not at all. If a text message displayed in the instrument panel indicates that the camera or radar sen-sor is obstructed, it may be difficult for CitySafety to detect pedestrians, large animals,cyclists, vehicles or lane markings in front ofthe vehicle. City Safety functionality maytherefore be reduced. Text messages may not be displayed for all sit- uations in which the windshield sensors areblocked. The driver must therefore alwayskeep the windshield in front of the camera/radar sensor clean.
CAUTION
Only a workshop may perform mainte- nance on driver support components – anauthorized Volvo workshop is recom-mended.
Driver intervention
Backing up
City Safety is temporarily deactivated when the vehicle is backing up.
Low speed
City Safety is not activated at very low speeds under 4 km/h (3 mph). The system will there-fore not intervene in situations in which yourvehicle is approaching another vehicle veryslowly, such as when parking.
Active driver
Action by the driver always has priority. City Safety will therefore not react or will react at alater stage with a warning or intervention insituations in which the driver is clearly steeringand operating the accelerator pedal, even if acollision is unavoidable. An active and aware driving style may there- fore delay collision warnings and interventionin order to minimize unnecessary warnings.

Steering assistance during collision risks limitations
The function may have limited functionality in certain situations and not intervene, e.g.:
for smaller vehicles such as motorcycles
if more than half of your vehicle has moved into the adjacent lane
on roads/lanes with indistinct or no sidelane markings
outside the speed range 60-140 km/h(37-87 mph)
when speed-dependent power steeringwheel resistance is working at reducedpower – e.g. during cooling due to over-heating.
Functionality may also be reduced in other sit-uations, such as: road work
winter driving conditions
narrow roads
poor road surfaces
a very sporty driving style
bad weather with reduced visibility.
In these demanding driving conditions, the function may not be able to properly assist thedriver. In these situations, it is recommendedthat it is turned off.
NOTE
The function uses the vehicle's camera and radar sensor, which has certain generallimitations.

A message in the center display will explainwhy the parking sequence was cancelled.
CAUTION
Under certain circumstances, the function may not be able to find parking spaces –one reason may be that the sensors aredisrupted by external sound sources thatemit the same ultrasonic frequencies thatthe system works with. Examples of such sources include horns, wet tires on asphalt, pneumatic brakes,exhaust noise from motorcycles, etc.
NOTE
Dirt, ice and snow covering the sensors reduce their function and can make meas-urement impossible.
Driver responsibilityThe driver should keep in mind that the func- tion is a parking aid ‒
not an infallible fully
automatic system. The driver must always beprepared to take control and cancel a parkingsequence if necessary. There are a number of things to keep in mindwhen parking, including:
The driver is always responsible for deter-mining if the space suggested by the func-tion is suitable for parking.
Do not use the function when using snowchains or a temporary spare tire.
Do not use the function if there are anyobjects protruding from the vehicle.
Heavy rain or snowfall may inhibit PAP'sability to accurately measure a parkingspace.
While searching and measuring the park-ing space, the function may be unable todetect objects located far into the space.
PAP may not suggest parking spaces onnarrow streets if it does not detect suffi-cient space for maneuvering the vehicle.

Brake functions
The vehicle's brakes are used to reduce speed or prevent the vehicle from rolling.
In addition to the wheel brakes and parking brakes, the vehicle is also equipped with anumber of automatic brake assist functions.These systems provide assistance by e.g. thedriver not needing to depress the brake pedalat a traffic light or when starting up a hill. Depending on how the vehicle is equipped, the following brake assist functions may beincluded:

Brakes
The brake pedal is used to apply the vehicle's regular brakes, which are part of the brakesystem.
The vehicle is equipped with two brake cir- cuits. If one brake circuit is damaged, thebrake pedal may go down further whendepressed. More pressure will then berequired from the driver for normal brakingeffect. The driver's pressure on the brake pedal is enhanced by a power braking function.
WARNING
Power braking only functions if the engine is running.
If the brake pedal is used when the engine is turned off, the pedal will feel stiffer than usualand greater pressure must be applied to brakethe vehicle. In very hilly areas or when driving with a heavy load, manual gear shifting can be used to aug-ment the brakes with engine braking. Enginebraking is most effective if the same gear isused both uphill and downhill.
Anti-lock brakesThe vehicle is equipped with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS 2
), which helps prevent
the wheels from locking and helps maintain steering control when braking. Vibrations maybe felt from the brake pedal when ABS isoperating, which is normal. After the vehicle is started, a brief test of the ABS system is automatically performed whenthe driver releases the brake pedal. An addi-tional automatic test of the system may beperformed when the vehicle is traveling at alow speed. During the test, the brake pedalmay feel as though it is pulsating.

Transmission
The transmission is part of the vehicle's drive- line (power transmission) between the engineand the drive wheels. The function of thetransmission is to change gears dependingon speed and power needs.
The vehicle has an 8-speed automatic trans- mission. The number of gears allows theengine's torque and power band to be effec-tively utilized. Two of the gears are overdrive gears that save fuel when driving at a constant engine speed.Both the gear selector and the steering wheelpaddles can be used to shift up or down man-ually. The selected gear selector position willbe displayed in the instrument panel.

Automatic transmission symbols and messages If a problem occurs with the transmission, a symbol and a message are displayed in theinstrument panel.
CAUTION
Check the operating temperature of the transmission to help avoid damage to anyof the drive system components. If there isa risk of overheating, a warning symbol willappear in the instrument panel and a textmessage will be displayed. Follow the rec-ommendations given.

All Wheel Drive (AWD)

All-wheel drive (AWD 9
), also called four-
wheel drive, means that power is distributed to all four wheels, which improves traction.
To achieve the best traction, power is auto- matically directed to the wheels that have thebest grip. The system continuously calculatesthe need for torque to the rear wheels, andcan immediately redistribute up to half of theengine's torque to the rear wheels. All-wheel drive also has a stabilizing effect at higher speeds. In normal driving conditions,most of the engine's power is directed to thefront wheels. When the vehicle is stationary,all-wheel drive is always activated in prepara-tion for maximum traction during acceleration. All-wheel drive reacts differently depending on which drive mode is selected.

Changing drive mode *
Select the drive mode that is adapted to the current driving conditions. The drive mode is changed using the control in the tunnel console.
Keep in mind that not all drive modes are available in all situations. To change drive mode:
1. Press the DRIVE MODE control.
> A pop-up menu will appear in the cen- ter display.
2. Roll the wheel upward or downward to the desired drive mode. 3. Press the drive mode control or tap its
button in the center display to confirm the selection.

Economical driving
A more economical driving style can help lower fuel consumption.
Before driving
If possible, precondition the vehicle before driving.
If preconditioning is not possible when itis cold outside, use seat and steeringwheel heating first. Avoid heating theentire passenger compartment to reducethe amount of current being taken fromthe start battery.
Avoid using idling to warm up the vehiclebefore driving.
The type of tires and inflation pressureused could affect energy consumption –consult an authorized Volvo retailer foradvice on suitable tires.
Remove unnecessary items from the vehi-cle - the heavier the load, the higher thefuel consumption.
While driving
Activate Eco drive mode.

When using manual gear shifting, drive using the highest possible gear. Use the gear indicator 14
.
Maintain a steady speed and a generous following distance to traffic ahead to mini-mize braking. Use engine braking if possi-ble.
Higher speeds increase energy consump-tion because air resistance increases withspeed.
In a cold climate, reduce heating of thewindshield/rear window, mirrors, seatsand the steering wheel.
Avoid driving with the windows open.
Do not use the accelerator pedal to keepthe vehicle stationary on an uphill gradi-ent. Instead, activate the auto-hold brakefunction at a standstill.
Use trip data to see current fuel consump-tion.
WARNING
Never turn off the engine while the vehicle is moving, e.g. when driving downhill. Thisdeactivates certain important systemssuch as power steering and brakes.
After driving
If possible, park in a climate-controlled garage.
