Trailer weights
WARNING
Please adhere to the recommendations provided for trailer weight. If the recom-mendations are not followed, the vehicleand trailer may be difficult to control duringevasive maneuvers and braking.
NOTE
The specified maximum trailer weights are those permitted by Volvo. National vehicleregulations may set additional restrictionson trailer weight and speed. The trailerhitches may be certified for higher towingweights than the vehicle is permitted totow.
Self-leveling suspension *The vehicle's self-leveling system attempts to keep the vehicle at a constant level, regardlessof load (up to the maximum permitted weight).When the vehicle is stationary, the rear end of the vehicle will be slightly lowered, which isnormal.
Driving in hilly terrain or hot weatherIn certain conditions, there is a risk of over-heating when driving with a trailer. If overheat-ing of the engine and drive system is detected,a warning symbol will illuminate in the instru-ment panel and a message will appear. The automatic transmission adapts the gear for the current load and engine speed.
Steep inclines
Do not lock the automatic transmission into a higher gear than what the engine can handle
‒
it is not always preferable to drive in highgears at low rpm.
Parking on a hill
1. Depress the brake pedal.
2. Apply the parking brake.
3. Put the gear selector in P.

Trailer Stability Assist *
Trailer Stability Assist (TSA 18
) is part of the
ESC 19
stability system and is a function
designed to help stabilize a vehicle that is towing a trailer when the vehicle and trailerhave begun to sway. The function is addedwhen installing a towbar. Contact a Volvoretailer for more information.
Reasons for swayingA vehicle towing a trailer may begin to sway for various reasons. Normally this only occursat high speeds. However, if the trailer is over-loaded or unevenly distributed, e.g. too farback, there is a risk of swaying even at lowspeeds. Swaying may be caused by factors such as:
The vehicle and trailer are hit by a sudden, strong crosswind.
The vehicle and trailer are traveling on anuneven road or over a bump.
Sudden movements of the steering wheel.
Once swaying has begun, it can be difficult orimpossible to stop it. This makes the vehicleand trailer difficult to control and there is a riskof swerving into oncoming traffic or driving offthe road.
Trailer Stability Assist functionTrailer Stability Assist continuously monitorsthe vehicle's movements, particularly lateralmovements. If swaying is detected, the brakesare applied individually on the front wheels,which has a stabilizing effect on the vehicleand trailer. This is often enough to enable thedriver to regain control of the vehicle. If the Trailer Stability Assist function's first attempt is not adequate to stop the swayingmotion, the brakes are applied on all wheelsand engine power is temporarily reduced. Asthe swaying motion begins to decrease andthe vehicle and trailer have once againbecome stable, TSA stops regulating thebrakes/engine power and the driver regainscontrol of the vehicle.
NOTE
Trailer Stability Assist is deactivated if the driver activates ESC Sport Mode in the
center display's menu system.
Trailer Stability Assist may not intervene if the driver tries to compensate for the swayingmotion by moving the steering wheel rapidly,because the system will then not be able todetermine if it is the trailer or the driver caus-ing the swaying. When Trailer Stability Assistis activated, the ESC symbolis displayed in the instrumentpanel.
NOTE
A vehicle software update is required when a towbar is retrofitted. Contact a Volvoretailer.

Towing using a towline
This section refers to one vehicle being towed behind another using a towline.
Before towing another vehicle, check applica- ble speed limit regulations.
Preparations and towing
CAUTION
For some transmission variants, it is not possible to shift from P position if theengine is switched off. Contact an author-ized Volvo workshop for assistance towingor call a professional towing service.
CAUTION
Note that the vehicle must always be towed with the wheels rolling forward.
Do not tow a vehicle with automatictransmission at a speed greater than80 km/h (50 mph) or for a distancegreater than 80 km (50 miles).
WARNING
Ignition mode
II must be active – all
airbags are deactivated in ignition mode I.
Always have the remote key in thevehicle when it is towed.
WARNING
The brake and steering servos do not work when the engine is off – it takesabout 5 times more pressure on the brakepedal and steering requires much moreeffort than normal.
1. Turn on the hazard warning flashers.
2. Attach the towline to the towing eyelet.
3. Put the vehicle in ignition mode II – with-
out pressing the brake pedal, turn the start knob clockwise and hold it there for about4 seconds. Release the knob, which willautomatically return to its original position.
4. Move the gear selector to neutral (N) and release the parking brake. If the battery charge level is too low, it may not be possible to release the parkingbrake. Connect an auxiliary battery to thevehicle if the battery is discharged.
> The towing vehicle can now start driv-ing. 5. Keep the towline taut when the towing
vehicle slows down by applying light pres- sure to the brake pedal. This will helpavoid jarring movements.
6. Be prepared to apply the brakes to stop the vehicle.
Jump startingDo not tow the vehicle to start the engine. Usean auxiliary battery if the start battery's chargelevel is so low that the engine cannot bestarted.
CAUTION
Attempting to tow with the engine running could result in damage to the three-waycatalytic converter.

The compass is automatically activated when the vehicle is started. To deactivate/activate the compass manually:
–Use a paper clip or similar object to press the button on the bottom of the mirror.
> If the compass is deactivated when the vehicle is switched off, it will not be activated the next time the vehicle isstarted. The compass will then need tobe activated manually.

The globe is divided into 15 magnetic zones. The compass 29
should be calibrated if the
vehicle is driven from one zone to another.
1. Stop the vehicle in a large, open area away from steel constructions and high-voltage power lines.
2. Start the engine and switch off all electri- cal equipment (climate system, wipers,etc.) and make sure all doors are closed.
NOTE
Calibration may fail or not even be initiated if electrical equipment is not turned off.
3. Hold the button on the bottom of the rear-view mirror pressed for about 3 seconds (using e.g. a paper clip). The number of thecurrent magnetic zone is shown.

Playing media via the USB port
External audio sources, such as an iPod ® or
MP3 player, can be connected to the audio system via the vehicle's USB port.
Devices with rechargeable batteries can be charged when they are connected via the USBport and the ignition is in mode I, II or the
engine is running. The content on the external source can be read faster if it only contains data of a compat-ible format. Video files can also be played viathe USB port. Some MP3 players have their own file system that the vehicle has support for.

Snow tires
Snow tires are designed for winter driving conditions.
Volvo recommends snow tires with specific dimensions. The tire dimensions vary depend-ing on engine type. When driving with snowtires, the correct type of tires must be moun-ted on all four wheels.
Tips for changing snow tiresWhen switching between regular tires andsnow tires, mark the tires according to whichside they were mounted on, e.g. L for left and
R for right.
Contact a Volvo retailer for assistance deter-mining the most suitable rims and tires.
Studded tiresStudded tires should be broken in by driving500–1000 km (300–600 miles) slowly andgently to help the studs settle properly in thetires. This gives the tire, and especially thestuds, a longer service life.
NOTE
Legal requirements concerning the use of studded tires may vary. Always follow locallaws and regulations.
Tread depthRoad conditions with ice, slush and low tem- peratures place considerably higher demands on tires than summer conditions. Volvo there-fore recommends not driving on snow tiresthat have a tread depth of less than 4 mm(0.15 inch).

Tire sealing system17
The temporary tire sealing system can be used to seal a puncture in a tire or to checkand adjust the pressure in the tire. Models equipped with a spare wheel 18
do not
have the tire sealing system.

The tire sealing system consists of a compres- sor and a bottle containing sealing compound.The sealing functions as a temporary repair.
NOTE
The sealing compound effectively seals tires with punctures in the tread but maynot be able to fully seal tires with punctu-res in the sidewall. Do not use the tire seal-ing system on tires with large tears, cracksor similar damage.
NOTE
The compressor is intended for temporary tire sealing and is approved by Volvo.
LocationThe tire sealing system is located in a foam block under the cargo compartment floor.
Sealing compound expiration dateThe sealing compound bottle must be replaced if its expiration date has passed (seethe decal on the bottle). Handle the old bottleas hazardous waste.

WARNING
Do not remove the bottle or the hose while the tire sealing system is being used.
1. Preparations Turn on the vehicle's hazard warning flashers if the tire sealing system is to beused in an area with traffic. If the puncture was caused by a nail or similar object, do not remove it. It will helpseal the hole. 2. Peel off the speed limit sticker from the
side of the compressor. Affix the decal to aclearly visible location on the windshieldto remind the driver not to exceed thisspeed limit. Do not drive faster than80 km/h (50 mph) while using a tire thathas been temporarily repaired with the tiresealing system.
3. Make sure the switch is in the 0 (Off)
position and take out the electric cableand the hose.
4. Unscrew the orange cover on the com- pressor and unscrew the cap on the seal-ing compound bottle.
5. Screw the bottle onto the bottle holder as far as possible. The bottle and the bottle holder are equip- ped with catches to help prevent the seal-ing compound from leaking. Once the bot-tle is screwed into place into the bottleholder, it cannot be unscrewed. The bottle can only be removed by a workshop 20
.
WARNING
Do not unscrew the bottle. It is equipped with a catch to prevent leakage. 6. Unscrew the tire's valve cap and screw
the hose's valve connector as far as possi- ble onto the valve. Be sure the air release valve on the com- pressor's hose is completely closed.
7. Begin tire sealing procedure Connect the electrical cable to the nearest 12 V outlet and start the vehicle.
NOTE
Make sure that none of the vehicle's other 12 V sockets are used while the compres-sor is running.
WARNING
Never leave children unattended in the vehicle while the engine is running.
WARNING
Inhaling exhaust fumes could lead to seri- ous injury. Never leave the engine runningin an enclosed space or a space withoutsufficient ventilation.
