Maintenance requirements
General maintenance should be performed on a daily basis. This can
be done by yourself or by a Toyota dealer.
Scheduled maintenance should be performed at specified intervals
according to the maintenance schedule.
For details about maintenance items and schedules, refer to the “Sched-
uled Maintenance Guide” or “Owner’s Manual Supplement”.
You can perform som e maintenance procedures by yourself.
Please be aware that do-it-yourse lf maintenance may affect warranty
coverage.
The use of Toyota Repair Manuals is recommended.
For details about warranty coverage, see the separate “Owner’s Warranty
Information Booklet” or “Owner’s Manual Supplement”.
■ Repair and replacement
It is recommended that genuine Toyota parts be used for repairs to ensure
performance of each system. If non-Toyota parts are used in rep lacement or if
a repair shop other than a Toyota dealer performs repairs, conf irm the war-
ranty coverage.
To ensure safe and economical driving, day-to-day care and reg-
ular maintenance are essential. I t is the owner’s responsibility to
perform regular checks. Toyota recommends the following main-
tenance:

WARNING
Please note that the TPMS (tire pressure warning system) is not a sub-
stitute for proper tire maintena nce, and it is the driver’s responsibility to
maintain correct tire pressure, even if under-inflation has not reached
the level to trigger illumination of the TPMS low tire pressure telltale (tire
pressure warning light).
Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS (tire pressure warn-
ing system) malfunction indicato r to indicate when the system is not
operating properly. The TPMS (tire pressure warning system) mal func-
tion indicator is combined with the low tire pressure telltale (tire pressure
warning light). When the system detects a malfunction, the tell tale will
flash for approximately one mi nute and then remain continuously illumi-
nated. This sequence will continue upon subsequent vehicle star t-ups
as long as the malfunction exists . When the malfunction indicator is illu-
minated, the system may not be able to detect or signal low tir e pres-
sure as intended.
TPMS (tire pressure warning system) malfunctions may occur for a vari-
ety of reasons, including the installation of replacement or al ternate tires
or wheels on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS (tire pressure w arning
system) from functioning properly. Always check the TPMS (tire pres-
sure warning system) malfunction telltale after replacing one or more
tires or wheels on your vehicle to ensure that the replacement or alter-
nate tires and wheels allow the TPMS (tire pressure warning sys tem) to
continue to function properly.

• Press the “ON-OFF” button once to deacti-
vate the system, and then press the button
again to reactivate the system.
• A buzzer also sounds.
Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota
dealer immediately.
Indicates a malfunction in the Brake Override
System.
A buzzer also sounds.

When trouble arises
■When recharging or replacing the battery
●Vehicles with a smart key system: In some cases, it may not be possible to
unlock the doors using the smart key system when the battery is dis-
charged. Use the wireless remote control or the mechanical key to lock or
unlock the doors.
● The engine may not start on the first attempt after the battery has recharged
but will start normally after the second attempt. This is not a malfunction.
● Vehicles with a smart key system: The engine switch mode is mem orized by
the vehicle. When the battery is reconnected, the system will r eturn to the
mode it was in before the battery was discharged. Before discon necting the
battery, turn the engine switch off.
If you are unsure what mode the engine switch was in before the battery dis-
charged, be especially careful when reconnecting the battery.
WARNING
■ Avoiding battery fires or explosions
Observe the following precautions to prevent accidentally ignit ing the flam-
mable gas that may be emitted from the battery:
● Make sure each jumper cable is connected to the correct terminal and that
it is not unintentionally in contact with any other than the in tended terminal.
● Do not allow the + and - clamps of the jumper cables to come into contact
with each other.
● Do not smoke, use matches, cigarette lighters or allow open fla me near
the battery.
■ Battery precautions
The battery contains poisonous and corrosive acidic electrolyte , while
related parts contain lead and lead compounds. Observe the foll owing pre-
cautions when handling the battery:
● When working with the battery, always wear safety glasses and t ake care
not to allow any battery fluids (acid) to come into contact wit h skin, clothing
or the vehicle body.
● Do not lean over the battery.
● In the event that battery fluid comes into contact with the skin or eyes,
immediately wash the affected area with water and seek medical attention.
Place a wet sponge or cloth over the affected area until medica l attention
can be received.
● Always wash your hands after handling the battery support, term inals, and
other battery-related parts.
● Do not allow children near the battery.

■Traction AA, A, B, C
The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B and C,
and they represent the tire’s ability to stop on wet pavement a s
measured under controlled conditions on specified government te st
surfaces of asphalt and concrete.
A tire marked C may have p oor traction performance.
Warning: The traction grade assigned to this tire is based on b raking
(straight ahead) traction tests and does not include cornering (turn-
ing) traction.
■Temperature A, B, C
The temperature grades are A ( the highest), B, and C, representing
the tire’s resistance to the ge neration of heat and its ability to dissi-
pate heat when tested under contr olled conditions on a specified
indoor laboratory test wheel.
Sustained high temperature can c ause the material of the tire to
degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead
to sudden tire failure.
Grade C corresponds to a level of performance which all passeng er
car tires must meet under the Fe deral Motor Vehicle Safety Stan-
dard No. 109.
Grades B and A represent higher levels of performance on the labo-
ratory test wheel than the minimum required by law.
Warning: The temperature grades of a tire assume that it is pro perly
inflated and not overloaded.
Excessive speed, underinflation, or excessive loading, either sepa-
rately or in combination, can c ause heat buildup and possible t ire
failure.

SRS.

● Le conducteur et tous les passagers à bord du véhicule doivent porter leur
ceinture de sécurité correctement.
Les coussins gonflables SRS sont des dispositifs de protection complé-
mentaires aux ceintures de sécurité.
● Le coussin gonflable SRS conducteur se déploie avec une puissance con-
sidérable et peut occasionner des blessures graves, voire morte lles, nota-
mment lorsque le conducteur se trouve très près du coussin gonf lable.
Conseils de la National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA):
Sachant que la zone de danger pour le coussin gonflable conduct eur se
trouve dans les premiers 2 - 3 in. (50 - 75 mm) du déploiement, placez-
vous à 10 in. (250 mm) du coussin gonflable conducteur pour gar antir une
marge de sécurité suffisante. Cette distance est à mesurer entre le
moyeu du volant de direction et le sternum. Si vous êtes assis à moins de
10 in. (250 mm), vous pouvez changer votre position de conduite de plu-
sieurs façons:
• Reculez votre siège le plus possible, tout en continuant à pou voir
atteindre confortablement les pédales.
• Inclinez légèrement le dossier du siège. Bien que les véhicules puissent être différents les uns des aut res, la
plupart des conducteurs peuvent s’asseoir à une distance de 10 in.
(250 mm), même avec le siège conducteur complètement avancé, si m-
plement en inclinant un peu le dossier de siège. Si vous avez d es diffi-
cultés à voir la route après avoir incliné votre siège, utilise z un coussin
ferme et antidérapant pour vous rehausser ou, si votre véhicule est
équipé du réglage en hauteur du siège, remontez-le.
• Si votre volant de direction est réglable, inclinez-le vers le bas. Cela
vous permet d’orienter le coussin gonflable vers votre buste pl utôt que
vers la tête et le cou.
Le siège doit être réglé selon les recommandations de la NHTSA ci-des-
sus, tout en conservant le contrôle des pédales et du volant, e t la vue des
commandes au tableau de bord.

● Ne suspendez aux crochets à vêtements aucun cintre nu ni aucun objet
dur. En cas de déploiement des coussins gonflables SRS rideau, tous ces
objets pourraient se transformer en projectiles et causer des b lessures
graves, voire mortelles.
● Si une housse en vinyle recouvre la partie où le coussins gonfl able SRS
de genoux se déploie, veillez à l’enlever.
● N’utilisez aucun accessoire de siège venant recouvrir les zones de
déploiement des coussins gonflables SRS latéraux, car il risque rait d’en
gêner le déploiement. De tels accessoires peuvent empêcher les coussins
gonflables latéraux de fonctionner correctement, désactiver le dispositif ou
entraîner le déploiement accidentel des coussins latéraux, entr aînant la
mort ou des blessures graves.
● Évitez de faire subir des chocs ou des pressions excessives aux zones
renfermant les composants des coussins gonflables SRS.
En effet, cela pourrait entraîner un mauvais fonctionnement des coussins
gonflables SRS.
● Ne touchez à aucun composant des coussins gonflables SRS immédi ate-
ment après leur déploiement (gonflage), car ils pourraient être chauds.
● Si vous avez des difficultés à respirer après le déploiement des coussins
gonflables SRS, ouvrez une porte ou une vitre pour faire entrer de l’air
frais, ou bien descendez du véhicule si cela ne présente pas de danger.
Retirez tout résidu dès que possible afin d’éviter d’éventuelles irritations
de la peau.
● Ne pas attacher à la clé des objets
lourds, pointus ou très durs, comme
d’autres clés par exemple. Ces objets
risquent d’entraver le déploiement du
coussin gonflable SRS de genoux ou
d’être projetés en direction du siège
conducteur par la force de déploiement,
constituant ainsi un danger potentiel.
