4465-6. Driving tips
Perform the following according to
the driving conditions:
Do not try to forcibly open a win-
dow or move a wiper that is fro -
zen. Pour warm water over the
frozen area to melt the ice. Wipe
away the water immediately to
prevent it from freezing.
To ensure proper operation of
the climate control system fan,
remove any sno w that has accu-
mulated on the air inlet vents in
front of the windshield.
Check for and remove any
excess ice or snow that may
have accumulated on the exte -
rior lights, vehicle’s roof, chassis,
around the tires or on the brakes.
Remove any snow or mud from
the bottom of your shoes before
getting in the vehicle.
Accelerate the veh icle slowly, keep
a safe distance between you and
the vehicle ahead, and drive at a
reduced speed suitable to road
conditions.
Park the vehicle and move the
s hif t le ve r to P w itho u t se tt ing th e
parking brake. The parking brake
may freeze up, preventing it from
being released. If the vehicle is
parked without setting the park -
ing brake, make sure to block the
wheels.
Failure to do so may be danger -
ous because it may cause the
vehicle to move unexpectedly,
possibly leading to an accident.
When the parking brake is in automatic
mode, release the parking brake after
shifting the shift lever to P. ( →P.326)
If the vehicle is left parked with
the brakes damp in cold tem -
peratures, there is a possibility of
the brakes freezing.
If the vehicle is parked without
setting the parking brake, con -
firm that the shift lever cannot be
moved out of P*.
*: The shift lever will be locked if it is
attempted to be shifted from P to any
other position with out depressing the
brake pedal. If the shift lever can be
shifted from P, t here may be a prob-
lem with the shift lock system. Have
the vehicle inspected by any autho -
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota autho -
rized repairer, or any reliable repairer
immediately.

■When parking the vehicle
When parking the vehicle without
applying the parki ng brake, make
sure to chock the wheels. If you do
not chock the wheels, the vehicle may move unexpectedly, possibly result-
ing in an accident.
4485-6. Driving tips
Specific design characteristics
give it a higher center of gravity
than ordinary passenger cars.
This vehicle design feature
causes this type of vehicle to be
more likely to rollover. And, utility
vehicles have a significantly
higher rollover rate than other
types of vehicles.
An advantage of the higher
ground clearance is a better view
of the road allowing you to antici -
pate problems.
It is not designed for cornering at
the same speeds as ordinary
passenger cars any more than
low-slung sports cars are
designed to perform satisfactorily
under off-road conditions. There -
fore, sharp turns at excessive
speeds may cause the vehicle to
rollover.
When driving your vehicle off-road,
please observe the following pre -
Utility vehicle precau-
tions
This vehicle belongs to the
utility vehicle class, which has
higher ground clearance and
narrower tread i n relation to
the height of its center of grav -
ity to make it capable of per -
forming in a wide variety of off-
road applications.

■Utility vehicle precautions
Always observe the following precau -
tions to minimize the risk of death, serious injury or damage to your vehi-
cle:
●In a rollover crash, an unbelted per - son is significantly more likely to die
than a person wearing a seat belt.
Therefore, the driver and all pas -
sengers should alwa ys fasten their seat belts.
●Avoid sharp turns or abrupt maneu - vers, if at all possible.
Failure to operate this vehicle cor-
rectly may result in loss of control or vehicle rollover causing death or
serious injury.
●Loading cargo on the roof luggage
carrier (if equipped) will make the
center of the vehicle gravity higher. Avoid high speeds, sudden starts,
sharp turns, sudden braking or
abrupt maneuvers, otherwise it may result in loss of control or vehicle
rollover due to failure to operate this
vehicle correctly.
●Always slow down in gusty cross -
winds. Because of its profile and higher center of gravity, your vehi -
cle is more sensitive to side winds
than an ordinary passenger car. Slowing down will allow you to have
better control.
●Do not drive horizontally across
steep slopes. Driving straight up or
straight down is preferred. Your vehicle (or any sim ilar off-road vehi-
cle) can tip over sideways much
more easily than forward or back- ward.
Off-road driving
4887-1. Maintenance and care
7-1.Maintenance and care
Working from top to bottom, lib-
erally apply water to the vehicle
body, wheel wells and underside
of the vehicle to remove any dirt
and dust.
Wash the vehicle body using a
sponge or soft cloth, such as a
chamois.
For hard-to-remove marks, use
car wash soap and rinse thor -
oughly with water.
Wipe away any water.
Wax the vehicle when the water-
proof coating deteriorates.
If water does not bead on a clean sur -
face, apply wax when the vehicle body
is cool.
■Before car washes
Check that the fuel filler door and charging port lid on your vehicle are
closed properly.
■Automatic car washes
●Before washing the vehicle:
• Fold the mirrors
• Turn off the power back door (if equipped)
Start washing from t he front of the vehi-
cle. Make sure to extend the mirrors
before driving.
●Brushes used in automatic car
washes may scratch the vehicle sur - face, parts (wheel, etc.) and harm
your vehicle’s paint.
●Rear spoiler may not be washable in
some automatic c ar washes. There
may also be an increased risk of dam - age to vehicle.
■High pressure car washes
As water may enter the cabin, do not
bring the nozzle tip near the gaps around the doors or perimeter of the
windows, or spray th ese areas continu-
ously.
■Note for a smart e ntry & start sys- tem
If the door handle becomes wet while
the electronic key is within the effective range, the door may lock and unlock
repeatedly. In that c ase, follow the fol-
lowing correction procedures to wash the vehicle:
●Place the key in a position 2 m (6 ft.) or more separate from the vehicle
while the vehicle is being washed.
(Take care to ensur e that the key is not stolen.)
●Set the electronic key to battery-sav - ing mode to disable the smart entry &
start system. ( →P.224)
■Wheels and wheel ornaments
●Remove any dirt immediately by using
a neutral detergent.
●Wash detergent of f with water imme-
diately after use.
●To protect the paint from damage,
make sure to observe the following
precautions. • Do not use acidic, alkaline or abrasive
detergent.
• Do not use hard brushes.
• Do not use deterg ent on the wheels when they are hot, such as after driv -
ing or parking in hot weather.
Cleaning and protecting
the vehicle exterior
Perform the following to pro -
tect the vehicle and maintain it
in prime condition:
Cleaning instructions
5928-2. Steps to take in an emergency
WARNING
●If the vehicle does not drive straight
or you feel a pull through the steer -
ing wheel, stop the vehicle and check the following.
• Tire condition. The tire may have
separated from the wheel.
• Tire inflation pressure. If the tire
inflation pressure is 130 kPa (1.3
kgf/cm2 or bar, 19 psi) or less, the tire may be severely damaged.
NOTICE
■When performing an emergency
repair
●A tire should only be repaired with
the emergency tire puncture repair
kit if the damage is caused by a sharp object such as nail or screw
passing through the tire tread.
Do not remove the sharp object from the tire. Removing the object
may widen the opening and disen -
able emergency repair with the
repair kit.
●The repair kit is not waterproof.
Make sure that the repair kit is not exposed to water, s uch as when it
is being used in the rain.
●Do not put the repa ir kit directly
onto dusty ground such as sand at
the side of the road. If the repair kit vacuums up dust etc., a malfunc -
tion may occur.
●Make sure to stand the kit with the
bottle vertical. The kit cannot work
properly if it is laid on its side.
■Precautions for the emergency
tire puncture repair kit
●The repair kit power source should
be 12 V DC suitable for vehicle use.
Do not connect the repair kit to any other source.
●If fuel splatters on the repair kit, the repair kit may det eriorate. Take
care not to allow fu el to contact it.
●Place the repair kit in a storage to
prevent it from being exposed to dirt
or water.
●Store the repair ki t in the luggage
compartment out of reach of chil - dren.
●Do not disassemble or modify the repair kit. Do not subject parts such
as the air pressure indicator to
impacts. This ma y cause a mal- function.
■To avoid damage to the tire pres - sure warning valves and trans -
mitters
When a tire is repa ired with liquid sealants, the tire pressure warning
valve and transmitter may not operate
properly. If a liquid sealant is used, contact any authorized Toyota retailer
or Toyota authoriz ed repairer, or any
reliable repairer or other qualified ser - vice shop as soon as possible. After
use of liquid sealant, make sure to
replace the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter when repairing
or replacing the tire. ( →P.511)
