■If the shift lever cannot be shifted from P
First, check whether the brake pedal is being depressed.
If the shift lever cannot be shifted with your foot on the brak e pedal, there may
be a problem with the shift lock system. Have the vehicle inspected by your
Toyota dealer, immediately.
The following steps may be used as an emergency measure to ensu re that
the shift lever can be shifted.
Releasing the shift lock:
Set the parking brake.
Turn the engine switch off.
Depress the brake pedal.
■ If the “S” indicator does not come on even after shifting the s hift lever to
S
This may indicate a malfunction in the automatic transmission s ystem. Have
the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately.
■ Downshift restriction warning buzzer (S mode)
To help ensure safety and driving performance, downshifting ope ration may
sometimes be restricted. In some circumstances, downshifting ma y not be
possible even when the shift lever is operated. (A buzzer will sound twice.)
Pry the cover up with a flathead screw-
driver or equivalent tool.
To prevent damage to the cover, cover
the tip of the screwdriver with a rag.
Press the shift lock override button.
The shift lever can be shifted while the
button is pressed.

WARNING
■When driving on slippery road surfaces
Do not accelerate or shift gears suddenly.
Sudden changes in engine braking may cause the vehicle to spin or skid,
resulting in an accident.
■ To prevent an accident when releasing the shift lock
Before pressing the shift lock override button, make sure to se t the parking
brake and depress the brake pedal.
If the accelerator pedal is accidentally depressed instead of t he brake pedal
when the shift lock override button is pressed and the shift le ver is shifted
out of P, the vehicle may suddenly start, possibly leading to a n accident
resulting in death or serious injury.

Turn signal lever
The turn signal lever can be used to show the following intentions of
the driver:
Right turn
Lane change to the right (push
and hold the lever partway)
The right hand signals will flash
until you release the lever.
Lane change to the left (push
and hold the lever partway)
The left hand signals will flash until
you release the lever.
Left turn
■Turn signals can be operated when
The engine switch is in IGNITION ON mode.
■ If the indicator flashes faster than usual
Check that a light bulb in the front or rear turn signal lights has not burned
out.

Headlight switch
Operating the switch turns on the lights as follows:
The daytime running
lights turn off.
The side marker, park-
ing, tail, license plate,
instrument panel lights,
and daytime running
lights ( P. 228) turn on.
The headlights and all
lights listed above

The headlights, day-
time running lights

■Daytime running light system
●The daytime running lights illuminate using the same lights as the headlights
and illuminate dimmer than the headlights.
● To make your vehicle more visible to other drivers during dayti me driving,
the daytime running lights turn on automatically when all of the following
conditions are met. (The daytime running lights are not designe d for use at
night.)
• The engine is running
• The parking brake is released
• The headlight switch is in the or “AUTO”
* position
*: When the surroundings are bright
The daytime running lights remain on after they illuminate, even if the parking
brake is set again.
● For the U.S.A.: Daytime running lights can be turned off by ope rating the
switch.
● Compared to turning on the headlights, the daytime running ligh t system
offers greater durability and consumes less electricity, so it can help improve
fuel economy.
■ Headlight control sensor
■ Automatic light off system
●When the headlights are on: The headlights and tail lights turn off 30 sec-
onds after a door is opened and closed if the engine switch has been
switched to ACCESSORY or OFF mode.
● When only the tail lights are on: The tail lights turn off automatically if the
engine switch is switched to ACCESSORY or OFF mode and driver’s door
is opened.
To turn the lights on again, turn the engine switch to IGNITION ON mode, or
turn the light switch off once and then back to the or positi on.
■ Automatic headlight leveling system
The level of the headlights is automatically adjusted according to the number
of passengers and the loading condition of the vehicle to ensur e that the
headlights do not interfere with other road users. The sensor may not function properly if an
object is placed on the sensor, or anything
that blocks the sensor is affixed to the
windshield.
Doing so interferes with the sensor
detecting the level of ambient light and
may cause the automatic headlight sys-
tem to malfunction.

Driving
■Welcome lighting
If the headlight switch is turned to and the surrounding area is dark,
unlocking the doors using the smart key system or wireless remo te control
will turn the parking lights and tail lights on automatically.
■ If the automatic headlight levelin g system warning light flashes
It may indicate a malfunction in the system. Contact your Toyota dealer.
■ Light reminder buzzer
A buzzer sounds when the engine switch is turned to ACCESSORY or OFF
mode and the driver’ door is opened while the tail lights are t urned on.
■ Customization
Settings (e.g. light sensor sensitivity) can be changed.

NOTICE
■To prevent battery discharge
Do not leave the lights on longer than necessary when the engin e is not
running.

■Temporary lowering sensor sensitivity
The sensitivity of the sensor can be temporarily lowered.
Vehicles without PCS (Pre-Collision System):
To lower the sensitivity, push and hold on the inside rear view mirror for
15 to 20 seconds, and release. The indicator light on the insid e rear view mir-
ror will flash to indicate that the sensitivity has been lowere d.
When the engine switch is turned off, the sensitivity will be r eturned to its nor-
mal level.
Vehicles with PCS (Pre-Collision System):
Turn the engine switch off while the following conditions are met.
• The headlight switch is in .
• The headlight switch lever is in low beam position. Turn the engine switch to IGNITION ON mode.
Within 30 seconds after , repeat pushing the headlight switch l ever to
the high beam position then pulling it to the low beam position quickly 10
times, then leave the lever in high beam position.
Automatic High Beam (headlights) may turn on even the vehicle i s stopped.

■The windshield wiper and washer can be operated when
The engine switch is in IGNITION ON mode.
■ Raindrop sensor (vehicles with rain-sensing windshield wipers)
●If the wiper switch is turned to the “AUTO” position while the engine switch is
in IGNITION ON mode, the wipers will operate once to show that “AUTO”
mode is activated.
● When the sensor sensitivity ring is turned toward high while in “AUTO”
mode, the wipers will operate once to indicate that the sensor sensitivity is
enhanced.
● If the temperature of the rain drop sensor is 185 F (85 C) or higher, or -22 F
(-30 C) or lower, the automatic operation may not occur. In this cas e, oper-
ate the wipers in any mode other than “AUTO”.
