*1: These lights turn on when the engine switch is turned to the “ON” position
(vehicles without a smart key system) or IGNITION ON mode (vehicles
with a smart key system) to indicate that a system check is being per-
formed. They will turn off after the engine is started, or after a few seconds.
There may be a malfunction in a system if a light does not come on, or if
the lights do not turn off. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.
*2: The light turns on when the system is operating.
*3: The light flashes to indicate a malfunction.
*4: Depending on the operating condition, the color and illuminati ng/flashing
state of the light change.

Rear seats
Park the vehicle in a safe place.
Apply the parking brake firmly and shift the shift lever to P. (P. 190)
Adjust the position of the front seat and the angle of the seatback.
( P. 143)
Depending on the position of the f ront seat, if the seatback is folded
backward, it may interfere wit h the operation of the rear seat.
Lift up and push down the head restraints of the rear outboard
seats, and lower the head rest raint of the rear center seat.
( P. 147)
Pull the seatback lock release
lever and fold t he seatback down.
To avoid trapping the seat belt
between the seat and the inside of
the vehicle, pass the seat belt
inside the seat belt guide and then
return the seatback securely to
the locked position.
The seatbacks of the rear seats can be folded down.

WARNING
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
■ When folding the rear seatbacks down
● Do not fold the seatbacks down while driving.
● Stop the vehicle on level ground, set the parking brake and shi ft the shift
lever to P.
● Do not allow anyone to sit on a folded seatback or in the lugga ge compart-
ment while driving.
● Do not allow children to enter the luggage compartment.
● Do not allow anyone to sit on the rear center seat if the rear right seat is
folded down, as the seat belt buckle for the rear center seat belt is then
concealed under the folded seat and cannot be used.
● Be careful not to get your hand caught when folding the rear seatbacks.
● Adjust the position of the front seats before folding down the rear seat-
backs so that the front seats do not interfere with the rear se atbacks when
folding down the rear seatbacks.
■ After returning the rear seat back to the upright position
●Make sure that the seatback is securely
locked in position by lightly rocking it
back and forth.
If the seatback is not securely locked,
the red marking will be visible on the
seatback lock release knob. Make sure
that the red marking is not visible.
● Check that the seat belts are not twisted
or caught in the seatback.
If the seat belt gets caught between the
seatback’s securing hook and latch, it
may damage the seat belt.

■When starting off on an uphill
The hill-start assist control will activate. ( P. 301)
■ Driving in the rain
●Drive carefully when it is raining, because visibility will be reduced, the win-
dows may become fogged-up, and the road will be slippery.
● Drive carefully when it starts to rain, because the road surface will be espe-
cially slippery.
● Refrain from high speeds when driving on an expressway in the r ain,
because there may be a layer of water between the tires and the road sur-
face, preventing the steering and brakes from operating properl y.
■ Engine speed while driving
In the following conditions, the engine speed may become high while driving.
This is due to automatic up-shifting control or down-shifting implementation to
meet driving conditions. It does not indicate sudden acceleration.
●The vehicle is judged to be driving uphill or downhill
● When the accelerator pedal is released
● When the brake pedal is depressed while sport mode is selected
● When the brake pedal is depressed suddenly and vehicle speed is reduced
sharply
■ Restraining the engine out put (Brake Override System)
● When the accelerator and brake pedals are depressed at the same time, the
engine output may be restrained.
● A warning message is displayed on the multi-information display while the
system is operating.
■ Restraining sudden start (Drive-Start Control)
● When the following unusual operation is performed, the engine o utput may
be restrained.
• When the shift lever is shifted from R to D, D to R, N to R, P to D, or P to
R (D includes M) with the accelerator pedal depressed, a warning mes-
sage appears on the multi-information display. If a warning mes sage is
shown on the multi-information display, read the message and fo llow the
instruction.
• When the accelerator pedal is depressed too much while the veh icle is in
reverse.
●
While Drive-Start Control is being activated, your vehicle may have trouble
escaping from the mud or fresh snow. In such case, deactivate T RAC (
P. 3 0 1 )
to cancel Drive-Start Control so that the vehicle may become ab le to escape
from the mud or fresh snow.
