If a change in the speed limit of 20 km/h or more
is de tected and automatic adoption of speed lim-
its is activated, the new speed limit is automati-
cally adop ted as the stored speed (/ page 283).The driven speed is adjusted when
theve hicle is
le ve l with the tra1c sign at the latest. In the case
of signs indicating entry into an urban area, the
speed is adap ted according tothe speed permit-
te d within the urban area. The speed limit display
in the driver's display is alw ays updated when the
ve hicle is le vel with the tra1c sign.
If yo u are driving on German mo torw ays and there
is no speed limit, the system uses the speed
stored for a str etch ofroad with no speed limit as
th e set speed. If you do not alter the stored speed
on a str etch ofroad with no speed limit, there c-
ommended speed of 130 km/h is adop ted.
If Ac tive Distance Assist DISTRONIC has been put
into passive mode bypressing the accelerator
pedal, only speed limits which are higher than the
set speed are adop ted.
The maximum permissible speed does not take
th ero ad condition and cur rent we ather and tra1c
conditions into account. Adjust your speed
accordingl y,when necessar y.

If
th e system de tects that the driver has not
steered theve hicle for a considerable period of
time or has remo vedth eir hands from the steering
wheel, visual warning 1 is issued. If the driver
still does not steer theve hicle, or gives no con/r-
mation tothe system, a warning tone sounds in
addition tothe visual warning message.

de tection of Active Steering Assist (/ page 284).
Ac tive Emer gency Stop Assist issues thefo llowing
wa rnings in order:
R Display message 1appears in the driver's
displa y. R

sounds.
R The Beginning emergency stop message
appears in the driver's displa y,a continuous
wa rning tone sounds, theve hicle no lon ger
accelerates, and there is a slight, repeated
te nsioning of the seat belt.
R The vehicle speed is reduced in increments
until it is at a standstill. Sharp brake impulses
are also produced.
Depending on the countr y,a lane change tothe
adjacent right-hand lane is carr ied out, if possible.
% It is only possible tochange across one lane
and only into theright-hand lane, and not
onto the hard shoulder.
When automatic braking is initiated, Active Dis-
ta nce Assist DISTRONIC is deactivated. Depend-
ing on the countr y,the hazard warning light sys-
te m is switched on.
When theve hicle is stationar y,thefo llowing
actions are car ried out:
R The vehicle is secured with the electric par k-
ing brake. R
The vehicle is unloc ked.
R If possible, an emer gency call is placed tothe
Mercedes-Benz emerg ency call centre.
Before automatic braking is initiated, you can can-
cel Active Emer gency Stop Assist bystee ring.
Yo u can cancel the inter vention byActive Emer-
ge ncy Stop Assist aTer automatic braking is initi-
ated byone of thefo llowing actions:
R Accelerating or braking: the emer gency stop is
cancelled, but thewa rning message ,wa rning
to ne and po wer steering remain active
R Steering: po wer-assis ted steering is cancelled,
th ewa rning message andwarning tone remain
active and theve hicle continues tobe braked
% Active Emer gency Stop Assist can initiate an
emer gency stop a maximum of thre e times
within one driving cycle. Subsequentl y,Ac tive
St eering Assist and Active Emer gency Stop
Assist are deactivated forth at driving cycle.

R If visibility is poor, e.g. due toinsu1cient illu-
mination of thero ad, highly variable shade
conditions, rain, sno w,fog, swirling dust or
heavy spr ay.
R Ifth ere is glare, e.g. from oncoming tra1c,
direct sunlight or re0ections.
R Ifth e windscreen in the area of the multifunc-
tion camera is dirty, or if the camera is misted
up, damaged or co vered. R
If tra1c signs are di1cult todetect, e.g.
because they are dirty, co vered, faded, co v-
ered with ice, damaged, badly positioned,
poor lylit or twisted.
R Active tra1c signs with LED displa ysmay not
be de tected cor rectly or at all due to technical
fa ctors, such as transmission frequency.
R Ifth e information on the navigation system's
digital map is incor rect, incomple teor out of
date.
R If signs or thero ad la yout is ambiguous, e.g.
tra1c signs in roadwor ks, at exits and ramp s,
in neighbou ring lanes or parallel roads.
R If signs do not conform tothe standard.
R If signs or road la youts are speci/c tothe
count ryand deviate from thero ute guidance
in the navigation system, e.g. at or be yond
construction sites.
R ATer sharp turns and tight bends, when tra1c
signs are outside the camera's /eld of vision.

The cross tra1c warning can warnyou of crossing
tra1c when you are exiting a parking space. The
ra dar sensors in the bumper also monitor the area
adjacent totheve hicle.
The cross tra1c warning is active under thefo l-
lowing conditions:

Warning for crossing traffic ahead: theve hi-
