The driver is requ ired tokeep their hands on the
stee ring wheel at all times and be able tointer-

cle and keep it in lane. The driver must expect a
ch ange from active topassive mode or vice versa
at any time. If

steered theve hicle for a considerable period of time or has
remo vedth eir hands from the steering
wheel, an optical warning is given /rst. Display 1
appears in the driver's displa y.Ifth e driver still
does not steer theve hicle, or gives no con/rma-
tion tothe system, a warning tone sounds in addi-
tion tothe visual warning message.
If th e driver does not react tothis wa rning for a
considerable period, an emer gency stop is initi-
ated (/ page 286).
The warning is not issued or is stopped as soon as
th e system de tects that the driver has touched
th e steering wheel.

Ac tive Steering Assist has a limited steering tor-
qu efo r lateral guidance. In some cases, the steer-
ing inter vention is not su1cient tokeep theve hi-
cle in the lane.
The system may be impaired or may not function
in thefo llowing instances:
R There is poor visibility, e.g. due tosno w,rain,
fo g, heavy spr ay,gr eatly varying light condi-
tions or strong shadow s onthe car riag ewa y.
R There is glare, e.g. from oncoming tra1c,
di re ct sunlight or re0ections.
R Insu1cient road illumination.
R The windscreen is dirty, mis ted up, damaged
or co vered in the vicinity of the camera, e.g.
by a stic ker.
R No, or se veral, unclear lane markings are pres-
ent for one lane, or the markings change
qu ickl y,forex ample, in a construction area or
junctions.
R The lane markings are wornawa y,dark or co v-

Depending on the countr y,a lane change tothe
adjacent right-hand lane is carr ied out, if possible.
% It is only possible tochange across one lane
and only into theright-hand lane, and not
onto the hard shoulder.
When automatic braking is initiated, Active Dis-
ta nce Assist DISTRONIC is deactivated. Depend-
ing on the countr y,the hazard warning light sys-
te m is switched on.
When theve hicle is stationar y,thefo llowing
actions are car ried out:
R The vehicle is secured with the electric par k-
ing brake. R
The vehicle is unloc ked.
R If possible, an emer gency call is placed tothe
Mercedes-Benz emerg ency call centre.
