EBU29943Engine trouble warning light “ ”
This warning light comes on or flashes when an
electrical circuit monitoring the engine is not work-
ing correctly. When this occurs, have a Yamaha
dealer check the self-diagnosis system.
The electrical circuit of the warning light can be
checked by turning the key to “ ” (on). The
warning light should come on for a few seconds,
and then go off.
If the warning light does not come on initially when
the key is turned to “ ” (on), or if the warning
light remains on, have a Yamaha dealer check the
electrical circuit.EBU30761Self-diagnosis deviceThis model is equipped with a self-diagnosis de-
vice for various electrical circuits.
If a problem is detected in any of those circuits,
the engine trouble warning light will come on or
flash. If this occurs, have a Yamaha dealer check
the vehicle.
NOTICEECB01181To prevent engine damage, be sure to consult
a Yamaha dealer as soon as possible if this oc-
curs. EBU18068Handlebar switches1. Light switch “ / /OFF”

TIPConfirm the gasoline pump nozzle has the same
fuel identification mark.
About the recommended fuel
This model’s engine has been designed to use
regular unleaded gasoline. The research octane
number should be 95 or higher. If knocking or
pinging occurs, try a gasoline of a different brand
or higher octane.TIPGasoline containing ethanol can be used if the
ethanol content does not exceed 10% (E10). Gas-
oline containing methanol is not recommended
because it can cause damage to the fuel system
or vehicle performance problems. NOTICEECB00071Use only unleaded gasoline. The use of leaded
gasoline will cause severe damage to internal
engine parts, such as the valves and piston
rings, as well as to the exhaust system.
Recommended fuel:Regular unleaded gasoline only
Fuel tank capacity: 11 L (2.9 US gal, 2.4 Imp.gal)
Fuel reserve amount: 2.9 L (0.77 US gal, 0.64 Imp.gal)1. EN228 fuel identification mark

5causing injury or property damage. Shock ab-
sorber cylinder damage could also result in
poor handling which could cause an accident.
Do not tamper with or attempt to open the
cylinder assembly.
Do not subject the shock absorber assembly
to an open flame or other high heat.
Do not deform or damage the cylinder in any
way.
Do not dispose of a damaged or worn out
shock absorber assembly yourself. Take the
shock absorber assembly to a Yamaha deal-
er for any service.
EBU30996Rear shock absorber (For models
equipped with adjustable spring pre-
load and damping force)The shock absorber spring preload, rebound
damping force, and compression damping force
(fast and slow compression damping) can be ad-
justed.
WARNING
EWB02681Suspension components become hot during
operation. Never touch the compression
damping force adjusting bolt and screw, the
rebound damping force adjusting screw or the
oil reservoir with your bare hand or skin until
the suspension components have cooled. Notes on adjusting the suspension
A special wrench can be obtained at a Yamaha
dealer to make the spring preload adjustment.
When adjusting the damping force settings, turn
the adjuster in direction (a) until it stops, and
then count the turns or clicks in direction (b).
Although a damping force adjuster may turn or
click beyond the stated minimum settings, such
adjustments are ineffective and may damage
the suspension.NOTICEECB00091Never turn an adjusting mechanism beyond
the minimum and maximum settings. Spring preload

6Tire pressure gauge
A low-pressure tire gauge is included as standard
equipment with your vehicle. (See page 9-2.)
When using the tire pressure gauge, make two
measurements and use the second reading as grit
in the gauge or tire valve could have caused the
first reading to be incorrect.
Tire wear
If the tire is damaged or the tire tread depth de-
creases to 3 mm (0.12 in) or less, replace the tire.
Tire information
This ATV is equipped with tubeless tires and tire
air valves. After extensive tests, only the tires list-
ed below are approved for this model by Yamaha.

OPERATION
EBU19902Read the Owner’s Manual carefully before riding
the ATV. If there is a control or function you do not
understand, ask your Yamaha dealer.
WARNING
EWB00632Read the Owner’s Manual carefully to become
familiar with all controls in order to help pre-
vent any loss of control, which could cause an
accident or injury. EBU29954Starting the engineNOTICEECB00151See the “Engine break-in” section on page 7-5
prior to operating the engine for the first time. 1. Set the parking brake.
2. Turn the key to “ ” (on) and the engine stopswitch to “ ”.
The following warning lights should come on
for a few seconds, then go off.
Coolant temperature warning light
Fuel level warning light
Engine trouble warning light
NOTICEECB00826To avoid possible damage, do not operate the
ATV if a warning light does not work as de-
scribed above. 3. Shift the transmission into neutral. The neutral
indicator light should come on, if it does not
come on, have a Yamaha dealer check the
electrical circuit.TIPThis model is equipped with an ignition circuit cut-
off system. The engine can be started under the
following conditions.
The transmission is in neutral.
The clutch is disengaged with the transmission
in gear. However, it is recommended to shift
into neutral before starting the engine. 4. Completely close the throttle lever and start
the engine by pushing the start switch.

TIPFor parts equipped with a grease nipple, use a
grease gun. EBU30037BatteryThis model is equipped with a 12-volt VRLA
(valve-regulated lead-acid) battery. There is no
need to check the electrolyte or to add distilled
water. However, the battery lead connections
need to be checked and tightened, and the bat-
tery terminals cleaned if corroded. If the battery
seems to have discharged, recharge it as soon as
possible.TIPWear gloves and eye protection in a ventilated
area away from sparks and open flames. Wash
hands after handling.
It is recommended to have the battery serviced
by a Yamaha dealer.
WARNING
EWB02161Battery electrolyte is poisonous and danger-
ous, as it contains sulfuric acid, which can cau-
se severe burns. Avoid contact with skin, eyes
or clothing. Always shield your eyes when
working near batteries.
Antidote:
EXTERNAL: Flush with water.
INTERNAL: Drink large quantities of water or
milk. Follow with milk of magnesia, beaten egg
or vegetable oil. Call a physician immediately.
EYES: Flush with water for 15 minutes and get
prompt medical attention.
Batteries produce explosive gases. Keep
sparks, flame, cigarettes or other sources of
ignition away. Ventilate when charging or using
in an enclosed space.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. To remove the battery
1. Remove the seat. (See page 5-12.)
2. Remove the battery holding plate (together with the battery cover) by removing the quick
fastener screws and the bolts.
