Tips for re ducin g fuel con-
sumption
Fuel consumption depends largely on
your riding style. Consider the follow-
ing tips to reduce fuel consumption:
Shift up swiftly, and avoid high en-
gine speeds during acceleration.
Do not rev the engine while shift-
ing down, and avoid high engine
speeds with no load on the en-
gine.
Turn the engine off instead of let-
ting it idle for an extended length
of time (e.g., in traffic jams, at traf-
fic lights or at railroad crossings).
EAU40584
Parkin g
When parking, stop the engine by turn-
ing the main switch to “OFF”, and then
remove the key.
TIP
When the main switch is turned to
“OFF” and the transmission is in gear,
the rear wheel cannot be moved.
WARNING
EWA14524
Always stop the en gine usin g
the main switch. When the en-
g ine stop switch has been used
in an emer gency, be sure to ap-
ply the front or rear brake while
the main switch is still on, as the
clutch automatically disen gag -
es a few secon ds after the en-
g ine is turne d off, an d the rear
wheel will move freely.
Since the en gine an d exhaust
system can become very hot,
park in a place where ped estri-
ans or chil dren are not likely to
touch them and b e burne d.
Do not park on a slope or on soft
groun d, otherwise the vehicle
may overturn, increasin g the
risk of a fuel leak an d fire.
Do not park near grass or other
flammab le materials which
mi ght catch fire.

TIP
Make sure that the O-ring is properly
seated.
7. Install the new oil filter cartridge,
and then tighten it to the specified
torque with a torque wrench.
8. Install the engine oil drain bolt and its new gasket, and then tighten
the bolt to the specified torque.
9. Refill with the specified amount of the recommended engine oil.
TIP
Be sure to wipe off spilled oil on any
parts after the engine and exhaust sys-
tem have cooled down.
NOTICE
ECA11621
In or der to prevent clutch slip-
pa ge (since the en gine oil also
lu bricates the clutch), do not
mix any chemical add itives. Do
not use oils with a d iesel speci-
fication of “CD” or oils of a hi gh-
er quality than specified . In
a ddition, do not use oils la bele d
“ENERGY CONSERVING II” or
hi gher.
Make sure that no forei gn mate-
rial enters the crankcase.
10. Check the O-ring for damage, and replace it if necessary.

YCC-S clutch
This model is equipped with a hydrau-
lic clutch, therefore, it is necessary to
check the YCC-S clutch fluid level and
check the hydraulic system for leak-
age. (See page 6-25.)
TIP
If shifting becomes rough or clutch
slippage occurs, or if you notice poor
acceleration or engine stalls, have a
Yamaha dealer check the clutch for wear.
EAU37914
Checkin g the brake lever free
play
There should be no free play at the
brake lever end. If there is free play,
have a Yamaha dealer inspect the
brake system.
WARNING
EWA14212
A soft or spon gy feelin g in the b rake
lever can in dicate the presence of
air in the hy draulic system. If there is
air in the hy draulic system, have a
Yamaha dealer blee d the system be-
fore operatin g the vehicle. Air in the
hy draulic system will diminish the
b rakin g performance, which may re-
sult in loss of control an d an acci-
d ent.

EAU22501Rear brake pad s
Check each rear brake pad for damage
and measure the lining thickness. If a
brake pad is damaged or if the lining
thickness is less than 0.8 mm (0.03 in),
have a Yamaha dealer replace the
brake pads as a set.EAU40593
Checkin g the brake an d
YCC-S clutch flui d levels
Before riding, check that the brake and
YCC-S clutch fluids are above the mi-
nimum level marks. Check the brake
and YCC-S clutch fluid levels with the
tops of the reservoirs level. Replenish
the brake and YCC-S clutch fluids if
necessary.

TIP
The rear brake fluid reservoir is lo-

The YCC-S clutch fluid reservoir is
located behind panel B. (See page

WARNING
EWA16021
Improper maintenance can result in
loss of brakin g a bility or YCC-S
clutch operation. O bserve these
precautions: Insufficient brake or YCC-S
clutch flui d may allow air to en-
ter the b rake or YCC-S clutch
system, re ducin g brakin g or
YCC-S clutch performance.
Clean the filler caps before re-
moving . Use only DOT 4 brake
flui d from a seale d container.
Use only the specified b rake flu-
i d ; otherwise, the ru bber seals
may deteriorate, causin g leak-
a g e.
Refill with the same type of
brake flui d. A ddin g a brake flui d
other than DOT 4 may result in a
harmful chemical reaction.
Be careful that water or dust
d oes not enter the brake or
YCC-S clutch flui d reservoir
when refillin g. Water will si gnifi-
cantly lower the b oiling point of
the flui d an d ma y result in vapor
lock,
an d d irt may clo g the ABS
hy draulic unit valves.
NOTICE
ECA17641
Brake flui d may d amage painte d
surfaces or plastic parts. Always
clean up spille d flui d imme diately.
The brake and YCC-S clutch fluid res-
ervoir diaphragms will lose their shape
from the negative pressure if the fluid
level goes down too far. Be sure to re-
turn the diaphragms to their original
shape before reinstalling them.
As the brake pads wear, it is normal for
the brake fluid level to gradually go
down. A low brake fluid level may indi-
cate worn brake pads and/or brake
system leakage; therefore, be sure to
check the brake pads for wear and the
brake system for leakage. A low
YCC-S clutch fluid level may indicate
YCC-S clutch system leakage; there-
fore, be sure to check the YCC-S
clutch system for leakage. If the brake
or YCC-S clutch fluid level goes down
suddenly, have a Yamaha dealer check
the cause before further riding.

Chan gin g the brake an d
YCC-S clutch fluid s
Have a Yamaha dealer change the
brake and YCC-S clutch fluids at the
intervals specified in the periodic main-
tenance and lubrication chart. In addi-
tion, have the oil seals of the brake and
YCC-S clutch master cylinders and
calipers as well as the brake and
YCC-S clutch hoses replaced at the in-
tervals listed below or whenever they
are damaged or leaking.
Oil seals: Replace every two
years.
Brake and YCC-S clutch hoses:
Replace every four years.
EAU23098
Checkin g an d lu bricatin g the
ca bles
The operation of all control cables and
the condition of the cables should be
checked before each ride, and the ca-
bles and cable ends should be lubri-
cated if necessary. If a cable is
damaged or does not move smoothly,
have a Yamaha dealer check or re-
place it. WARNING! Dama ge to the
outer housin g of cab les may result
in internal rustin g an d cause inter-
ference with cab le movement. Re-
place damag ed cab les as soon as
possi ble to prevent unsafe con di-
tions.
