Volvo Structural Parts StatementVolvo is one of the leading companies for car safety.
Volvo engineers and manufactures vehicles designed to help protect vehicle occupants inthe event of a collision. Volvos are designed to absorb the impact of a collision. This energy absorption systemincluding, but not limited to, structural compo-nents such as bumper reinforcement bars,bumper energy absorbers, frames, rails, fenderaprons, A-pillars, B-pillars and body panelsmust work together to maintain cabin integrityand protect the vehicle occupants. The supplemental restraint system including but not limited to air bags, side curtain airbags, and deployment sensors work togetherwith the above components to provide propertiming for air bag deployment. Due to the above, Volvo Car USA does not support the use of aftermarket, alternative oranything other than original Volvo parts forcollision repair. Volvo Car USA also recommends using Volvo- approved replacement glass. The use of after-market glass, particularly a windshield, canhave an adverse effect on collision avoidanceand advanced lighting systems. In addition Volvo does not support the use or re-use of structural components from an exist-ing vehicle that has been previously damaged. Although these parts may appear equivalent, itis difficult to tell if the parts have been previ-ously replaced with non-OE parts or if the parthas been damaged as a result of a prior colli-sion. The quality of these used parts may alsohave been affected due to environmentalexposure.

Driver distraction A driver has a responsibility to do everything possible to ensure his or her own safety andthe safety of passengers in the vehicle andothers sharing the roadway. Part of thisresponsibility is avoiding distractions, includ-ing performing activities that are not directlyrelated to controlling the vehicle in the drivingenvironment.
Your new Volvo is, or can be, equipped with feature-rich entertainment and communica-tion systems. These include hands-free cellulartelephones, navigation systems, and multipur-pose audio systems. You may also own otherportable electronic devices for your own con-venience. When used properly and safely, theyenrich the driving experience. Improperly used,any of these could cause a distraction. For all of these systems, we want to provide the following warning that reflects the strongVolvo concern for your safety. Never use thesedevices or any feature of your vehicle in a waythat distracts you from the task of drivingsafely. Distraction can lead to a serious acci-dent. In addition to this general warning, weoffer the following guidance regarding specificnew features that may be found in your vehi-cle:

Activating and deactivating the center display The center display can be temporarily switched off and reactivated using the homebutton under the screen.
Center display's home button.
When the home button is used, the screen will go dark and the touchscreen no longer reactsto touch. The climate bar will remain visible.All functions connected to the screen continue to operate, such as climate, audio, guiding *
and apps. The center display screen can be cleaned when the display is dimmed. The dim-ming function can also be used to darken thescreen so it is not a distraction while driving. 1. Press and hold the button beneath the
screen.
> The screen will go dark (the climate barwill remain visible). All functions con- nected to the screen continue to oper-ate.
2. To reactivate the screen, briefly press the Home button.
> The view that was displayed before thescreen was turned off will be displayed again.
NOTE
The screen cannot be turned off when a prompt to perform an action is being dis-played on the screen.

The center display is turned off automati- cally when the engine is off and the driver'sdoor is opened.

Navigating in the center display's views
There are five different basic views in the cen- ter display: Home view, Top view, Climateview, App view and Function view. Thescreen is automatically activated when thedriver's door is opened.
Home viewHome view is the view displayed when the screen is activated. It consists of four tiles:
Navigation, Media, Phone and a fourth tile.
An app or vehicle function selected from the App or Function views will start in the respec- tive tile in Home view.
FM radio, for example,
will start in the Media tile.
The extra tile displays the most recently used app or vehicle function that is not related tothe other three tiles. The tiles display brief information about the respective apps.
NOTE
When the vehicle is started, information on the current status of apps will be displayedin the respective tile in Home view.

Electronic Stability Control
The Electronic Stability Control (ESC 1
) func-
tion helps the driver avoid skidding and improves the vehicle's directional stability.
This symbol will be displayed in the instrument panel whenthe system is intervening. When the system has inter- vened to apply the brakes, apulsing sound may be heard
and the vehicle may accelerate more slowlythan expected when the accelerator pedal isdepressed.
The system consists of the following sub-func- tions:

Trailer Stability Assist
WARNING
The function is supplementary driver support intended to facilitate drivingand help make it safer – it cannot han-dle all situations in all traffic, weatherand road conditions.
The driver is advised to read all sec-tions in the Owner's Manual about thisfunction to learn of its limitations,which the driver must be aware ofbefore using the function.
Driver support functions are not a sub-stitute for the driver's attention andjudgment. The driver is always respon-sible for ensuring the vehicle is drivenin a safe manner, at the appropriatespeed, with an appropriate distance toother vehicles, and in accordance withcurrent traffic rules and regulations.
Stability control 2This function helps control the driving andbraking force of each individual wheel in anattempt to stabilize the vehicle.
Spin control and active yaw controlThis function is active at low speeds andbrakes the wheels that are spinning to transfer

Engine drag control (EDC

inadvertent wheel lock, e.g. after downshiftingor using engine braking when driving at lowspeeds on a slippery surface. Inadvertent wheel lock while driving could impair the driver's ability to steer the vehicle.
Trailer Stability Assist *4
Trailer Stability Assist (TSA

help stabilize a vehicle that is towing a trailer ifthe vehicle and trailer have begun to sway.
NOTE
Trailer Stability Assist is deactivated if ESC

Electronic Stability Control in sport mode The stability system (ESC 6
) is always acti-
vated and cannot be switched off. However, the driver can select
ESC Sport Mode,
which offers more active driving characteris- tics.
With the ESC Sport Mode sub-function
selected, intervention from the system is reduced and more lateral movement is permit-ted, giving the driver more control of the vehi-cle than usual. When
ESC Sport Mode is selected, the func-
tion may seem to be disabled even though it continues to assist the driver.
NOTE
When ESC Sport Mode is selected, the
trailer stabilizer (TSA 7
) is switched off.
ESC Sport Mode also helps provide more
traction, even if the vehicle gets stuck or is driving on a loose surface such as deep snowor loose sand.

Cruise control standby mode Cruise control (CC 18
) can be deactivated and
put in standby mode. This may happen auto- matically or be due to driver intervention.
Standby mode means that the function is selected in the instrument panel but not acti-vated. In standby mode, cruise control will notregulate speed.
Standby mode due to action by the
driver
Cruise control will be deactivated and put instandby mode if any of the following occurs:
The brakes are applied.
The gear selector is moved to
N.
The vehicle is driven faster than the setspeed for more than 1 minute.
The driver must then control the vehicle'sspeed. Temporarily increasing speed using the accel- erator pedal, e.g. when passing another vehi-cle, will not affect the setting. The vehicle willreturn to the set speed when the acceleratorpedal is released.
Automatic standby modeAdaptive Cruise Control may go into standbymode if:
the wheels lose traction
the engine speed (rpm) is too low/high
the temperature in the brake systembecomes too high
the vehicle's speed goes below 30 km/h(20 mph).
The driver must then control the vehicle'sspeed.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC 20

driver maintain a constant speed with a set time interval to the vehicle ahead.
Adaptive Cruise Control can help provide a more relaxed driving experience on long tripson highways or long, straight roads with eventraffic flows.
The camera/radar sensor measures the distance to the vehicle ahead.
The driver sets a speed and a time interval to the vehicle ahead. If the camera/radar sensordetects a slower-moving vehicle ahead, yourvehicle's speed will be automatically adaptedaccording to the set time interval to that vehi-cle. When there are no longer slower-moving

The driver must then regulate vehicle speed, apply the brakes if necessary,and maintain a safe distance to othervehicles. Adaptive Cruise Control may go into standbymode if:
your vehicle's speed goes below 5 km/h(3 mph) and ACC cannot determine if thevehicle ahead is stationary or if it isanother object, e.g. a speed bump.
your vehicle's speed goes under 5 km/h(3 mph) and the vehicle ahead turns sothat ACC no longer has a vehicle to follow.
the driver opens the door.
the driver unbuckles the seat belt.
the engine speed (rpm) is too low/high.
one or more of the wheels lose traction.
the brake temperature is high.
the parking brake is applied.

Parking on a hill
Always use the parking brake when parking on a hill.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when park- ing on an incline. Selecting a gear or put-ting the automatic transmission in P may
not be sufficient to keep the vehicle sta-tionary in all situations.
If the vehicle is pointing uphill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointing away from
the curb.
If the vehicle is pointing downhill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointingtoward
the curb.
Heavy load uphill
Heavy loads, such as a trailer, could cause the vehicle to roll backward when the parkingbrake is released automatically on steep uphillgradients. To help avoid this, pull the controlupward while you are driving away. Releasethe control when the vehicle gains traction.

Parking brake malfunction
If you are unable to deactivate or activate the parking brake after several attempts, contactan authorized Volvo workshop.
A audible warning signal will sound if the park- ing brake is activated while the vehicle isbeing driven. If the vehicle must be parked before the prob- lem is rectified, turn the wheels as when park-ing on an incline and put the gear selector inP .
Low battery charge levelIf the battery charge level is too low, it will notbe possible to activate or deactivate the park-ing brake. Connect an auxiliary battery to thevehicle if the battery is discharged.
Replacing brake padsDue to the design of the electric parkingbrake, the rear brake pads must be replacedby a workshop. An authorized Volvo workshopis recommended.
