Auto-hold brakes
With the Auto-hold brake function, the driver can release the brake pedal and the brakeswill remain applied, for example, when thevehicle has stopped at a traffic light or inter-section.
When the vehicle stops, the brakes are acti- vated automatically. The function can useeither the normal brakes or the parking brakesto keep the vehicle stationary and works onflat surfaces or hills. If the driver has their seatbelt fastened or if the driver's door is closed,the brakes will disengage automatically whenthe vehicle starts driving.
NOTE
When braking to a stop on an uphill or downhill gradient, depress the brake pedalwith slightly more force than usual beforereleasing to ensure that the vehicle cannotmove at all.
The parking brake is activated if

the driver's seat belt is removed
the vehicle has been stationary for a pro- longed period of time (5-10 minutes)

Hill Start Assist
The function for assisting when starting the vehicle on inclines (HSA 4
) helps prevent the
vehicle from rolling backward when starting on an uphill gradient. When backing up a hill,HSA helps prevent the vehicle from rollingforward.
The function retains pressure from the brake pedal in the brake system for several secondsafter the brake pedal has been released. This temporary braking effect is released after a few seconds or when the driver begins driv-ing. Hill Start Assist is available even when the Auto-hold brake function is switched off.

Braking assist after a collision
In a collision in which the activation level is reached for the pyrotechnic seat belt tension-ers or airbags, or if a collision with a large ani-mal is detected, the vehicle's brakes will beautomatically activated. This function isintended to help prevent or reduce the effectsof any subsequent collision.
After a serious collision, it may no longer be possible to control and steer the vehicle. Inorder to avoid or mitigate a possible furthercollision with a vehicle or an object in the vehi-cle's path, the brake assist system is activatedautomatically to help stop the vehicle safely. If braking is not appropriate, e.g. if there is a risk of being hit by passing traffic, the drivercan override the system by depressing theaccelerator pedal. This function assumes that the brake system is intact after a collision.

Transmission
The transmission is part of the vehicle's drive- line (power transmission) between the engineand the drive wheels. The function of thetransmission is to change gears dependingon speed and power needs.
The vehicle has an 8-speed automatic trans- mission and an electric motor for rear-wheeldrive. The number of gears allows the engine'storque and power band to be effectively uti-lized. Two of the gears are overdrive gears thatsave fuel when driving at a constant enginespeed. Manual shifting is also possible. Theinstrument panel shows the gear currently inuse.

Gear selector positions for automatic transmissions
With an automatic transmission, a suitable gear is selected automatically according tocurrent speed and power requirements.
Selecting gearsThe gear selector is a shift-by-wire selector, where shifting is done electronically instead ofmechanically. This makes shifting easier andthe gear positions more distinct.

Change gear position by pushing the spring- loaded gear selector forward or rearward, or tothe side for manual shifting.

Park - P

Park is activated using the P button located
next to the gear selector. In P mode, the transmission is mechanically
locked.Select P when the vehicle is parked or when
starting the engine. The vehicle must be sta- tionary when Park is selected. To move to another gear from Park, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition inmode II.
When parking – apply the parking brake before shifting to Park.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when park- ing on an incline. Selecting a gear or put-ting the automatic transmission in P may
not be sufficient to keep the vehicle sta-tionary in all situations.
NOTE
The gear selector must be in position P in
order to lock the vehicle and set the alarm.

Grocery bag holders Grocery bag holders (hooks) help keep shop- ping bags in place and prevent them fromfalling over and spilling their contents in thecargo compartment.
On the sides of the cargo compartment
There are two fold-out holders in the side pan- els, one on each side of the cargo compart-ment.
CAUTION
The grocery bag holders are only intended to hold weights up to 5 kg (11 lbs).

Load anchoring eyelets The load anchoring eyelets in the cargo com- partment can be used to secure objects withstraps, a net, etc.

Installing and removing the cargo compartment cover *
The cover can be rolled out to conceal objects in the cargo compartment.

Press the end piece on one side of the cover into the retaining bracket in the sidepanel of the cargo compartment.
Then put the other end piece in the recess in the side panel on the opposite side.
Push the end piece down on both sides, one at a time.
> When a click is heard and the red
marks on each end piece are no longer visible, the cover is in place. Check thatit is secure.
Removing the cargo compartment cover
In retracted position:
1. Press the button on one of the cover's ends and lift out that end.For 7-seat models - remove the third row seat belt latches from the hooks above theside panels.
2. Carefully lift the cover up and out. > The other end will release automaticallyand the cover can then be lifted out ofthe cargo compartment.

Hang the third-row seat belt latches in the hooks provided in the side panels.
Grasp the handle and pull the cover out and above the side panels in the cargocompartment. Pull the cover to its endposition.
With the cover completely open (covering the cargo compartment), press the attach-ing pins at the end of the cover into thegrooves on the side panels and release thecover slightly while pressing the handlelightly downward to hook the pins into thegrooves.
> The cover will be secured in the fullyopen position. 5-seat models

On-board Diagnostic SystemOBD II is part of your vehicle's computerized engine management system. It stores diag-nostic information about your vehicle's emis-sion controls. It can light the Check Enginelight (MIL) if it detects an emission control"fault." A "fault" is a component or systemthat is not performing within an expectedrange. A fault may be permanent or temporary.OBD II will store a message about any fault.

Many states connect a computer directly to a vehicle's OBD II system. The inspector canthen read "faults." In some states, this type ofinspection has replaced the tailpipe emissiontest.
How can my vehicle fail OBD II emission
inspection?
Your vehicle can fail OBD II emission inspec- tion for any of the following reasons: If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit, your vehicle may fail inspection.
If your vehicle's Check Engine light was lit,but went out without any action on yourpart, OBD II will still have a recorded fault.Your vehicle may pass or fail, dependingon the inspection practices in your area.
If you had recent service that required dis-connecting the battery, OBD II diagnosticinformation may be incomplete and "notready" for inspection. A vehicle that is notready may fail inspection.

Turn the handle under the front edge of the hood counterclockwise to release thecatch and lift the hood.
Warning - hood not closedWhen the hood is released, a warn-ing symbol and graphic will be dis-played in the instrument panel andan audible signal will sound. If the
vehicle begins to roll, the audible signal will berepeated several times.
NOTE
If the warning symbol is illuminated or an audible warning signal sounds even thoughthe hood is securely closed, consult aworkshop - an authorized Volvo workshopis recommended.
Closing the hood1. Press down the hood until it begins to close under its own weight.
2. When the hood reaches the catch at the handle in the front edge of the vehicle, press down on the hood to close it com-pletely.
WARNING
Risk of injury! When closing, make sure that the hood is completely unobstructedand that no one can be injured.
WARNING
Make sure the hood locks securely after closing. It must audibly lock on both sides.
