Gear selector positions for automatic transmissions
With an automatic transmission, a suitable gear is selected automatically according tocurrent speed and power requirements.
Selecting gearsThe gear selector is a shift-by-wire selector, where shifting is done electronically instead ofmechanically. This makes shifting easier andthe gear positions more distinct.

Change gear position by pushing the spring- loaded gear selector forward or rearward, or tothe side for manual shifting.

Park - P
Gear selector and P position overview
Park is activated using the P button located
next to the gear selector. In P mode, the transmission is mechanically
locked.Select P when the vehicle is parked or when
starting the engine. The vehicle must be sta- tionary when Park is selected. To move to another gear from Park, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition inmode II.
When parking – apply the parking brake before shifting to Park.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when park- ing on an incline. Selecting a gear or put-ting the automatic transmission in P may
not be sufficient to keep the vehicle sta-tionary in all situations.
NOTE
The gear selector must be in position P in
order to lock the vehicle and set the alarm.

if the driver unbuckles the seat belt and opens the driver's door while the vehicle isrunning with the gear selector in a gearother than

To park a vehicle with an unbuckled seat beltand open door – end P mode by shifting to R

The system will not automatically shift to P if
the ignition is switched off while the gearselector is in the neutral position (N). This is tomake it possible to wash the vehicle in anautomatic car wash in which the vehicle ispulled forward on rolling wheels.

Reverse - R
Select R when backing up. The vehicle must
be stationary when Reverse is selected.
Neutral - N
No gear is selected and the engine can be started. Apply the parking brake if the vehicleis stationary with the gear selector in N.
To move the gear selector from N to another
gear, the brake pedal must be depressed andthe ignition in mode II.
D drive mode
D is the normal driving gear position. The
transmission shifts up or down automatically depending on acceleration and speed. The vehicle must be stationary when the gear selector is moved from R to D.
Brake - B
Brake position in instrument panel overview.
From the B position, it is possible to shift
manually. B can be selected at any time while
driving. When the accelerator pedal is released, the electric motor brakes the vehicleand the hybrid battery is recharged at thesame time. This offers additional opportunitiesto recharge the hybrid battery, since the bat-tery is charged even when the brake pedal isnot depressed. Select brake by moving the gear selector rear- ward from the D position. The currently
selected gear will be displayed in the instru-ment panel.

Push the gear selector rearward to returnto
D mode.
For smooth shifting and engine performance,the transmission will shift down automaticallyif the vehicle's speed becomes too low for theselected gear.

The steering wheel paddles are a supplement to the gear selector and make it possible toshift manually without removing your handsfrom the steering wheel.
" -": Shift down one gear.

Activating the steering wheel paddlesIn order to shift gears using the paddles, they must first be activated:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steer- ing wheel.

ChangeTo shift one gear:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steer- ing wheel and then release.As long as the engine speed (rpm) is withinthe permissible range for the selected gear, agear shift will take place each time a paddle ispulled. After each gear shift, a number indicat-ing the current gear will be displayed in theinstrument panel.

–Deactivate the paddles by pulling the right paddle ( +) toward the steering wheel and
holding it until the number of the currentgear is no longer displayed in the instru-ment panel.
> The transmission will revert to gear D
or B depending on which gear was
selected before the paddles were acti- vated.
Automatic deactivation
In gear position D, the steering wheel paddles
are deactivated after a short period of time if they are not used. The number of the currentgear will no longer be displayed in the instru-ment panel. In gear position B, the paddles will not acti-
vate automatically.

P
To move the gear selector from P to another
gear, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition in mode II.
From Neutral - N
If the gear selector is in N and the vehicle has
been stationary for at least 3 seconds (with or without the engine running), the gear selectorwill be locked in that position. To move the gear selector from N to another
gear, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition in mode II.
Messages in the instrument panelIf the gear selector is locked in position, amessage will appear in the instrument panel, e.g.

There is no mechanical shiftlock function.

Never carry a cell phone that is switched
on while refueling your vehicle. If the
phone rings, this may cause a spark that could ignite gasoline fumes, resulting in fireand injury.
WARNING
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, colorless, and odorless gas. It is present in all exhaustgases. If you ever smell exhaust fumesinside the vehicle, make sure the passengercompartment is ventilated, and immedi-ately return the vehicle to a trained andqualified Volvo service technician for cor-rection.
Demanding drivingIn demanding driving conditions, such as when towing a trailer or driving in hot weatheror for prolonged periods at high altitudes, itmay be a good idea to switch to a higher- octane fuel (AKI 14
91 or higher) or to switch to
another brand of gasoline in order to fully uti- lize the vehicle's engine capacity and optimizetraction.

Three-way catalytic converter
Keep your engine properly tuned. Certain engine malfunctions, particularly involvingthe electrical, fuel or distributor ignitionsystems, may cause unusually high three-way catalytic converter temperatures. Donot continue to operate your vehicle if youdetect engine misfire, noticeable loss ofpower or other unusual operating condi-tions, such as engine overheating or back-firing. A properly tuned engine will helpavoid malfunctions that could damage thethree-way catalytic converter.
Do not park your vehicle over combustiblematerials, such as grass or leaves, whichcan come into contact with the hotexhaust system and cause such materialsto ignite under certain wind and weatherconditions.
Excessive starter cranking (in excess ofone minute), or an intermittently firing orflooded engine can cause three-way cata-lytic converter or exhaust system over-heating.
Remember that tampering or unauthor-ized modifications to the engine, theEngine Control Module, or the vehicle maybe illegal and can cause three-way cata-lytic converter or exhaust system over- heating. This includes: altering fuel injec-tion settings or components, alteringemission system components or locationor removing components, and/or repeateduse of leaded fuel.
NOTE
Unleaded fuel is required for vehicles with three-way catalytic converters.
Heated oxygen sensorsThe heated oxygen sensors monitor the oxy- gen content of the exhaust gases. Readingsare fed into a control module that continuouslymonitors engine functions and controls fuelinjection. The ratio of fuel to air into the engineis continuously adjusted for efficient combus-tion to help reduce harmful emissions.

Battery drain
The electrical functions in the vehicle drain the battery to varying degrees. Avoid usingignition mode II when the engine is switched
off. Use ignition mode I instead, as this uses
less electrical current.
Note that certain accessories may also drain power from the electrical system. Do not usefunctions that use a lot of electrical currentwhen the engine is turned off. Examples ofsuch functions are: blower
headlights
windshield wipers
audio system (especially at high volume).
If the starter battery voltage is low, a message is shown in the driver display. The vehicle'senergy-saving function will then turn off orreduce certain functions, such as the blowerand/or the audio system.
–Charge the battery by starting the engine and let it run for at least 15 minutes (driv-ing charges the battery faster than lettingthe engine idle).

Jump starting using another battery If the start battery is discharged, current from another battery can be used to start the vehi-cle.

CAUTION
The charging point of the vehicle is only intended for jump starting the vehicle inquestion. The charging point is notintended for jump-starting another vehicle.Using the charging point to start anothervehicle could cause a fuse to blow, whichwould cause the charging point to stopworking.
If a fuse has blown, 12 V Battery Fuse failure
Service required will be displayed in the instrument panel. Volvo recommends contact- ing an authorized Volvo workshop. To avoid short circuits or other damage, the following steps are recommended when jumpstarting the battery:

4601. Put the ignition in mode

2. Make sure the auxiliary battery (the bat- tery used to jump start the discharged battery) has a voltage of 12 volts.
3. If the auxiliary battery is in another vehicle, turn off that vehicle's engine and makesure that the vehicles are not touchingeach other.
4. Clamp the red jumper cable onto the auxil- iary battery's positive (+) terminal (1).
CAUTION
Connect the jump cable carefully to pre- vent short circuits with other componentsin the engine compartment.
5. Fold back the cover over your vehicle's positive (+) jump start terminal (2).
6. Clamp the other end of the red jumper cable to your vehicle's positive (+) jump start terminal (2).
7. Clamp the black jumper cable onto the auxiliary battery's negative (-) terminal (3).
8. Clamp the other end of the black jumper cable to your vehicle's negative (-) groundpoint (4). 9. Make sure the jumper cables are securely
attached to help prevent sparks whilejump starting.
10. Start the engine of the assisting vehicle and let it run for a few minutes at a higheridling speed than normal, about1500 rpm.
11. Start your vehicle's engine. If the engine does not start, allow an additional 10minutes of charging time and then try tostart the engine again.
NOTE
When the engine is started under normal conditions, the vehicle's electrical drivemotor is prioritized – the gasoline engineremains off. This means that after the startknob has been turned clockwise, the elec-tric motor has "started" and the vehicle isready to be driven. Start of the electricmotor is indicated by the indicator lights onthe instrument panel going out and its pre-selected theme illuminating.
CAUTION
Do not touch the connections between the cable and the vehicle during the startattempt. Risk of sparking.
12. Remove the jumper cables in the reverseorder ‒ first the black cables and then the
red cables. Make sure that none of the clamps of the black jumper cables come into contactwith either vehicle's positive (+) jump startterminals or either of the red jumpercable's connected clamps.

Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Donot allow battery fluid to contact eyes,skin, fabrics or painted surfaces.

medical help immediately if eyes are affected.
Never expose the battery to open flameor electric spark. Do not smoke nearthe battery. Failure to follow theinstructions for jump starting can leadto injury.

The vehicle cannot be started if the hybrid battery is discharged.

Retractable hitch

The retractable hitch is designed to be used to tow a trailer or mount a bicycle holder. Thehitch can be easily retracted or extended asneeded. When retracted, the hitch is com-pletely concealed.
Folding out the hitch1.
Open the tailgate. There is a button for operating the hitch on the right-hand sideat the rear of the cargo compartment.Steady orange illumination from the indi-cator light in the button shows that thefolding function is active. 2. Press the button and release – pressing
too long on the button may prevent thehitch from folding out.
> The hitch will fold out and down to anunlocked position – the indicator lamp will flash orange. The hitch is ready tobe moved to the locked position.

Move the hitch to its end position, where it will lock in place – the indicator lamp willglow steadily orange.

Towing using a towline
This section refers to one vehicle being towed behind another using a towline.
Never attempt to tow a Twin Engine vehicle behind another vehicle as this could damagethe electric motor. The vehicle must instead belifted onto a tow truck and transported with allfour wheels on the bed or lifting platform ofthe truck (no wheels may touch the road).
Towing another vehicleTowing another vehicle requires a lot of power - use the Constant AWD drive mode. This
helps charge the hybrid battery and improve the vehicle's driving and roadholding characte-ristics. Before towing another vehicle, check applica- ble speed limit regulations.
Jump startingNever attempt to tow the vehicle to start theengine, as this could damage the electricmotor. Use an auxiliary battery if the start bat-tery's charge level is so low that the enginecannot be started.
CAUTION
Attempts to tow-start the vehicle could cause damage to the electrical drive motorand three-way catalytic converter.

Attaching and removing the towing eyelet
Use the towing eyelet to tow another vehicle. Screw the towing eyelet securely into placein the threaded outlet behind the cover on theright-hand side of the rear bumper.
NOTE
If the vehicle is equipped with a towbar, there is no rear attachment for the towingeye.
