Pilot Assist *38
Pilot Assist can help the driver keep the vehi- cle in the current traffic lane by providingsteering assistance and maintaining an evenspeed and a set time interval to the vehicleahead.
How Pilot Assist worksThe Pilot Assist function is primarily intended for use on highways and other major roadswhere it can help provide a more comfortableand relaxing driving experience.
The camera/radar sensor monitors the distance to the vehicle ahead and detects lane markings.
Camera and radar sensor
Distance monitor
Lane marker line monitors The driver sets the desired speed and distance to the vehicle ahead. Pilot Assist monitors thedistance to the vehicle ahead and the trafficlane's side markers using the camera andradar sensor. The system maintains the settime interval to the vehicle ahead by automati-cally adjusting your vehicle's speed and keepsyour vehicle in its lane by providing steeringassistance. If the Curve Speed Assist (CSA)
* function is
activated, it may also affect the vehicle's speed. Pilot Assist's steering assistance is based on monitoring the direction of the vehicle aheadand the traffic lane's side marker lines. Thedriver can override Pilot Assist's steering rec-ommendations at any time and steer inanother direction, e.g. to change lanes or avoidobstacles on the road. If the camera/radar sensor cannot detect the lane's side marker lines or if Pilot Assist isunable for some other reason to clearly inter-pret the lane, Pilot Assist will temporarilydeactivate steering assistance until it can onceagain interpret the lane markings. However, the speed and distance warnings will remainactive. The driver will be alerted by slightvibrations in the steering wheel that the func-tion has been temporarily deactivated.
WARNING
Pilot Assist is deactivated automatically and resumes working without prior notice.
The color of the steering wheel symbol indicates thecurrent status of steeringassistance: • GREEN indicates that steering assistance is active
• GRAY (as shown in illustration) indicates thatsteering assistance is deactivated.

WARNING
When driver support follows another vehi- cle at speeds over approx. 30 km/h
(20 mph) and changes target vehicle –from a moving vehicle to a stationary one –driver support will ignore the stationary
vehicle and instead accelerate to the storedspeed. The driver must then intervene and apply the brakes.
Automatic standby mode when switching targets
Driver support disengages and goes into standby mode if:
your vehicle's speed goes under 5 km/h(3 mph) and driver support cannot deter-mine if the target vehicle is stationary or ifit is another object, e.g. a speed bump.
your vehicle's speed goes under 5 km/h(3 mph) and the vehicle ahead turns sothat driver support no longer has a vehicleto follow.

The driver should be aware that if condi- tions suddenly change when using PassingAssistance, the function may implement anundesired acceleration in certain condi-tions. Some situations should be avoided, e.g. if: the vehicle is approaching an exit in the same direction as passing would nor-mally occur
the vehicle ahead slows before yourvehicle has had time to switch to thepassing lane
traffic in the passing lane slows down
Situations of this type can be avoided by tem-porarily putting Adaptive Cruise Control or

City Safety™
City Safety 55
can alert the driver with light,
sound and pulsations in the brake pedal to help the driver detect pedestrians, cyclists, large animals and vehicles that appear sud-denly.
Location of the camera and radar sensor.
City Safety can help prevent a collision or lower the vehicle's speed at the point ofimpact. City Safety is an aid intended to assist the driver if a collision with a pedestrian, large ani-mal, cyclist or vehicle is imminent. City Safety can help the driver avoid a collision when e.g. driving in stop-and-go traffic, whenchanges in the traffic ahead and driver distrac-tion could lead to an incident. The function assists the driver by automati-cally applying the brakes if there is an immi-nent risk of a collision and the driver does notreact in time by braking and/or steering away. City Safety activates a brief, forceful braking in an attempt to stop your vehicle immediatelybehind the vehicle or object ahead. City Safety is activated in situations in which the driver should have applied the brakesmuch earlier, which means that the systemwill not be able to assist the driver in all situa-tions. City Safety is designed to be activated as late as possible to help avoid unnecessary inter-vention. Automatic braking will only be appliedafter or during a collision warning. Normally, the occupants of the vehicle will not be aware of City Safety except when the sys-tem intervenes when a collision is imminent.
WARNING
The function is supplementary driver support intended to facilitate drivingand help make it safer – it cannot han-dle all situations in all traffic, weatherand road conditions.
The driver is advised to read all sec-tions in the Owner's Manual about thisfunction to learn of its limitations, which the driver must be aware ofbefore using the function.
Driver support functions are not a sub-stitute for the driver's attention andjudgment. The driver is always respon-sible for ensuring the vehicle is drivenin a safe manner, at the appropriatespeed, with an appropriate distance toother vehicles, and in accordance withcurrent traffic rules and regulations.

Rear Collision Warning *63
The Rear Collision Warning 64
(RCW) function
can help the driver avoid rear-end collisions from vehicles approaching from behind.
The function can alert drivers of following vehi- cles of the risk of a collision by rapidly flashingthe turn signals. If, at a speed below 30 km/h (20 mph), the function detects that the vehicle is in dangerof being hit from behind, the seat belt tension-ers may tension the front seat belts. TheWhiplash Protection System will also be acti-vated in a collision. Immediately before a collision from behind, the function may also activate the brakes inorder to reduce the forward acceleration of thevehicle during the collision. However, thebrakes will only be applied if your vehicle isstationary. The brakes will be immediatelyreleased if the accelerator pedal is depressed. The function is automatically activated each time the engine is started.
