Driving
Choose the Pure drive mode to help mini-
mize electric power consumption.
Maintain a steady speed and a generous following distance to traffic ahead to mini-mize braking. This drive mode has thelowest power consumption.
Balance energy requirements using theaccelerator pedal. Use the indicator on theinstrument panel to see available electricpower and avoid starting the combustionengine unnecessarily. The electric motor ismore effective than the combustionengine, especially at low speeds.
When braking is necessary, brake gentlyusing the brake pedal. This will helprecharge the hybrid battery. A regenerativefunction is integrated in the brake pedaland can be augmented by the electricmotor's braking capacity when the gearselector is in mode
B.
Higher speeds increase energy consump-tion - air resistance increases with speed.
Activate the
Hold function in the Function
view at high speeds when traveling farther than is possible using the hybrid battery'scapacity.
Whenever possible, avoid using the
Charge function to charge the hybrid bat-
tery. Charging the battery using the com- bustion engine increases fuel consump- tion and carbon dioxide emissions.
In a cold climate, reduce heating of thewindshield/rear window, mirrors, seatsand the steering wheel.
Maintain the correct pressure in the tiresand check pressure regularly.
The type of tires used could affect energyconsumption - consult a retailer for adviceon suitable tires.
Remove unnecessary items from the vehi-cle - the heavier the load, the higher thefuel consumption.
Roof loads increase air resistance andincrease fuel consumption. Remove roofboxes, ski racks, etc. that are not in use.
Avoid driving with the windows open.
Do not keep the vehicle still on an upwardgradient by using the accelerator pedal.Use the brakes instead.

Factors affecting electric motor range
A number of factors affect the electric motor's driving range. The ability to achieve along driving range varies according to theoutside conditions and to how the vehicle isdriven.
The certified value for the distance that can be driven using the electric motor should not beconsidered an expected driving range. Theactual range is dependent on a number of fac-tors.
Factors affecting driving rangeThe driver can influence some factors affectingdriving range, but not all. The longest range is achieved under very favorable conditions when all factors positivelyinfluence range.

Emission controls
Three-way catalytic converter
Keep your engine properly tuned. Certain engine malfunctions, particularly involvingthe electrical, fuel or distributor ignitionsystems, may cause unusually high three-way catalytic converter temperatures. Donot continue to operate your vehicle if youdetect engine misfire, noticeable loss ofpower or other unusual operating condi-tions, such as engine overheating or back-firing. A properly tuned engine will helpavoid malfunctions that could damage thethree-way catalytic converter.
Do not park your vehicle over combustiblematerials, such as grass or leaves, whichcan come into contact with the hotexhaust system and cause such materialsto ignite under certain wind and weatherconditions.
Excessive starter cranking (in excess ofone minute), or an intermittently firing orflooded engine can cause three-way cata-lytic converter or exhaust system over-heating.
Remember that tampering or unauthor-ized modifications to the engine, theEngine Control Module, or the vehicle maybe illegal and can cause three-way cata-lytic converter or exhaust system over-heating. This includes: altering fuel injec- tion settings or components, alteringemission system components or locationor removing components, and/or repeateduse of leaded fuel.
NOTE
Unleaded fuel is required for vehicles with three-way catalytic converters.
Heated oxygen sensorsThe heated oxygen sensors monitor the oxy- gen content of the exhaust gases. Readings are fed into a control module that continuouslymonitors engine functions and controls fuelinjection. The ratio of fuel to air into the engineis continuously adjusted for efficient combus-tion to help reduce harmful emissions.

Overheating of engine and transmission
In certain driving conditions, such as driving in mountainous areas or hot weather, there isa risk of the engine or transmission overheat-ing, especially when carrying heavy loads.
Engine power may be temporarily limited.
Remove any auxiliary lights mounted in front of the grille when driving in hotweather.
If the temperature in the engine's coolingsystem becomes too high, a warning sym-bol will appear in the instrument panel along with the message

Calibrating the compass *
The globe is divided into 15 magnetic zones. The compass 21
should be calibrated if the
vehicle is driven from one zone to another.
1. Stop the vehicle in a large, open area away from steel constructions and high-voltage power lines.
2. Start the engine and switch off all electri- cal equipment (climate system, wipers,etc.) and make sure all doors are closed.
NOTE
Calibration may fail or not even be initiated if electrical equipment is not turned off.
3. Hold the button on the bottom of the rear-view mirror pressed for about 3 seconds (using e.g. a paper clip). The number of thecurrent magnetic zone is shown.

4. Press the button on the underside of themirror repeatedly until the desired mag- netic zone (
1–15) appears (see the map of

2. Peel off the speed limit sticker from the
side of the compressor. Affix the decal to a clearly visible location on the windshieldto remind the driver not to exceed thisspeed limit. Do not drive faster than80 km/h (50 mph) while using a tire thathas been temporarily repaired with the tiresealing system.
3. Make sure the switch is in the 0 (Off)
position and take out the electric cableand the hose.
4. Unscrew the orange cover on the com- pressor and unscrew the cap on the seal-ing compound bottle.
5. Screw the bottle onto the bottle holder as far as possible. The bottle and the bottle holder are equip- ped with catches to help prevent the seal-ing compound from leaking. Once the bot-tle is screwed into place into the bottleholder, it cannot be unscrewed. The bottle can only be removed by a workshop 17
.
WARNING
Do not unscrew the bottle. It is equipped with a catch to prevent leakage. 6. Unscrew the tire's valve cap and screw
the hose's valve connector as far as possi- ble onto the valve. Be sure the air release valve on the com- pressor's hose is completely closed.
7. Connect the electrical cable to the nearest 12 V outlet and start the vehicle.
NOTE
Make sure that none of the vehicle's other 12 V sockets are used while the compres-sor is running.
WARNING
Never leave children unattended in the vehicle while the engine is running.
WARNING
Inhaling exhaust fumes could lead to seri- ous injury. Never leave the engine runningin an enclosed space or a space withoutsufficient ventilation. 8. Start the compressor by moving the
switch to the I (On) position.
WARNING
Never stand next to a tire being inflated with the compressor. If cracks, bulges, etc.form on the tire, switch off the compressorimmediately. The vehicle should not bedriven. Call roadside assistance to have thevehicle towed to a workshop for inspec-tion/replacement of the tire. Volvo recom-mends an authorized workshop.
NOTE
When the compressor first starts, air pres- sure may temporarily increase up to 6 bar(88 psi) but should decrease again afterapproximately 30 seconds.
9. Inflate the tire for 7 minutes.
CAUTION
To help avoid overheating, the compressor should never be used for more than10 minutes at a time.

After using the tire sealing system, the vehicle should not be driven farther thanapproximately 200 km (120 miles).

The vehicle's original tires can be inflated using the compressor in the tire sealing sys-tem.
1. The compressor must be switched off. Make sure that the switch is in the 0 (Off)
position and take out the electrical cable and the hose.
2. Unscrew the tire's valve cap and screw the hose's valve connector as far as possi-ble onto the valve. Be sure the air release valve on the com- pressor's hose is completely closed.
3. Connect the electrical cable to the nearest 12 V outlet and start the vehicle.

the tire pressure decal on the driver's side door pillar. If the inflation pressure is toohigh, use the air release valve to releaseair.
6. Switch off the compressor. Remove the hose and the electrical cable.
7. Screw the valve cap back onto the tire.
NOTE
After inflating a tire, always replace the valve cap to help prevent valve damagecaused by gravel, dirt, etc.
Use plastic valve caps only. Metal capscould corrode and become difficult toremove.
NOTE

6. If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load
from your trailer will be transferred to your vehicle. Consult this manual to determinehow this reduces the available cargo andluggage load capacity of your vehicle.
WARNING
Exceeding the permissible axle weight, gross vehicle weight, or any otherweight rating limits can cause tire over-heating resulting in permanent defor-mation or catastrophic failure.
Do not use replacement tires withlower load carrying capacities than thetires that were original equipment onthe vehicle because this will lower thevehicle's GVW rating. Use only tireswith the correct load carrying capacity.Consult your Volvo retailer for informa-tion.
