City Safety helps provide assistance bystrengthening the driver's steering move-ments, but only if the driver has begun evasiveaction and the system detects that the driver'ssteering movements are not sufficient to avoida collision. The brake system is used simultaneously to further strengthen steering movements. The function also helps stabilize the vehicle after ithas passed the obstacle. City Safety steering assistance can detect:

pedestrians
large animals

Lane Keeping Aid limitations
In certain demanding driving conditions, Lane Keeping Aid (LKA 88
) may not be able to prop-
erly assist the driver. In these situations, it is recommended that the function be deacti-vated.
Examples of such situations include:
road work
winter driving conditions
poor road surfaces
a very sporty driving style
bad weather with reduced visibility
roads with indistinct or no lane markings
sharp edges or lines other than the lane's side markings
when speed-dependent power steeringwheel resistance is working at reducedpower – e.g. during cooling due to over-heating.
The function cannot detect barriers, railings orsimilar obstacles at the side of the lane.

The function uses the vehicle's camera and radar sensor, which has certain generallimitations.

Steering assistance during collision risks limitations
The function may have limited functionality in certain situations and not intervene, e.g.:
for smaller vehicles such as motorcycles
if more than half of your vehicle has moved into the adjacent lane
on roads/lanes with indistinct or no sidelane markings
outside the speed range 60-140 km/h(37-87 mph)
when speed-dependent power steeringwheel resistance is working at reducedpower – e.g. during cooling due to over-heating.
Functionality may also be reduced in other sit-uations, such as: road work
winter driving conditions
narrow roads
poor road surfaces
a very sporty driving style
bad weather with reduced visibility.
In these demanding driving conditions, the function may not be able to properly assist thedriver. In these situations, it is recommendedthat it is turned off.

3. Be prepared to stop the vehicle when
instructed to do so by a graphic and mes- sage in the center display. Follow theinstructions in the same way as for theparking procedure.
Note that the steering wheel can "spring"back when the procedure is completed andthe driver may need to turn the steering wheelback to the maximum position in order to pullout of the parking space. If the function determines that the driver can pull out of the parking space without any extramaneuvers, the function will be deactivated,even if it seems as though the vehicle is notcompletely out of the parking space.

WARNING
The parking sensors have dead/blind spots where objects cannot bedetected.
Pay particular attention to people andanimals near the vehicle.
Bear in mind that the front end of thevehicle may swing out towards oncom-ing traffic during the parking maneuver.
CAUTION
Objects situated higher than the detection area of the sensors are not included whenthe parking maneuver is calculated, whichcould cause the function to swing into theparking space too early. Such parkingspaces should be avoided for this reason.

CAUTION
Under certain circumstances, the function may not be able to find parking spaces –one reason may be that the sensors aredisrupted by external sound sources thatemit the same ultrasonic frequencies thatthe system works with. Examples of such sources include horns, wet tires on asphalt, pneumatic brakes,exhaust noise from motorcycles, etc.

General information about Twin Engine Twin Engine vehicles are driven just like any other vehicle, but certain functions differ froma vehicle powered exclusively by gasoline.The electric motor powers the vehicle primar-ily at low speeds; the gasoline engine is usedat higher speeds or during more active driv-ing.
The instrument panel displays Twin Engine- specific information - charging information,selected drive mode, distance to dischargedbattery and hybrid battery charge level. Different drive modes can be selected while driving, e.g. electric power only or, if morepower is needed, a combination of electric andgasoline power. The vehicle calculates a com-bination of driveability, driving experience,environmental impact and fuel economy forthe selected drive mode. In order to function optimally, the hybrid bat- tery (and its electrical drive systems) and thegasoline engine (and its drive systems) mustbe at the correct operating temperature. Bat-tery capacity can be considerably reduced ifthe battery is too cold or too hot. Precondi-tioning prepares the vehicle's drive systemsand passenger compartment before driving tohelp reduce both wear and energy consump-tion. It also helps increase the hybrid battery'srange.The hybrid battery which powers the electricmotor is recharged using the charging cable. Itcan also be recharged during light braking andthrough engine braking in gear position
B. The
combustion engine can also help recharge thehybrid battery.
Important
No electrical current
Keep in mind that if there is no electrical cur- rent to the vehicle, i.e. the ignition is switchedoff or the start battery is discharged, certainfunctions such as brakes, power steering, etc.will not work.
WARNING
If the vehicle does not have electrical cur- rent and both the electric motor and thegasoline engine are switched off, thebrakes cannot be used to stop the vehicle.
Towing not permitted
Never tow a Twin Engine vehicle behind another vehicle, as this could damage theelectric motor.
Exterior engine noise
Because there is no sound from the engine when only the electric motor is running, thevehicle is equipped with artificial exteriorbackground noise. This sound is intended tohelp warn children, pedestrians, cyclists, ani- mals, etc. outside the vehicle of the vehicle'sapproach.
High-voltage electrical current
WARNING
A number of electrical components in Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid vehicles use high-voltage current and can be extremely dan-gerous if handled incorrectly. These com-ponents and any orange wiring in the vehi-cle may only be handled by trained andqualified Volvo service technicians.
Do not touch anything that is not clearly described in this Owner's Manual.

Brake functions
The vehicle's brakes are used to reduce speed or prevent the vehicle from rolling.
In addition to the wheel brakes and parking brakes, the vehicle is also equipped with anumber of automatic brake assist functions.These systems provide assistance by e.g. thedriver not needing to depress the brake pedalat a traffic light or when starting up a hill. Depending on how the vehicle is equipped, the following brake assist functions may beincluded:

Brakes
The brake pedal is used to apply the vehicle's regular brakes, which are part of the brakesystem.
The vehicle is equipped with two brake cir- cuits. If one brake circuit is damaged, thebrake pedal will go down further whendepressed. More pressure will then berequired from the driver for normal brakingeffect.
WARNING
The power brakes only work when the electric motor or combustion engine is run-ning.
If the brake pedal is used when the engine is switched off, greater pressure must be appliedto brake the vehicle. In very hilly areas or when driving with a heavy load, gear position B can be used to augment
the brakes with engine braking.
Anti-lock brakesThe vehicle is equipped with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS 2
), which helps prevent
the wheels from locking and helps maintain steering control when braking. Vibrations maybe felt from the brake pedal when ABS isoperating, which is normal. After the vehicle is started, a brief test of theABS system is automatically performed whenthe driver releases the brake pedal. An addi-tional automatic test of the system may beperformed when the vehicle is traveling at alow speed. During the test, the brake pedalmay feel as though it is pulsating.
Light braking charges the hybrid
battery
When the brakes are applied lightly, the elec-tric motor braking function is used. This con-verts the vehicle's kinetic energy into electricalenergy, which is used to charge the hybridbattery. When the battery is being chargedwith the electric motor braking function, thiswill be indicated in the instrument panel.

CAUTION
Check the operating temperature of the transmission to help avoid damage to anyof the drive system components. If there isa risk of overheating, a warning symbol willappear in the instrument panel and a textmessage will be displayed. Follow the rec-ommendations given.

With an automatic transmission, a suitable gear is selected automatically according tocurrent speed and power requirements.
Selecting gearsThe gear selector is a shift-by-wire selector, where shifting is done electronically instead ofmechanically. This makes shifting easier andthe gear positions more distinct.

Starting and stopping the combustion engine in Twin Enginevehicles An advanced control system determines the distance that the vehicle can be driven on thecombustion engine, electric motor, or both atthe same time. When driving on only theelectric motor, the vehicle may automaticallystart the combustion engine due to outsidecircumstances, e.g. low ambient tempera-tures. This is completely normal. The com-bustion engine will also always start whenthe hybrid battery is nearly fully discharged.
Climate settings at low temperaturesAt low ambient temperatures, the combustion engine will sometimes start automatically tohelp achieve the desired passenger compart-ment temperature and air quality. The amountof time the combustion engine is running canbe affected by lowering the temperature

Using the electric motor in hot or cold

At very low or high ambient temperatures, the electric motor's driving range and power maybe reduced and affect how often the combus-tion engine automatically starts.
Emission control systemTo help ensure that the emission control sys-tem is as energy-efficient as possible, thecombustion engine will run for several minutesafter it is started. The amount of time the com-bustion engine needs to be used variesdepending on the temperature of the three-way catalytic converter.
