1-4. SRS Air Bags
Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Pre-
cautions
The front and side supplemental r estraint systems (SRS) include dif-
ferent types of air bags. Please verify the different types of air bags
which are equipped on your vehicl e by locating the “SRS AIRBAG”
location indicators. These indicators are visible in the area w here the
air bags are installed.
The air bags are installed in the following locations:
• The steering wheel hub (driver air bag)
• The front passenger dashboard (front passenger air bag)
• The outboard sides of the fron t seatbacks (side air bags)
• The front and rear window pilla rs, and the roof edge along both
sides (curtain air bags)
Vehicles with the Front Passenger Occupant Classification System
have a sensor which detects an impending roll-over accident.
The air bag supplemental restraint systems are designed to provide
supplemental protection in certa in situations so seat belts are always
important in the following ways:
Without seat belt usage, the ai r bags cannot provide adequate p rotec-
tion during an accident. Seat belt usag e is necessary to:
• Keep the occupant from being thr own into an inflating air bag.
• Reduce the possibility of injur ies during an accident that is not
designed for air bag inflati on, such as rear impact.
• Reduce the possibility of injuries in frontal, near frontal or side colli-
sions or roll-over accidents that are not severe enough to acti vate
the air bags.
• Reduce the possibility of being thrown from your vehicle.
• Reduce the possibility of injurie s to lower body and legs duri ng an
accident because the ai r bags provide no protection to these pa rts
of the body.
• Hold the driver in a position wh ich allows better control of the vehi-
cle.

751-4. SRS Air Bags
1
Essential Safety Equipment
◆Front Passenger Air Bag
The front passenger air bag is mounted in the front passenger
dashboard.
The inflation mechanism for the
front passenger air bag is the
same as the driver’s air bag, as
mentioned above.
For more details about air bag
deployment, refer to “SRS Air
Bag Deployment Criteria”
( P. 78).
In addition, the front passenger air bag is designed to only de ploy in
accordance with the total seated weight on the front passenger
seat. For details, refer to the front passenger occupant classi fica-
tion system ( P. 8 2 ) .
◆Side Air Bags
The side air bags are mounted in the outboard sides of the fron t
seatbacks.
When the air bag crash sensors
detect a side impact of greater
than moderate force, the sys-
tem inflates the side air bag
only on the side in which the
vehicle was hit. The side air
bag inflates quickly to reduce
injury to the driver or front pas-
senger’s chest caused by
directly hitting interior parts
such as a door or window.
For more details about air bag deployment, refer to “SRS Air Ba g
Deployment Criteria” ( P. 7 8 ) .
In addition, the front passenger side air bag is designed to on ly
deploy when the front passenger occupant classification sensor
detects a passenger sitting on the front passenger’s seat. For
details, refer to the front pas senger occupant classification s ystem
( P. 82).

2-1. Keys
The system operates only when the driver is in the vehicle or within
operational range while the key is being carried.
■Starting the Engine
● Starting the engine may be possible even if the key is outside of the vehicle
and extremely close to a door and window, however, always start the engine
from the driver’s seat.
If the vehicle is started and the key is not in the vehicle, the vehicle will not
restart after it is shut off and the ignition is switched to of f.
● The luggage compartment/trunk is out of the assured operational range,
however, if the key (smart key) is operable the engine will sta rt.
● The engine may not start if the key is placed in the following areas:
• Around the dashboard
• In the storage compartments such as the glove compartment
• On the rear parcel shelf (4-door)
If a key is left in the vehicle, the functions of the key left in the vehicle
are temporarily suspended to pr event theft of the vehicle.
To restore the functions, press the unlock button on the functi ons-sus-
pended key in the vehicle.

●When the battery power is low, or in places where there are hig h-intensity
radio waves or noise, the operational range may become narrower or the
system may not operate. For determining battery replacement, Re fer to
Keyless Entry System on P. 92.
● The system may not operate if you are too close to the windows or door
handles.
● If the key is left in the following areas and you leave the vehicle, the doors
may be locked depending on the radio wave conditions even if th e key is left
in the vehicle.
• Around the dashboard
• In the storage compartments such as the glove compartment or the cen- ter console
• On the rear parcel shelf (4–door)
• Next to a communication device such as a mobile phone

1372-8. Security System
2
Before Driving
■Arming
The system is armed when the
ignition is switched from ON to
off.
The security indicator light in
the combination meter flashes
every 2 seconds until the sys-
tem is disarmed.
■Disarming
The system is disarmed when the ignition is switched ON with the
correct programmed key. The security indicator light illuminates for
about 3 seconds and then turns off. If the engine does not star t with
the correct key, and the security indicator light remains illuminated
or flashing, try the following:
Make sure the key is within the operational range for signal tr ans-
mission. Switch the ignition of f, and then restart the engine. If the
engine does not start after 3 or more tries, contact your Toyota
dealer.
● The engine may not start and security indicator light may illum inate or flash
if the key is placed in an area where it is difficult for the system to detect the
signal, such as on the dashboard or in the glove compartment. M ove the
key to a location within the signal range, switch the ignition off, and then
restart the engine.
● Signals from a TV or radio station, or from a transceiver or mo bile telephone
could interfere with your immobilizer system. If you are using the proper key
and the engine fails to start, check the security indicator light.
● If the security indicator light flashes continuously while you are driving, do
not shut off the engine. Go to your Toyota dealer and have it checked. If the
engine is shut off while the indicator light is flashing, you w ill not be able to
restart it.
● Because the electronic codes are reset when the immobilizer sys tem is
repaired, the keys are needed. Make sure to bring all the keys to your Toy-
ota dealer so that they can be programmed.

When Driving
When the position lights are turned on with the ignition switched ON,
the brightness of the instrument panel illumination is dimmed.
When the position lights are turned on, the position lights ind icator light in
the combination meter turns on.
Refer to Headlights on P. 192.
The brightness of the instrument panel and dashboard illuminati ons
can be adjusted by rotating the knob.
Dim
The brightness decreases by rotat-
ing the knob to the left. A beep
sound will be heard when the knob
has been rotated to the maximum
dim position.
Bright
The brightness increases by rotat-
ing the knob to the right.
■
Function for cancelling illumination dimmer
The illumination dimmer can be canceled by rotating the dashboa rd
illumination knob to the right u ntil a beep sound is heard while the
combination meter is dimmed wi th the ignition switched ON. If the
combination meter’s visibility is reduced due to glare from sur -
rounding brightness, cancel the illumination dimmer.
● When the illumination dimmer is canceled, the combination meter cannot be
dimmed even if the position lights are turned on.
● When the illumination dimmer is canceled, the screen in the center display
switches to constant display of the daytime screen.
