2-4. Fuel and Emission
2
Before Driving
Fuel and Engine Exhaust Precautions
Vehicles with catalytic converters or oxygen sensors must use O NLY
UNLEADED FUEL, which will reduc e exhaust emissions and keep
spark plug fouling to a minimum.
To achieve maximum engine perfor mance, use the specified fuel.
*1: U.S. federal law requires that octane ratings be posted on gas station
pumps.
Fuel with a rating lower than 87 octane (91 RON) could cause th e
emission control system to lose e ffectiveness. It could also cause
engine knocking and serious engine damage.
Gasoline blended with oxygenates such as alcohol or ether com-
pounds are generally referred to as oxygenated fuels. The commo n
gasoline blend that can be used with your vehicle is ethanol bl ended
at no more than 10 %. Gasoline containing alcohol, such as etha nol or
methanol, may be marketed under the name “Gasohol”.
Vehicle damage and drivability problems resulting from the use of the
following may not be covered by the warranty. • Gasohol containing m ore than 10 % ethanol.
• Gasoline or gasohol containing methanol.
• Leaded fuel or leaded gasohol.
Fuel Requirements
FuelOctane Rating*1 (Anti-knock index)
Regular unleaded fuel87 [(R+M)/2 method] or above (91 RON or above)
NOTICE
●USE ONLY UNLEADED FUEL.
Leaded fuel is harmful to the catalytic converter and oxygen se nsors and
will lead to deterioration of the emission control system and o r failures.
● This vehicle can only use oxygenated fuels containing no more t han 10 %
ethanol by volume. Damage to the vehicle may occur when ethanol
exceeds this recommendation, or if the gasoline contains any me thanol.
Stop using gasohol of any kind if your vehicle engine is performing poorly.
● Never add fuel system additives other than a Toyota genuine pro duct, oth-
erwise the emission control system could be damaged. Consult yo ur Toy-
ota dealer for details.

2-4. Fuel and Emission
Fuel-Filler Lid and Cap
WARNING
■When removing the fuel-filler cap, loosen the cap slightly and wait for
any hissing to stop, then remove it
Fuel spray is dangerous. Fuel can burn skin and eyes and cause illness if
ingested. Fuel spray is released when there is pressure in the fuel tank and
the fuel-filler cap is removed too quickly.
■ Before refueling, stop the engine, and always keep sparks and f lames
away from the filler neck
Fuel vapor is dangerous. It could be ignited by sparks or flame s causing
serious burns and injuries.
Additionally, use of the incorrect fuel-filler cap or not using a fuel-filler cap
may result in a fuel leak, which could result in serious burns or death in an
accident.
■ Do not continue refueling after the fuel pump nozzle shuts off automat-
ically
Continuing to add fuel after the fuel pump nozzle has shut off automatically
is dangerous because overfilling the fuel tank may cause fuel o verflow or
leakage. Fuel overflow and leakage could damage the vehicle and if the fuel
ignites it could cause a fire and explosion resulting in serious injury or
death.
NOTICE
Always use only a genuine Toyota fuel-filler cap or an approved equivalent,
available at your Toyota dealer. The wrong cap can result in a serious mal-
function of the fuel and emission control systems.
It may also cause the check engine light in the combination met er to illumi-
nate.

1573-1. Start/Stop Engine

When Driving
■Push Button Start Positions
●The engine starts by pressing the push button start while depre ssing the
clutch pedal (manual transaxle) or the brake pedal (automatic t ransaxle). To
switch the ignition position, press the push button start without depressing
the pedal.
● Do not leave the ignition switched ON while the engine is not r unning. Doing
so could result in the battery going dead. If the ignition is l eft in ACC (For
automatic transaxle, the selector lever is in the P position, a nd the ignition is
in ACC), the ignition switches off automatically after about 25 minutes.
■ ACC (Accessory)
The keyless entry system does not function while the push butto n start has
been pressed to ACC, and the doors will not lock/unlock even if they have
been locked manually.
■ ON
When the push button start is pressed to ON, the sound of the f uel pump
motor operating near the fuel tank can be heard. This does not indicate an
abnormality.
WARNING
■ Before leaving the driver’s seat, set the parking brake, make s ure the
selector lever is in 1st gear or R (manual transaxle) or in P ( automatic
transaxle), and always switch the ignition off
Leaving the driver’s seat without setting the parking brake, sh ifting the
selector lever to 1st gear or R (manual transaxle) or to P (automatic tran-
saxle), and switching the ignition off is dangerous. Unexpected vehicle
movement could occur which could result in an accident.
In addition, if your intention is to leave the vehicle for even a short period, it
is important to switch the ignition off, as leaving it in anoth er position will dis-
able some of the vehicle’s security systems and run the battery down.

3-1. Start/Stop Engine
●Forced engine starting method:
If the KEY warning light (red) illuminates, or the push button start indicator
light (amber) flashes, this could indicate that the engine may not start using
the usual starting method. Have your vehicle inspected at your To y o t a
dealer as soon as possible. If this occurs, the engine can be f orce-started.
Press and hold the push button start until the engine starts. O ther proce-
dures necessary for starting the engine such as having the key in the cabin,
and depressing the clutch pedal (manual transaxle) or the brake pedal
(automatic transaxle) are required.
● When the engine is force-started, the KEY warning light (red) r emains illumi-
nated and the push button start indicator light (amber) remains flashing.
● Automatic transaxle:
When the selector lever is in the neutral (N) position, the KEY indicator light
(green) and the push button start indicator light (green) do no t illuminate.
● After pressing the push button start and before the engine star ts, the opera-
tion sound of the fuel pump motor from near the fuel tank can be heard,
however, this does not indicate a malfunction.
● Whether the engine is cold or warm, it should be started without the use of
the accelerator.
● If the engine does not start the first time, refer to Starting a Flooded Engine
under Emergency Starting. If the engine still does not start, have your vehi-
cle inspected by your Toyota dealer ( P. 482).
WARNING
■Radio waves from the key may affect medical devices such as pac e-
makers
Before using the key near people who use medical devices, ask t he medical
device manufacturer or your physician if radio waves from the key will affect
the device.
NOTICE
If the KEY warning light (red) illuminates, or the push button start indicator
light (amber) flashes, this could indicate a problem with the e ngine starting
system and the inability to start the engine or switch the igni tion to ACC or
ON. Have your vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer as soon a s possible.
