901-5. Theft deterrent system
The indicator light flashes after
the power switch has been turned
off to indicate that the system is
operating.
The indicator light stops flashing
after the power switch has been
turned to ACCESSORY or ON
mode to indicate that the system
has been canceled.
■System maintenance
The vehicle has a maintenance-free type immobilizer system.
■ Conditions that may cause the system to malfunction
●If the grip portion of the key is in contact with a metallic ob ject
● If the key is in close proximity to or touching a key to the security system
(key with a built-in transponder chip) of another vehicle
Immobilizer system
The vehicle’s keys ha ve built-in transponder chips that prevent
the hybrid system from starting if a key has not been previousl y
registered in the vehic le’s on-board computer.
Never leave the keys inside the vehicle when you leave the vehi-
cle.
This system is designed to help prevent vehicle theft but does
not guarantee absolute security against all vehicle thefts.

NOTICE
■To ensure the system operates correctly
Do not modify or remove the system. If modified or removed, the proper
operation of the system cannot be guaranteed.

Operation of each component
■Conditions affecting operation
The smart key system, wireless remote control and immobilizer s ystem use
weak radio waves. In the following situations, the communication between
the electronic key and the vehicle may be affected, preventing the smart key
system, wireless remote control and immobilizer system from operating prop-
erly. (Ways of coping: P. 504)
● When the electronic key battery is depleted
● Near a TV tower, electric power plant, gas station, radio stati on, large dis-
play, airport or other facility that generates strong radio wav es or electrical
noise
● When the electronic key is in contact with, or is covered by th e following
metallic objects
• Cards to which aluminum foil is attached
• Cigarette boxes that have aluminum foil inside
• Metallic wallets or bags
• Coins
• Hand warmers made of metal
• Media such as CDs and DVDs
● When other wireless keys (that emit radio waves) are being used nearby
● When carrying the electronic key together with the following devices that
emit radio waves
• Portable radio, cellular phone, cordless phone or other wirele ss commu-
nication devices
• Another vehicle’s electronic key, another electronic key of yo ur vehicle, or
a wireless key that emits radio waves
• Personal computers or personal digital assistants (PDAs)
• Digital audio players
• Portable game systems
● If window tint with a metallic content or metallic objects are attached to the
rear window
● When the electronic key is placed near a battery charger or ele ctronic
devices
● When the vehicle is parked in a pay parking spot where radio wa ves are
emitted.

Driving
■Auto power off function
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than 20 minut es or ON
mode (with the hybrid system not operating) for more than an ho ur with the
shift lever in P, the power switch will automatically turn off. However, this func-
tion cannot entirely prevent 12-volt battery discharge. Do not leave the vehi-
cle with the power switch in ACCESSORY or ON mode for long peri ods of
time when the hybrid system is not operating.
■ Sounds and vibrations sp ecific to a hybrid vehicle
P. 82
■ Electronic key battery depletion
P. 152
■ When the ambient temperature is low, such as during winter driv ing con-
ditions
● When starting the hybrid system, the flashing time of the “READY” indicator
may be long. Leave the vehicle as it is until the “READY” indic ator is steady
on, as steady means the vehicle is able to move.
● AXVH70 model vehicles
*: When the hybrid battery (traction battery) is
extremely cold (below approximately -22°F [-30°C]) under the in fluence of
the outside temperature, it may not be possible to start the hybrid system. In
this case, try to start the hybrid system again after the tempe rature of the
hybrid battery increases due to the outside temperature increas e etc.
*: The model code is indicated on the Certification Label. (P. 523)

■ Notes for the entry function
P. 168
■ If the hybrid system does not start
●The immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. ( P. 90)
Contact your Toyota dealer.
● Check that the shift lever is securely set in P. The hybrid sys tem may not
start if the shift lever is displaced out of P.
● If a message related to start-up is shown on the multi-informat ion display,
read the message and follow the instructions.
■ Steering lock
After turning the power switch off and opening and closing the doors, the
steering wheel will be locked due to the steering lock function . Operating the
power switch again automatically cancels the steering lock.
5027-2. Steps to take in an emergency
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
● The electronic key may not be functioning properly. (P. 505)
● There may not be sufficient f uel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle.
● There may be a mal function in the immobilizer system.
( P. 90)
● There may be a malfunction i n the steering lock system.
● The hybrid system may be malfunc tioning due to an electrical prob-
lem such as electronic key battery depletion or a blown fuse. H ow-
ever, depending on the type of malfunction, an interim measure is
available to start the hybrid system. ( P. 503)
● AXVH70 model
* only: The temperature of the hybrid battery (traction
battery) may be extremely low ( below approximately -22°F [-30°C]).
( P. 85, 211)
*:The model code is indicated on the Certification Label. ( P. 523)
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
● The 12-volt battery may be discharged. ( P. 507)
● The 12-volt battery terminal conn ections may be loose or corroded.
( P. 418)
If the hybrid system will not start
Reasons for the hybrid system not starting vary depending on
the situation. Check the followi ng and perform the appropriate
procedure:
The hybrid system will not start even though the correct starting
procedure is being followed. ( P. 2 0 8 )
The interior lights and headlights are dim, or the horn does no t
sound or sounds at a low volume.
