covered roads and when moving out of mud.But it is not suitable
for heavy off road use or
towing in rough conditions. It is particularly im
portant to note that 4-
wheel drive may not give sufficient hill climbing ability and engine braking on steep slopes. You should try to avoid driving onsteep slopes. Also, you must exercise caution when driving on sand and mud and when driving through water because sufficie
nt traction may not be
available in certain circumstances.Please avoid driving the vehicle through areas where the tires may get stuck in deep sand or mud.
When turning a sharp corner in “4WD LOCK” (Electronically controlled 4WD) or“GRAVEL” (S-AWC) position at low speed, a slight difference in
steering may be experi-
enced similar to feeling as if the brakes wereapplied. This is called tight corner braking and results from each of the four tires being at a different distance from the corner. The phe-nomenon is typical of 4-wheel drive vehicles. If this occurs, either straighten out the steer- ing wheel or change to another mode. Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD AUTO”, “4WD LOCK” (Electronically con-trolled 4WD) or “SNOW” (S-AWC) in accor- dance with the road conditions, and then gradually depress the ac
celerator pedal for a
smooth start.

ance between your vehi-
cle and the one ahead of you.  The driving posture should be more upright; adjust the seat to a good position for easy steering and pedal operati
on. Be sure to wear
the seat belt.  After driving on rough roads, check each part of the vehicle and wash it thoroughlywith water. Refer to the “Inspection and maintenance following rough road opera- tion” section and “Vehic

Check the depth of the water and the terrain before attempting to drive through it. Driveslowly to avoid creating excessive water splashing.

After operating the vehicle in rough road con- ditions, be sure to perform the followinginspection and maintenance procedures:
 Check that the vehicle has not been dam- aged by rocks, gravel, etc. Carefully wash the vehicle with water. Drive the vehicle slowly while lightly depressing the brake pedal in order to dryout the brakes. If the brakes still do not function properly, contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice as
soon as possible to
have the brakes checked.  Remove the inse
cts, dried grass, etc. clog-
ging the radiator core.  After driving through water, check the engine, transaxle and
differential oil. If
the oil or grease is milky or cloudy because of water c
ontamination, it must
be replaced with new oil.  Check the inside of the vehicle. If water entry is found, dry the carpet etc. Inspect the headlights. If water is in the headlight housing, have
it drained at an
authorized Mitsubishi
Motors dealer or a
repair facility of your choice.

Since the driving torque can be applied to the four wheels, the driving performance of the vehicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is greatly affected by the
condition of the tires.
Pay close attention to the tires. Install only the specified tires on all wheels. Refer to “Tires and wheels” onpage 11-7.  Be sure all four tire
s and wheels are the
same size
and type.
When it is necessary to replace any of the tires or wheels, replace all four.  All tires should be rotated before the wear difference between the
front and rear tires
is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wearbetween tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” on page 9-22.  Check the tire inflati
on pressure regularly.
CAUTIONNever drive through water that is deep enough to cover wheel hubs, axles or exhaust pipe. Do not change th
e selector lever posi-
tion while driving through water. Frequent driving through water can adversely affect the life
span of the vehicle;
consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair faci
lity of your choice and
take the necessary measures to prepare,inspect, and repair the vehicle. After driving through wa
ter, apply the brakes
to be sure they are functioning properly. If the brakes are wet and not functioning prop- erly, dry them out by
driving slowly while
lightly depressing the
brake pedal. Inspect
each part of the vehicle carefully.

weighing the loaded
trailer and then the tongue. The GAWRs are printed on the certification label which is riveted on the door sill on the driver’s side. Refer to “Vehicle labeling” on page 11-2. Choose a proper hitch and ball, and make sure it is installed at a height that is compati- ble with the trailer. Use a good equalizing hitch which uniformlydistributes the trailer tongue load throughout the frame.
A safety chain must al
ways be used between
the towing vehicle and the trailer. Leave suf-ficient slack in the chain for turns. The chain should cross under the trailer tongue to pre- vent the tongue from dropping to the groundin case it becomes damaged or separated. For correct safety chai

ishi Motors dealer.
Your vehicle will need service more often when you’re towing a trailer. Refer to “WAR-RANTY AND MAINTENANCE MAN- UAL”. Especially important in trailer operation are automatic transaxle fluid,engine oil, rear axle
oil, belt, c
ooling system
and brake system. Each
of these is covered in
this manual. For details, please refer to the “Vehicle care and maintenance” section.Check periodically to see that all hitch nuts and bolts are tight. Mitsubishi Motors recommends that any trailer having a total we
ight of 1,250 lb (567
kg) or more (2.4 liter models), 1,400 lb (635kg) or more (3.0 lite
r models) be equipped
with its own electric or surge-type brakes. If you choose electric br
akes, be sure they are
electrically actuated. Do not attempt to tapinto your vehicle’s hydraulic system. No mat- ter how successful it
may seem, any attempt
to attach trailer brakes to your vehicle’shydraulic system will lower braking effec- tiveness and create a potential hazard.
Gross axle weight rating (GAWR) Trailer hitches
WA R N I N G If you make any holes in the body of your vehicle for installing
a trailer hitch, be
sure to seal the holes later when you remove the hitch. If
you don’t seal them,
deadly carbon monoxide (CO) from yourexhaust can enter your vehicle. Refer to “Exhaust system” on page 9-26.

WA R N I N G When checking or servicing the inside of the engine compartment, be sure theengine is stopped and has had a chance tocool down. If you need to work
in the engine compart-
ment with the engine running, be espe- cially careful that your clothing, hair, etc. does not get caught in the cooling fans,drive belts, or other moving parts. After performing the maintenance work, make sure that no tools or cloths are left behind in the engine compartment. If they are left behind, a fire or damage tothe vehicle may occur. The cooling fans can turn on automati- cally even if the engine is not running. Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position to be safe while you work in theengine compartment. Do not smoke or allow open flames around fuel or the battery. The fumes are flamma- ble. Be extremely careful when working around the battery. It
contains poisonous
and corrosive sulfuric acid. Do not get under your ve
hicle while it is on
a jack.Always use properly rated automotive jack stands.

the converter. Normally, the catalyti
c converter does not
require maintenance. However, it is important to keep the engine properly tuned for the con- verter to continue to work properly. To reduce the possibili
ty of catalytic con-
verter damage:  Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY of the type of recommended in the “Fuelselection”.
 Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of gas could damagethe catalytic converter.  Do not try to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. If the battery isweak or run down, use jumper cables to properly start the engine.  Do not idle the engine with any spark plug wires disconnected or removed, such as when performing
diagnosti
c tests.
 Do not idle the engine
for a long time if it
is idling roughly or otherwise obviously malfunctioning. To prevent the catalytic converter from being damaged from unburned gas, do not race the engine when turning off the igni-tion switch.  Stop driving the vehicle if you think the performance is noticeably low, or theengine has a malfunction such as with the ignition, etc. If you are not able to stop driving immediately,
slow down and drive
for only a short time. Have your vehicle checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice as soon
as possible.
 In unusual situations involving major engine problems, a burning odor mayindicate severe a
nd abnormal catalytic
converter overheating. If this occurs, stop in a safe place, shut
the engine off and let
the vehicle cool. Once the engine is cool, immediately take your vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your
choice for service.

Use the engine hood release lever (located under the instrument panel near the driver’s door) to unlock the engine hood. Pull the lever toward you to release the engine hood latch.
