trailer and then the tongue. The GAWRs are printed on the certification label which is riveted on the door sill on the driver’s side. Refer to “Vehicle labeling” on page 11-2. Choose a proper hitch and ball, and make sure it is installed at a height that is compati- ble with the trailer. Use a good equalizing hitch which uniformlydistributes the trailer tongue load throughout the frame.
A safety chain must al
ways be used between
the towing vehicle and the trailer. Leave suf-ficient slack in the chain for turns. The chain should cross under the trailer tongue to pre- vent the tongue from dropping to the groundin case it becomes damaged or separated. For correct safety chai

Your vehicle will need service more often when you’re towing a trailer. Refer to “WAR-RANTY AND MAINTENANCE MAN- UAL”. Especially important in trailer operation are automatic transaxle fluid,engine oil, rear axle
oil, belt, c
ooling system
and brake system. Each
of these is covered in
this manual. For details, please refer to the “Vehicle care and maintenance” section.Check periodically to see that all hitch nuts and bolts are tight. Mitsubishi Motors recommends that any trailer having a total we
ight of 1,250 lb (567
kg) or more (2.4 liter models), 1,400 lb (635kg) or more (3.0 lite
r models) be equipped
with its own electric or surge-type brakes. If you choose electric br
akes, be sure they are
electrically actuated. Do not attempt to tapinto your vehicle’s hydraulic system. No mat- ter how successful it
may seem, any attempt
to attach trailer brakes to your vehicle’shydraulic system will lower braking effec- tiveness and create a potential hazard.
Gross axle weight rating (GAWR) Trailer hitches
WA R N I N G If you make any holes in the body of your vehicle for installing
a trailer hitch, be
sure to seal the holes later when you remove the hitch. If
you don’t seal them,
deadly carbon monoxide (CO) from yourexhaust can enter your vehicle. Refer to “Exhaust system” on page 9-26.

1. Park the vehicle on a safe, flat and level place. 2. Set the parking brake firmly.3. Move the selector
lever to the “P”
(PARK) position, and stop the engine. 4. Turn on the hazard warning lights and setup a warning sign, such as a warning tri- angle or flashing signal lamp, at an ade- quate distance from the vehicle, and haveall your passengers leave the vehicle. 5. Take out the tire repair kit. Make sure that the compressor switch isOFF.
6. Shake the tire sealant bottle well. 7. Take the valve cap (D) off the tire valve (E).
8. Unwind the bottle hose (F) from around the sealant bottle. 9. Pull out the compressor’s hose (G) from the bottom of the compressor and securely attach it to the valve (H) of the bottle byturning it clockwise until tight.
 Immediately wash clothes contaminated with tire sealant. The tire sealant may not beremoved from the clothes.NOTE
 Do not pull out an object, such as a nail or screw, that penetrat
es the punctured tire.

at the tire valve is
positioned away from the point where thetire touches the ground. If the valve is near the point where the tire touches the ground, the sealant may not enter the tire easily.  Check the tire sealant’
s expiration date regu-
larly, and be sure to
purchase a new one from
an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer before the expiration date.CAUTION
NOTE
 In cold conditions (w
hen the ambient tem-

10. Install the bottle onto the compressor. 11. Securely attach the bottle hose (F) to the
tire valve (E).
12. Pull out the compressor’s power cord (K),
insert the plug on the cord into the 12 Vpower outlet (L), and then turn the igni- tion switch or the operation mode to the ACC position. (Refer to “12 V power out-let” on page 5-221.) Turn ON the compressor switch (M) and inject all of the tire sealant and inflate thetire to the specified pressure. (Refer to “Tire inflation pressures” on page 9-20.) If there is a gap between the tire andwheel, push the tread area toward the cen- ter of the wheel to close the gap before running the compressor.
NOTE
 When installing the bottle, align the projec- tion (I) on the bottle with the indentation (J) in the compressor.
CAUTION If the bottle hose is not attached securely, the tire sealant will leak out from the tire valveand the tire may not inflate to the specifiedpressure.
WA R N I N G Do not place your hand or fingers between the tire and wheel while inflating the tire. Your hand or fingers may become caughtbetween the tire and wheel.CAUTION The supplied compressor is designed only for inflation of
your vehicle tires.
The compressor is designed to run on a vehi- cle’s 12 V power supply.
Do not connect it to
any other power source. The compressor is not waterproof. If you use it in rain, make sure wa
ter does not get on it.

How to change a tire

1. Place the tire on the center of the tire hanger, with the wheel surface facing upwards.
2. Lift up the tire hanger (A) and hook it on the hook (B).
3. With the wheel nut wrench, firmly tighten the tire hanger mounting bolt by turning itclockwise. 4. Install the cover over the tire hanger mounting bolt.
CAUTION Driving with an imprope
rly inflated tire can
cause an accident. If
you have no choice but
to drive with an under-inflated tire, keepyour speed down and avoid sudden steering or braking, if possible. Inflate the tire to the correct pressure as s
oon as possible. Refer to
“Tire inflation pressures” on page 9-20. After changing the tire
and driving the vehi-
cle about 620 miles (1,000 km), retighten the wheel nuts to make sure
that they have not
come loose. If the steering wheel vibrates when driving after changing the tire, have the tire checkedfor balance at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. Do not mix one type of tire with another or use a different size from the one listed. Thiswould cause ea
rly wear and poor handling.
To store the spare tire
(if so
equipped)
CAUTION Storing the tire with the wheel surface facing down may damage the wheel or tire hanger.If you find any damage
on a spare tire, do not
use the tire and contact an authorized Mit- subishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.CAUTION Make sure you hook the tire hanger in the proper position. If the tire hanger is nothooked properly, the hook could damage the vehicle body or the tire could fall off the vehicle while driving,
causing an accident.
CAUTIONConfirm that the tire ha
nger is firmly secured
after storing the spare
tire. If the tire hanger
is not secured, it could drop out while driv- ing, causing
an accident.
When hooking or unhooking the tire hanger, be sure to hold the tire hanger firmly to pre- vent it from dropping on your foot.

Release the lever and
lift the engine hood.
Support the engine hood with the hood prop. Insert the hood prop securely in the openingunder the hood marked with an arrow.
Unlatch the prop from the engine hood and put it back in its retainer. Slowly lower the engine hood about 8 inches (20 cm), then let it drop from its own weight.
WA R N I N G Never use the release lever to unlatch the engine hood while the
vehicle is in motion.
Do not drive your vehicle unless the engine hood is locked.NOTE
 To prevent damage to the engine hood and wipers, make sure the
wipers are at resting
position when you open the engine hood.
CAUTION Always insert the support prop into the hole specially made for it. Propping the engine hood at any other place
could cause the prop
to slip out and lead
to an accident.
The hood prop can fall out if the hood is lifted by a strong wind.
To close
CAUTION Be careful not to trap your hands or fingers when closing the engine hood. Make sure the engine hood is firmly closed before driving. If you drive without the engine hood com- pletely closed, it c
ould open up while driv-
ing.NOTE

passenger vehicles. Tread: portion of a tire that comes into contact with the road.  Tread rib: a tread se

ferentially around a tire.  Tread separation: pulling away of the tread from the tire carcass. Carcass: the tire structure, except tread and sidewall rubber which, when inflated, bears the load. Sidewall: portion of a tire between the tread and bead.  Section width: the line

the exteriors of the sidewalls of an inflated tire, excluding elevations due to labeling, decoration, or protective bands. Bead: the part of the tire that is made of steel wires, wrapped
or reinforced by ply
cords and that is shaped to fit the rim.
NOTE
 Check each battery terminal for corrosion. You can prevent further corrosion by wash-ing with a solution of baking soda and water.Grease the posts and cl
amps after cleaning or
tightening them.  Ensure the battery is securely installed and cannot be moved. Also
check each terminal
for tightness.  If you will not be driving your vehicle for a long period of time, remove the battery andstore it in a place where the battery fluid will not freeze. The battery only should be stored with a full charge.  Before cleaning the battery, tighten all the filler port caps to keep
dirt and moisture out.
