Trailer towing
Driving safety 6-15
6
You’ll need more passing distance up ahead when you’re towing a trailer. And, because you’re a good deal longer, you’ll need to gomuch farther beyond the passed vehicle before you can return to your lane. Hold the bottom of the steering wheel with one hand. Then, to move the trailer to the left, just move that hand to the left. To move the trailer to the right, move your hand to the right. Always back up sl
owly and, if possible,
have someone guide you. When you’re turning with a trailer, make wider than normal turns to help prevent the trailer from striking shoulders, curbs, roadsigns, trees or other objects.
Avoid jerky or sudden maneuvers. Signal well in advance. Towing a trailer puts additional burden on the engine and transaxle,
 which may cause over-
heating. Following ar
e some suggestions to
reduce overheating: When towing at high al
titudes, engine coolant
and automatic transaxle oil will overheat at a lower temperature than at normal altitudes. If you turn your engine off immediately aftertowing at high altitude
on steep uphill grades,
your vehicle may show
signs similar to over-
heating. To avoid this
, let the engine run
while parked (preferably on level ground) with the automatic transaxle in the “P” (PARK) position for a few minutes beforeturning the engine off.
If the engine coolant temperature indica- tor flashes on the information screen in the multi-information display or the engine power drops suddenly, refer to “Engine overheati
ng” on page 8-4.
If the warning display or warning display illuminates, re
fer to “Warning dis-
play” on page 5-72, 5-79.
Reduce speed and downshift before you start down a long or steep downgrade. If you don’t downshift, over using the brakes can cause reduced brake efficiency. You can tow in “D” (DRIVE) position. You may want to shift the selector lever to the 3rd or a lower position, under heavy loads or hilly conditions. Always place chocks or blocks under both the vehicle and trailer wheels when parking. Besure that the parking brake is firmly set and that the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position. Avoid parki
ng on a hill with a
trailer, but if it cannot be avoided, do so only after performing the following:
Passing Backing up Making turns
CAUTION Making sharp turns while towing a trailer could cause the
trailer to come in contact
with the vehicle. Your
 vehicle could be dam-
aged. Avoid making sharp turns while tow- ing a trailer.

N00836301230
If your vehicle breaks down on the road, move to the shoulder and turn on the hazard warning flashers. If there is no shoulder, orthe shoulder is not safe, drive in the right lane slowly with the hazard
 lights flashing, until
you come to a safe stopping place. Keep theflashers flashing. If the engine stops, there will be no power assist to the steering and brakes, making these difficult to use. The brake booster will not work, so the brakes will not grip well. The brake pedal will be harder to press than usual. Since there is no power steering assist, the steering wheel will be hard to turn.
Get help from your passengers, bystanders, etc. to push the vehicle
and move it to a safe
area.

If the operation mode
cannot be changed to
OFF, perform the following procedure. 1. Move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position, and then change the operation mode to OFF. 2. One of the other causes could be low bat-tery voltage. If this occurs, the keyless entry system, the F.A.S.T.-key operation and the steering wheel lock (if soequipped) will also
not operate. Contact
an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.

If the engine cannot be started because thebattery is weak or de
ad, you can start it with
the battery from anothe
r vehicle using jumper
cables.
1. Take off any metal jewelry such as watch bands or bracelets th
at might create an
accidental electrical contact. 2. Position the vehicles close enoughtogether so that the jumper cables can reach, but be sure the vehicles aren’t touching each other. 3. Set the parking brake firmly on your vehi- cle and move the selector lever into the“P” (PARK) position.

If the operation mode can- not be changed to OFF (vehicles equipped with the F.A.S.T.-key) Jump-starting the engine
WA R N I N G To reduce the risk of igniting flammable gas that may be emi
tted from the battery,
carefully read this section before jump-starting the vehicle. Do not try to start you
r vehicle by pushing
or towing. This can cause an accident resulting in serious
injury or death and
can damage the vehicle.NOTE
Do not use jumper cables if they have dam- age or corrosion.CAUTION Check the other vehicle.
 It must have a 12-
volt battery. If the other system isn’t 12-volt,both systems can be damaged.

to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery (B), a
nd then connect the
other end to the designated ground location of the vehicl
e with the discharged
battery (A) at the point farthest from thebattery.
NOTE
 Turn off all lights, heat
er, and other electrical
loads. This will avoid sparks and help saveboth batteries.WA R N I N G If the electrolyte flui
d is not visible, or
looks frozen, DO NOT ATTEMPT JUMP STARTING!!The battery might split open or explode if the temperature is below the freezing point or if it is not filled to the properlevel.
WA R N I N G Make sure that the jumper cables and your clothing are clear of the cooling fans and drive belts. Entanglement with the fans or belts can ca
use serious personal
injury.
NOTE
 Open the terminal co
ver before connecting
the jumper cable to the positive terminal ofthe battery.(Refer to “Battery” on page 9-14.) Use the proper cables suitable for the battery size. Otherwise heat damage
to the cables could
result.WA R N I N G Be sure to follow the proper order when connecting the batteries, of:
Make sure that the connection is made to the correct designated location (as shown in the illustration) properly. If the connection is directly made to the negative(-) terminal of the battery, the flammable gases from inside the battery might catch fire and explode, caus
ing personal injury.

Tire repair kit (if so equipped) 8-8 For emergencies
8
1. Park the vehicle on a safe, flat and level place. 2. Set the parking brake firmly.3. Move the selector
 lever to the “P”
(PARK) position, and stop the engine. 4. Turn on the hazard warning lights and setup a warning sign, such as a warning tri- angle or flashing signal lamp, at an ade- quate distance from the vehicle, and haveall your passengers leave the vehicle. 5. Take out the tire repair kit. Make sure that the compressor switch isOFF.
6. Shake the tire sealant bottle well. 7. Take the valve cap (D) off the tire valve (E).
8. Unwind the bottle hose (F) from around the sealant bottle. 9. Pull out the compressor’s hose (G) from the bottom of the compressor and securely attach it to the valve (H) of the bottle byturning it clockwise until tight.
Immediately wash clothes contaminated with tire sealant. The tire sealant may not beremoved from the clothes.NOTE
Do not pull out an object, such as a nail or screw, that penetrat
es the punctured tire.
 Move the vehicle so th
at the tire valve is
positioned away from the point where thetire touches the ground. If the valve is near the point where the tire touches the ground, the sealant may not enter the tire easily. Check the tire sealant’
s expiration date regu-
larly, and be sure to
 purchase a new one from
an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer before the expiration date.CAUTION
NOTE
 In cold conditions (w
hen the ambient tem-
perature is 32 °F {0 °C} or lower), thicken- ing of the tire sealant can make the tiresealant hard to squeeze out of the bottle. Warm the bottle betw
een your hands inside
the vehicle.

17. After driving for 10 minutes or 3 miles (5
km), park the vehicl
e in a safe place.
Remove the air compressor from the stowed position. Check the tire pressureusing the air pressure gauge on the com- pressor. If the tire pressure has not dropped, the emergency repair procedureis complete. Proceed to step 19. If the tire pressure is insufficient, inflate the tire to the specified pressure again anddrive the vehicle carefully without exceeding a speed of 50 mph (80 km/h). Before driving, make sure that the com-pressor is stowed.
18. After driving for 10 minutes or 3 miles (5
km) again, check the tire pressure usingthe air pressure gauge on the compressor. If the tire pressure has not dropped, the emergency repair procedure is complete. Before driving, make sure that the com- pressor is stowed. You must still not exceed a speed of 50 mph (80 km/h).Observe local speed limits.
19. Immediately drive with great care to an
authorized Mitsubishi
Motors dealer and
have the tire repa
ir/replacement per-
formed.

Before changing a tire,
first stop your vehicle
in a safe, flat location. 1. Park the vehicle on level and stable ground. 2. Set the parking brake firmly. 3. Move the selector lever to the “P”(PARK) position and turn the ignition switch (the engine switch) to the “LOCK” or “OFF” position.4. Turn on the hazard warning flashers and set up a warning sign, such as a warning triangle or flashing signal lamp, at an ade-quate distance from the vehicle, and have all your passengers
 leave the vehicle.
CAUTIONIf you sense any abnormality while driving, stop the vehicle and c
ontact an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Otherwise the tirepressure may drop before the emergency repair procedure is completed, rendering the vehicle unsafe to drive.CAUTION If the tire pressure is lower than the mini- mum permitted pressure (18 psi {130 kPa}), the tire cannot successf
ully be repaired with
the tire sealant. Do not drive the vehicle anyfurther. Contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.
NOTE
If the tire pressure has dropped below the specified level when you check it at the end of the repair procedure, do not drive the vehicle any further.
Contact an authorized
Mitsubishi Moto
rs dealer.
In cold conditions (when the ambient tem- perature is 32 °F {0 °C} or lower), the time and driving distance required until comple- tion of the repair can
become longer than in
warmer conditions, and the tire pressure may drop below the specified level even after you have inflated the tire the second time andsubsequently driven the vehicle. If this hap- pens, inflate the tire to the specified pressure once more, drive for approximately 10 min-utes or 3 miles (5 km), then check the tire pressure again. If the tire pressure has again dropped below the specified level, stop driv-ing the vehicle and contact an authorized Mitsubishi Moto
rs dealer.
NOTE
Please give the empt
y sealant bottle to an
authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or dis-pose of the sealant bot
tle according to regu-
lations for the disposal
 of chemical waste.

If your vehicle becomes
stuck in snow, sand,
or mud, it can often be moved by a rocking motion. Rock your vehicle back and forth to free it.Do not rev the engine or spin the wheels. Constant efforts to free a stuck vehicle can cause overheating and tr
ansaxle failure. Let
the engine idle for a few minutes to cool the transaxle before trying again. If your vehicle is still
stuck after several rock-
ing attempts, call for a commercial tow truck service.
 [For front-wheel driv
e vehicle equipped with
the active stability control (ASC)]If the vehicle is towed with the ignitionswitch in the “ON” pos
ition or the operation
mode in ON and only the front wheels raised off the ground (Type C), the ASC may oper-ate, resulting in an accident. When towing the vehicle with the front wheels raised, keep the ignition switch or
 the operation mode as
follows. [Except for vehicles equipped with the F. A . S . T. - k e y ]The ignition switch is in “LOCK”, “OFF” or “ACC” position. [Vehicles equipped with the F.A.S.T.-key]The operation mode is in OFF or ACC.
Towing a front-wheel drive vehi- cle with front wheels off the ground (Type C)
CAUTION
Operation under adverse driving conditions If your vehicle becomes stuck in sand, mud or snow
WA R N I N G When trying to rock
your vehicle out of a
stuck position, make sure that there are nopeople nearby. The
rocking motion can
make your vehicle suddenly lurch forward or backward, and inju
re any bystanders.
On wet roads
CAUTIONAvoid flooded roads. Water is often deeper than it looks, and you could be seriously hurtby driving into flood water. When driving in rain, on water-covered roads, or through a car
wash, water could get
into the brake discs and make them fail tem- porarily. In such cases, lightly press thebrake pedal to see if they are working prop- erly. If they are not, press the pedal lightly several times while driving to dry the brakepads or linings, then check them again. When driving in rain, a layer of water may form between the tires and the road surface (hydroplaning). This loosens your tires’ grip on the road, making it difficult to steer orbrake properly. When driving on a wet road:• Drive your vehicle at a safe speed.• Do not drive on worn tires.• Always keep the tires at the correct infla- tion pressures.

When driving on a road covered with snow or ice, use s
now tires. Tire chains
cannot be used on your vehicle. There may be state or local regulations aboutusing snow tires. Al
ways check the regu-
lations in your local area before using them. Refer to “Snow tires” on page 9-22and “Tire chains” on page 9-23. Drive slowly. Do not make sudden starts or stops, sharp turns, or slam on the brakes. Allow extra distance
 between your vehi-
cle and the vehicle in front of you, and avoid sudden braking. If a skid occurs when the accelerator pedal is depressed, take your foot off the pedal. Steer gently in the direction of the skid. Your vehicle is equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS). Hold the brake pedal down firmly and keep it depressed.Do not pump the brake pedal which will result in reduced braking performance. After parking on snowy or icy roads, it may be difficult to move your vehicle due to the brake being frozen. Depress the accelerator pedal little by little to movethe vehicle when safe to do so.
 Drive as slow as pos
sible when driving on
bumpy, rutted roads or over potholes.
N00860600031
In the event of a collision causing frontal air-bag deployment, the fuel pump shut-off sys-tem will activate to st
op fuel supply to the
engine.
On snowy or icy roads
CAUTION Do not depress the acce
lerator pedal rapidly.
The vehicle could start moving when itbreaks free from the
ice, possibly resulting in
an accident.
On a bumpy or rutted road
CAUTION Driving on bumpy, rutted roads or over pot- holes can damage th
e tires and wheels.
Wheels with low-profiles tires or under-inflated tires are especially at risk for dam- age.
Fuel Pump Shut-off System
WA R N I N G Before attempting to restart the engine after a collision, alw
ays inspect the ground
under the vehicle for leaking fuel. If a fuelleak is found or a fuel
 odor is detected, do
not restart the engine. Mitsubishi Motors recommends that your vehicle be inspected by
 an author
ized Mit-
subishi Motors dealer
 after any collision.
