N00520501814
This indicator is a part
of the onboard diag-
nostic (OBD) system which monitors the emissions, engine control system or auto- matic transaxle cont
rol system/continuously
variable transmission
(CVT) control system.
If a problem is detected in one of these sys- tems, this indicator illuminates or flashes. When the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or the operation mode is put in ON, this indicator
normally comes on and
goes off after the engine has started.
This indicator will come on if the fuel tank filler cap is not properly tightened. If thisindicator comes on and stays on after refuel- ing, stop the engine and check that the cap is properly tightened. (Turn the cap clockwiseuntil you hear clicking sounds.) If this indicator does not go off after several seconds or lights up whil
e driving, have the
system checked as s
oon as possible at an
authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

CAUTION When the warning light remains on or does not come on, there is the possibility that theparking brake cannot be operated orreleased. Immediately contact the nearest authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. When the warning light comes on during driving, immediately stop the vehi
cle in a safe place,
and contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. If you inevitably have to park, parkthe vehicle on level and stable ground, shift the selector lever in
“P” (PARK) position
and place chocks
or blocks.
Engine malfunction indicator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”)
CAUTION Driving for a long time with the engine mal- function indicator on
may cause more dam-
age to the emission control system. This could also affect fuel economy and drivabil-ity. If this indicator does not come on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” posi- tion or the operation mode
is put in ON, have
the system checked at
an authorized Mitsubi-
shi Motors dealer or a
repair facility of your
choice.
If the engine malfunction indicator comes on while the engine is running, avoid driving athigh speeds.During vehicle
operation with the indicator
on, the vehicle may not
accelerate when you
depress the accelerator pedal. When the vehicle is stat
ionary with the indi-
cator on, you must depr
ess the brake pedal
more firmly than usual since the engineidling speed is higher th
an usual and a vehi-
cle with an automatic transaxle or CVT has a stronger tendency to creep forward.NOTE
Do not disconnect the battery cable when the engine malfunction i
ndicator (“SERVICE
ENGINE SOON” or “Che
ck engine light”) is
on. The engine electronic control module storescritical OBD information (especially exhaust emission data), which may be lost if the bat- tery cable is disconnected while the enginemalfunction indicator is
on. This will make it
difficult to diagnose the cause of future prob- lems.

Oil pressure warning display
CAUTION If the vehicle is driven while the engine oil is low, or the oil level is normal but the warn- ing is displayed, th
e engine may overheat
and damage may result. If the warning is displayed while the engine is running, park your ve
hicle in a safe place
as soon as possible and check the engine oil level. If this warning display comes on when the engine oil level is pr
oper, have your vehicle
checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair fa
cility of your choice.
NOTE
The oil pressure wa
rning display does not
show the amount of oil. The oil level must bechecked using the dipstick.

NOTE
Do not leave the head
lights and ot
her lights
on for a long period of time when the engineis not running. The battery will run down. When it rains, or wh
en the vehicle has been
washed, the inside of the lens sometimes becomes foggy. This is the same as when window glass mists up
on a humid day, and
does not indicate a problem. When the light is switched on, the heat
will dry out the fog.
However, if water collects inside the light, have it checked by an
authorized Mitsubishi
Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

9. Start the engine in the vehicle providing the boost. Let the engine idle a few min- utes, then start the engine in the vehiclewith the discharged battery.
10. After the engine is
started, disconnect the
cables in the reverse order from the wayyou connected them.
If you drive your vehicl
e with a low battery
charge after the engine has been started byusing jumper cables, th
e engine may misfire.
This can cause the anti-lock braking system warning light to blink on
and off. This is only
due to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap- pens, fully charge the battery and ensure thecharging system is operating properly.
N00836501447
When the engine is overheating, the follow- ing warning display will appear on the infor- mation screen in the multi-information display. Also “ ” will blink. If these warnings are displayed: 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers. 2. With the engine st
ill running, carefully
raise the engine hood to vent the enginecompartment. 3. Check that the cooling fan is running. If the fan is not turn
ing, stop the engine
immediately and cont
act an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice for assistance. 4. If you see steam or spray coming from under the hood, turn off the engine.
When connecting the jumper cable, do not connect the positive (+) cable to the nega-tive (-) terminal. Sparks can make the bat-tery explode.
Charging the battery by using an external battery charger
WA R N I N G Always remove the
battery from your
vehicle when the battery is charged by an external battery charger. Keep sparks, cigarette
s, and flames away
from the battery because the battery could explode. Keep your work area well vented when charging or using
the battery in an
enclosed space. Remove all the caps before charging the battery.WA R N I N G
Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro- sive diluted sulfuric acid. If electrolytecomes in contact with your hands, eyes, clothes, or the pain
ted surface of your
vehicle, thoroughly flush with water. If electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush themimmediately and thoroughly with water, and get prompt medical attention. Always wear protecti
ve clothing and gog-
gles when working
near the battery.
Keep the battery out of
the reach of chil-
dren.

Brake fluid 9-14 Vehicle care and maintenance
9
N00938701327
Check the fluid level in the reservoir. The fluid level must be between the “MAX” and “MIN” marks on the reservoir. The fluid level falls slightly with wear of the brake pads, but this
does not indicate any
abnormality. If the fluid level falls se
aled tight in a short
length of time, it indi
cates leaks from the
brake system. If this occurs, have the vehicle checked by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
Use the recommended brake fluid conform- ing to DOT 3 or DOT 4. The reservoir cap must be tightly sealed to keep dirt and waterout.
N00939101940
The condition of the battery is very important for quick starting and to keep the vehicle’s electrical system working properly. Check thebattery regularly. If battery performance is suspect, have the battery and charging system tested by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. The electrolyte level
must be between the
limits shown on the outside
of the battery. Fill
it with distilled water
as needed. The inside of
the battery is divided into several compart- ments. Take the cap off of each compartment and fill to the mark.
Brake fluid To check the fluid level
Fluid type
WA R N I N G Take care in handling brake fluid as it is harmful to the eyes, may irritates yourskin and will damage
painted surfaces.
Wipe up spills immediately. If brake fluid gets on your hands or inyour eyes, flush imme
diately with clean
water. Follow up with a doctor as neces- sary.CAUTION Do not let any petrol
eum-based fluid touch,
mix with, or get into the brake fluid. This will damage the seals. Be careful when handling brake fluid. It can damage painted surfaces. Use only the listed brake fluid. Different brands of brake fluid have different addi- tives, and these can cause a chemical reac- tion. Do not mix brands of brake fluid. Keep the reservoir ta
nk cap closed to keep
the brake fluid from evaporating.
Battery
NOTE
After replacing the battery, the electronic control system data for the automatic trans-axle, etc., will be erased. As a result, shifting may be rough. Shifting will become smoother after severalchanges in speed.

Do not fill above the top line because a spill during driving could cause damage. The battery is weaker in cold temperatures. This has to do with it
s chemical and physical
properties and is why a very cold battery, especially one with a low charge, will have a hard time starting your vehicle. It is recommended th
at you have your battery
and charging system checked by an autho-rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice
before the start of cold
weather. If necessary, have it charged. Thiswill provide more reliab
le starting, and longer
battery life. To disconnect the battery cable, stop the engine. Disconne
ct the negative (-) terminal
first, then the positive
(+) terminal. To recon-
nect the battery, first
connect the positive (+)
terminal and then the negative (-) terminal, before starting the vehicle.During cold weather Disconnection and connection
NOTE
Open the terminal cover (A) before discon- necting or connecting the positive (+) termi- nal of the battery.
Loosen the nut (B) and then disconnect the battery cable from the positive (+) terminal.WA R N I N G Never disconnect the battery while the engine is running, or you could damage the vehicle’s electrical parts. Never short-circuit the battery. This could cause it to overheat and be damaged. Keep sparks, cigarette
s, and flames away
from the battery because the battery couldexplode. Electrolyte (battery ac
id) is made of corro-
sive diluted sulfuric acid. If it spills on nearby parts, it can crack, stain, or dis- color them. And if it gets on your skin orin your eyes, it can cause burns or blind- ness. Please observe the following han- dling instructions:NOTE
• If electrolyte gets
on plastic parts or
other nearby parts, wi
pe it off with a soft
cloth or chamois soak
ed in a solution of
water and neutral detergent then imme- diately rinse the affected parts with plenty of water.• If electrolyte gets on your hands orclothes, rinse thoroughly with water. Ifelectrolyte gets in your eyes, flush them with water immediat
ely and get immedi-
ate medical attention.
Open doors and wind
ows in any closed
space where you may be charging orworking with the battery. Always wear protecti
ve clothing and gog-
gles when working with the battery, or have a skilled automobi
le technician do it.
If you are quick-charging your battery, first disconnect the battery cables. In order to prevent a short-circuit, be sure to disconnect the
negative (-) terminal
first, and reconnect it last. If the electrolyte level is very low, have the battery checked at an
authorized Mitsubi-
shi Motors dealer or
a repair facility of
your choice. Battery posts, termin
als and related acces-
sories contain lead and lead compounds. Wash hands after handling.WA R N I N G
