If you drive your vehicl
e with a low battery
charge after the engine has been started byusing jumper cables, th
e engine may misfire.
This can cause the anti-lock braking system warning light to blink on
and off. This is only
due to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap- pens, fully charge the battery and ensure the charging system is operating properly.

If the high coolant temperature warning lightilluminates while the e
ngine is running, the
engine may be overhea
ting. If this happens:
1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers. 2. With the engine still running, carefully raise the engine hood to vent the enginecompartment. 3. Check that the cooling fan is running. If the fan is not turning, stop the engineimmediately and contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice for assistance.
4. If you see steam or spray coming from under the hood, turn off the engine. 5. If you do not see steam or spray coming from under the hood, leave the engine onuntil the high coolant
temperature warn-
ing light goes off. After the high coolant temperature warning light has gone off,you can start driving again. If the high coolant temperature warning light stays on, turn off the engine. 6. When you do not see any more steam or spray, open the hood. Look for obviousleaks, such as a split radiator hose. Be careful as components will be hot. Any leak source must be repaired.
Charging the battery by using an external battery charger
WA R N I N G Always remove the
battery from your
vehicle when the battery is charged by an external battery charger. Keep sparks, cigarette
s, and flames away
from the battery because the battery couldexplode. Keep your work area well vented when charging or using
the battery in an
enclosed space. Remove all the caps before charging the battery. Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro- sive diluted sulfuric acid. If electrolyte comes in contact with your hands, eyes,clothes, or the pain
ted surface of your
vehicle, thoroughly
flush with water. If
electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush themimmediately and thor
oughly with water,
and get prompt medical attention. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working near the battery. Keep the battery out of the reach of chil- dren.

Service precautions
WA R N I N G When checking or servicing the inside of the engine compartment, be sure the engine is stopped and has had a chance tocool down. If you need to work in the engine compart- ment with the engine running, be espe- cially careful that you
r clothing, hair, etc.
does not get caught in the fan, drive belts,or other moving parts.
 After performing the maintenance work, make sure that no tools or cloths are leftbehind in the engine compartment.If they are left behind, a fire or damage to the vehicle may occur. The fan can turn on automatically even if the engine is not running. Turn the igni- tion switch to the “OFF” position or putthe operation mode in OFF to be safe while you work in
the engine compart-
ment. Do not smoke or allow open flames around fuel or the battery. The fumes are flamma-ble. Be extremely careful when working around the battery. It
contains poisonous
and corrosive sulfuric acid. Do not get under your ve
hicle while it is on
a jack. Always use properly rated automotivejack stands. Handling your vehicle’s parts and materi- als in the wrong way can injure you. Ask an authorized Mitsub

The catalytic converter requires you to use unleaded fuel only. Leaded gasoline willdestroy the emission-control effectiveness of the converter. Normally, the
catalytic converter does not
require maintenance. Ho
wever, it is important
to keep the engine properly tuned for the con- verter to continue to work properly.
To reduce the possibili
ty of catalytic con-
verter damage:  Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY of the type of recommended in the “Fuel selection”.  Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of gas could damage the catalytic converter.  Do not try to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. If the battery is weak or run down, use jumper cables to properly start the engine. Do not idle the engine with any spark plug wires disconnected or
removed, such as
when performing diagnostic tests. Do not idle the engine for a long time if it is idling roughly or otherwise obviously malfunctioning. To prevent the catalytic converter from being damaged from unburned gas, do not race the engine when stopping the engine.

Never use the rear suspensions as a jack-ing point.

flat, hard surface. Before setting the jack, make sure there are no sand or pebblesunder the jack base.

Unlatch the prop from the engine hood and put it back in its retainer. Slowly lower the engi
ne hood approximately
8 inches (20 cm), then let it drop from its own weight.

It is normal for an engi
ne to use oil. You may
need to add oil betwee
n the recommended oil
change intervals. Before starting the engine,check the engine oil level. Refill if necessary. To check the oil level, remove the dipstick, wipe it off, and gently
reinsert it all the way.
Slowly pull the dipsti
ck straight out and
check the oil level by checking the upper sur- face of the dipstick. Th
e oil level must not go
above the line on the dipstick. If the level does not reach the line which shows the minimum amo
unt of oil required,
remove the oil filler cap on the engine valve cover, and fill to within the “Good” range.
To close
CAUTION Be careful not to trap your hands or fingers when closing the engine hood. Make sure the engine hood is firmly closed before driving.If you drive without the engine hood com- pletely closed, it c
ould open up while driv-
ing.
NOTE
 If this does not clos
e the engine hood prop-
erly, drop it again from a slightly higherposition.  Do not push down strongly on the engine hood. Depending on how strongly or whereyou push down, you could create a dent in the vehicle body.

must be between the
limits shown on the outside of the battery. Fill it with distilled water as needed. The inside ofthe battery is divided into several compart- ments. Take the cap off of each compartment and fill to the mark.Do not fill above the top line because a spill during driving could cause damage.

The battery is weaker in cold temperatures. This has to do with its chemical and physical properties and is why a very cold battery, especially one with a lo
w charge, will have a
hard time starting your vehicle. It is recommended that you have your battery and charging system checked by an autho-rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair

weather. If necessary, have it charged. Thiswill provide more reliab

WA R N I N G If the battery goes flat, be sure to check the battery electrolyte level before con-necting booster cables. After checking the battery electrolyte level, make sure the caps are fitted securely. If any of the caps has a loose fit, replace the battery.

water and neutral detergent then imme- diately rinse the affected parts withplenty of water.• If electrolyte gets on your hands orclothes, rinse thoroughly with water. If electrolyte gets in
your eyes, flush them
with water immediately and get immedi-ate medical attention.

space where you may be charging or working with the battery. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working with the battery, or have a skilled automobi

If you are quick-charging your battery, first disconnect the battery cables. In order to prevent a short-circuit, be sure to disconnect the negative (-) terminal first, and reconnect it last. Battery posts, termin

 Check each battery terminal for corrosion. You can stop more corrosion by washing with a solution of baking soda and water. Grease the posts and cl

each terminal for tightness.  If you will not be driv
ing your vehicle for a
long period of time, re
move the battery and
store it in a place where the battery fluid willnot freeze. The batter

The engine electronic control module that controls OBD functions stores various data (especially about th

This data will be erased if the battery cable is disconnected, which could make a rapid diagnosis difficult.
Do not disconnect the
battery cable when the engine malfunction indicator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine
light”) is ON.
