To activate the system, push the bottom of
the AXLE LOCK switch once to lock the rear
axle only (the “Rear Axle Lock Indicator
Light” will illuminate), push the bottom of
the switch again to lock the front axle (the
“Front Axle Lock Indicator Light” will illumi-
nate). When the rear axle is locked, pushing
the bottom of switch again will lock or unlock
the front axle.
NOTE:
The indicator lights will flash until the axles
are fully locked or unlocked.
To unlock the axles, push the top of the AXLE
LOCK switch.
Axle lock will disengage if the vehicle is taken
out of 4L (Low) range, or the ignition switch is
turned to the OFF position.
Electronic Sway Bar Disconnect — If
Equipped
Your vehicle may be equipped with an elec-
tronic disconnecting stabilizer/sway bar. This
system allows greater front suspension travel
in off-road situations.This system is controlled by the SWAY BAR
switch located on the instrument panel (to
the left of the steering column).
Push the SWAY BAR switch to activate the
system. Push the switch again to deactivate
the system. The “Sway Bar Indicator Light”
(located in the instrument cluster) will illumi-
nate when the bar is disconnected. The
“Sway Bar Indicator Light” will flash during
activation transition, or when activation con-ditions are not met. The stabilizer/sway bar
should remain in on-road mode during nor-
mal driving conditions.
WARNING!
Do not disconnect the stabilizer bar and
drive on hardsurfaced roads or at speeds
above 18 mph (29 km/h); you may lose
control of the vehicle, which could result
in serious injury. The front stabilizer bar
enhances vehicle stability and is neces-
sary for maintaining control of the vehicle.
The system monitors vehicle speed and
will attempt to reconnect the stabilizer bar
at speeds over 18 mph (29 km/h). This is
indicated by a flashing or solid “Sway Bar
Indicator Light.” Once vehicle speed is
reduced below 14 mph (22 km/h), the
system will once again attempt to return to
off-road mode.
To disconnect the stabilizer/sway bar, shift to
either 4H or 4L and push the SWAY BAR
switch to obtain the off-road position. Refer
to “Four-Wheel Drive Operation” in this sec-

tion for further information. The “Sway Bar
Indicator Light” will flash until the stabilizer/
sway bar has been fully disconnected.
NOTE:
The stabilizer/sway bar may be torque locked
due to left and right suspension height differ-
ences. This condition is due to driving sur-
face differences or vehicle loading. In order
for the stabilizer/sway bar to disconnect/
reconnect, the right and left halves of the bar
must be aligned. This alignment may require
that the vehicle be driven onto level ground or
rocked from side to side.
To return to on-road mode, push the SWAY
BAR switch again.
WARNING!
If the stabilizer/sway bar will not return to
on-road mode, the “Sway Bar Indicator
Light” will flash in the instrument cluster
and vehicle stability is greatly reduced. Do
not attempt to drive the vehicle over
18 mph (29 km/h). Driving faster than
18 mph (29 km/ h) may cause loss of
control of the vehicle, which could result

in serious injury. Contact your local autho-
rized dealer for assistance.
STOP/START SYSTEM —
DIESEL MODELS WITH
MANUAL TRANSMISSION
ONLY
The Stop/Start function is developed to save
fuel and reduce emissions. The system will
stop the engine automatically during a ve-
hicle stop if the required conditions are met.
Pressing the clutch pedal will automatically
restart the vehicle.
Automatic Mode
The Stop/Start feature is en-
abled after every normal cus-
tomer engine start. It will remain
in STOP/START NOT READY un-
til you drive forward with a ve-
hicle speed greater than 3 mph (5 km/h). Atthat time, the system will go into STOP/
START READY and if all other conditions are
met, can go into an STOP/START AUTO STOP
ACTIVE mode.
To Activate The STOP/START AUTO STOP ACTIVE
Mode, The Following Must Occur:
• The system must be in STOP/START
READY state. A STOP/START READY mes-
sage will be displayed in the instrument
cluster. Refer to “Instrument Cluster Dis-
play” in “Getting To Know Your Instrument
Panel” for further information.
• Vehicle speed must be less 3 mph (5 km/h).
• The gear selector must be in the NEUTRAL
position and the clutch pedal must be fully
released
The engine will shut down,the tachometer will
fall to the Stop/Start position,the STOP/START
AUTO STOP ACTIVE message will appear,
and the heater/air conditioning (HVAC) air
flow will be reduced.

Jack Usage Precautions
To complete the Use and Maintenance Hand-
book to which this supplement is attached,
given below are some instructions on the
proper use of the jack.
WARNING!
When using the crank, make sure it turns
freely without the risk of scraping hands
against the ground.
Even the moving parts of the jack, the
“worm screw” and joints can cause inju-
ries: avoid contact with them. Clean it
thoroughly if dirtied with grease.
CAUTION!
The jack is a tool designed exclusively for
changing a wheel, in case of a puncture or
damage to a tire of the vehicle on which it
is fitted or on vehicles of the same model.
Any other use, e.g. to jack up other vehicle
models or different things, is strictly pro-
hibited. Never use it to carry out mainte-
nance or repairs under the vehicle or to

change summer/winter wheels and vice
versa. Never go under the raised vehicle. If
any work under the vehicle is necessary,
contact the Fiat Service Network. Incor-
rect placing of the jack can cause the
vehicle to drop: use it only in the positions
indicated. Do not use the jack for loads
higher than that specified on the label.
Never start the engine with vehicle raised.
If the vehicle is raised more than neces-
sary, everything can become more un-
stable, with the risk of the vehicle drop-
ping violently. Therefore raise the vehicle
only as much as necessary for the wheel/
spare.
Maintenance
• Make sure grime does not build up on the
“worm screw.”
• Keep the “worm screw” lubricated.
• Never modify the jack.
Conditions Of Non-Use:
• Temperatures below −40°C.
• On sandy or muddy ground.• On uneven ground.
• On steep roads.
• In extreme weather conditions: thunder-
storms, typhoons, hurricanes, blizzards,
storms, etc.
JUMP STARTING
If your vehicle has a discharged battery, it can
be jump started using a set of jumper cables
and a battery in another vehicle, or by using a
portable battery booster pack. Jump starting
can be dangerous if done improperly, so
please follow the procedures in this section
carefully.
WARNING!
Do not attempt jump starting if the battery
is frozen. It could rupture or explode and
cause personal injury.

Do not use a portable battery booster pack
or any other booster source with a system

Push the "ESC Off" switch, to place the Elec-
tronic Stability Control (ESC) system in "Par-
tial Off" mode, before rocking the vehicle.
Refer to “Electronic Brake Control System”

push the "ESC Off" switch again to restore
"ESC On" mode.

Fast spinning tires can be dangerous.
Forces generated by excessive wheel
speeds may cause damage, or even failure,
of the axle and tires. A tire could explode
and injure someone. Do not spin your ve-

(48 km/h) or for longer than 30 seconds
continuously without stopping when you
are stuck and do not let anyone near a
spinning wheel, no matter what the speed.
CAUTION!
• When “rocking” a stuck vehicle by shift-
ing between DRIVE/SECOND GEAR and
REVERSE, do not spin the wheels faster
than 15 mph (24 km/h), or drivetrain
damage may result.
• Revving the engine or spinning the
wheels too fast may lead to transmission

overheating and failure. It can also dam-
age the tires. Do not spin the wheels
above 30 mph (48 km/h) while in gear
(no transmission shifting occurring).
TOWING A DISABLED
VEHICLE
This section describes procedures for towing
a disabled vehicle using a commercial towing
service. If the transmission and drivetrain are
operable, disabled vehicles may also be
towed as described under “Recreational Tow-
ing” in the “Starting And Operating” section.

Proper towing or lifting equipment is required
to prevent damage to your vehicle. Use only
tow bars and other equipment designed for
this purpose, following equipment manufac-
turer’s instructions. Use of safety chains is
mandatory. Attach a tow bar or other towing
device to main structural members of the
vehicle, not to bumpers or associated brack-
ets. State and local laws regarding vehicles
under tow must be observed.
If you must use the accessories (wipers, de-
frosters, etc.) while being towed, the ignition
must be in the ON/RUN position, not the ACC
position.
If the vehicle's battery is discharged, refer to
“Gear Selector Override” in this section for
instructions on shifting the automatic trans-
mission out of PARK for towing.CAUTION!
• Do not use sling type equipment when
towing. Vehicle damage may occur.
• When securing the vehicle to a flatbed
truck, do not attach to front or rear
suspension components. Damage to
your vehicle may result from improper
towing.
• If the vehicle being towed requires steer-
ing, the ignition switch must be in the
ACC or ON/RUN mode, not in the LOCK/
OFF mode.
Without The Ignition Key
Special care must be taken when the vehicle
is towed with the ignition in the LOCK posi-
tion. The only approved method of towing
without the ignition key is with a flatbed
truck. Proper towing equipment is necessary
to prevent damage to the vehicle.
Four–Wheel Drive Models
The manufacturer recommends towing with
all wheelsOFFthe ground. Acceptable meth-
ods are to tow the vehicle on a flatbed or with
one end of the vehicle raised and the oppo-
site end on a towing dolly.
If flatbed equipment is not available and the
transfer case is operable, the vehicle may be
towed (in the forward direction, withALL
wheels on the ground),IFthe transfer case is
inNEUTRAL(N) and the transmission is in
PARK(for automatic transmissions) or in gear
(NOTinNEUTRAL, for manual transmissions).
Refer to “Recreational Towing” in “Starting
And Operating” for detailed instructions.

• Front or rear wheel lifts must not be used
(if the remaining wheels are on the

Checking Oil Level — Gasoline Engine
To ensure proper lubrication of your vehicle's
engine, the engine oil must be maintained at
the correct level. The engine oil level should
be checked five minutes after a warmed up
engine has been shut off.
Checking the oil while the vehicle is on level
ground will improve the accuracy of the oil
level readings. Always maintain the oil level
within the SAFE zone on the dipstick. Adding
1 quart (0.95 liters) of oil when the reading is
at the bottom of the crosshatch zone will
result in a reading at the top of the cross-
hatch zone on these engines.
CAUTION!
Overfilling or underfilling the crankcase
will cause aeration or loss of oil pressure.
This could damage your engine.
Checking Oil Level — Diesel Engine
To assure proper engine lubrication, the en-
gine oil must be maintained at the correct
level. Check the oil level at regular intervals,
such as every fuel stop.For vehicles equipped with a Diesel Particu-
late Filter (DPF), it is acceptable to have an
oil level up to 3/8 inch (10 mm) above the
MAX line. Beyond 3/8 inch (10 mm) it is
recommended to change the oil.
The best time to check the engine oil level is
about five minutes after a fully warmed en-
gine is shut off.
Checking the oil while the vehicle is on level
ground will improve the accuracy of the oil
level readings. Maintain the oil level between
the MIN and MAX markings on the dipstick.
Adding 1 U.S. Quart (0.95 L) of oil when the
reading is at the MIN mark will result in a
MAX reading on these engines.
Cooling System
WARNING!
• You or others can be badly burned by hot
engine coolant (antifreeze) or steam
from your radiator. If you see or hear
steam coming from under the hood, do
not open the hood until the radiator has
had time to cool. Never open a cooling
WARNING!
system pressure cap when the radiator
or coolant bottle is hot.
• Keep hands, tools, clothing, and jewelry
away from the radiator cooling fan when
the hood is raised. The fan starts auto-
matically and may start at any time,
whether the engine is running or not.
• When working near the radiator cooling
fan, disconnect the fan motor lead or
turn the ignition to the OFF mode. The
fan is temperature controlled and can
start at any time the ignition is in the ON
mode.
Engine Coolant Checks
Check the engine coolant (antifreeze) protec-
tion every 12 months (before the onset of
freezing weather, where applicable). If the
engine coolant (antifreeze) is dirty or rusty in
appearance, the system should be drained,
flushed and refilled with fresh engine coolant
(antifreeze). Check the front of the A/C con-
denser (if equipped) or radiator for any accu-
mulation of bugs, leaves, etc. If dirty, clean

hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) that is an ozone-
friendly substance. The manufacturer recom-
mends that air conditioning service be per-
formed by an authorized dealer or other
service facilities using recovery and recycling
equipment.NOTE:
Use only manufacturer approved A/C system
PAG compressor oil and refrigerants.
Refrigerant Recovery And Recycling —
R–1234yf
R–1234yf Air Conditioning Refrigerant is a
hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) that is endorsed by
the Environmental Protection Agency and is
an ozone-friendly substance with a low
global-warming potential. The manufacturer
recommends that air conditioning service be
performed by an authorized dealer using re-
covery and recycling equipment.
NOTE:
Use only manufacturer approved A/C system
PAG compressor oil, and refrigerants.
Air Conditioning Filter Replacement (A/C Air
Filter)
WARNING!
Do not remove the cabin air filter while the
vehicle is running, or while the ignition is
in the ACC or ON/RUN mode. With the
cabin air filter removed and the blower
operating, the blower can contact hands
and may propel dirt and debris into your
eyes, resulting in personal injury.
The A/C air filter is located in the fresh air
inlet behind the glove compartment. Perform
the following procedure to replace the filter:
1. Open the glove compartment and remove
all contents.
2. Push in on the sides of the glove compart-
ment and lower the door.
