General
The
front
and
side
airbags
for
the
front
passenj
ger
can
be
deactivated
and
reactivated
using
the integrated
key
from
the
vehicle
key.
Deactivating
the
front
passenger
airbags
1.Insert
the
key
and
press
inwards
where
necj essary.2.While
the
key
is
pressed
inwards,
turn
it
to
the
OFF
position
as
far
as
it
will
go.
Once
the
stop
position
has
been
reached,
remove
the key.3.Make
sure
that
the
key
switch
is
in
the
end
position
so
that
the
airbags
are
deactivated.The
front
passenger
airbags
are
deactivated.
The
driver's
airbags
remain
active.
If
a
child
restraint
system
is
no
longer
fitted
in
the front
passenger
seat,
reactivate
the
front
passenj
ger
airbags
so
that
they
are
triggered
as
intended in
the
event
of
an
accident.

is
displayed
on
the
front passenger
airbag
indicator
lamp,
see
page
153.
Activating
the
front
passenger
airbags1.Insert
the
key
and
press
inwards
where

key

pedestrian
protection
Principle
The
active
pedestrian
protection
system
raises the
bonnet
if
the
vehicle's
front
end
collides
with
a
pedestrian.
Sensors
underneath
the
bumper
are
used
for
detection.
This
provides
additional
deformation
space
underneath
the
bonnet
for the
subsequent
head
impact.
Safety

The
system
may
trigger
inadvertently
if
contact is
made
with
individual
components
of
thehinges
and
bonnet
locks.
There

Pressure

Principle
The
system
monitors
the
tyre
inflation
pressure in
the
four
fitted
tyres.
The
system
warns
if
the
tyre
inflation
pressure
in
one
or
more
tyres
has
fallen
considerably.
General
Sensors
in
the
tyre
valves
measure
the
tyre
inflaj
tion
pressure
and,
depending
on
the
model,
the tyre
temperature.
To
operate
the
system,
also
follow
the
other
inj formation

notes
under
Tyre
inflation
presj
sure,
see
page
256.
Operating
requirements The
following
requirements
must
be
met
for
the
system,
otherwise
reliable
signalling
of
a
loss

WARNING
A
run-flat
tyre
which
has
low
tyre
inflation
presj sure
or
no
tyre
inflation
pressure
at
all
willchange
the
vehicle's
handling
characteristics,for
example
there
may
be
reduced
directional
stability
when
braking,
longer
braking
distances
and
different
self-steering
characteristics.
There
is
a
risk
of
accident.
Drive
with
care
and do
not
exceed
a
speed
of
80
km/h,

WARNING
Continuing
to
drive
with
a
flat
tyre
can
result
in
heavy
trailers
starting
to
slalom.
There
is
a

accidents

driving

trailer

of

km/h,

If

trailer
starts
to

The

driving
distance
varies

load

more
careful
driving

adopted,

On
a
journey
with
damaged
tyres,
handling

Adapt
your
driving

Avoid

steering

failure

or
loud
noises
during
the
journey
may
be
an
indication
that
the
tyre
has
finally
failed.
Reduce
your
speed
and
stop
the
vehicle.
Parts

the
tyre
could
detach,
which
might
lead

an

cident.

not
continue
driving,
but
instead

System
limits
Temperature
The
tyre
inflation
pressure
depends
on
the
temj
perature
of
the
tyre.
The
tyre
inflation
pressure
increases
as
the
tyre
temperature
increases,
for
example
during
drivj
ing
or
due
to
exposure
to
sunlight.

inflation
pressure
decreases
if
the
tyre

drops.
Through
this
behaviour,
a
warning
may
be

can

given
in
the
event
of
extreme, sudden

failure

external

RPA
Principle
The
system
identifies
a
loss
of
tyre
inflation
presj
sure
by
comparing
the
rotational
speeds
of
the
individual
wheels
during
the
journey.
If
a
tyre
loses
inflation
pressure,
its
diameter
changes.
This
in
turn
alters
the
rotational
speed
of
the
corresponding
wheel.
The
discrepancy
will be
detected
and
reported
as
a
flat
tyre.
The
system
does
not
measure
the
tyre
inflation
pressure
as
such.
Operating
requirements The
