Audi active lane assist
General information
Applies to: vehicles with Audi active lane assist
The active lane assist can detect lane marker
lines within the limits of the system. If you are
approaching a detected lane marker and it ap-
pears likely that you will leave the lane, the sys-
tem can warn you with corrective steering anda
steering wheel vibration, if necessary.
The system functions in the speed range of ap-
proximately 40 mph - 155 mph (65 km/h -
250 km/h).
Applies to: vehicles with Audi adaptive cruise control
If the conditions are met, traffic jam assist
switches on at speeds under approximately
40 mph (65 km/h) > page 141.

Display and warning
The availability, readiness to provide warnings,
and the warnings are indicated with indicator
lights. Active lane assist is ready to provide warn-
ings if an object is detected on at least one side
of the lane where your vehicle is traveling.

If the system is switched on but is not ready to
provide warnings, one of the following could be
the cause:
— There is no lane marker line
— The necessary lane marker lines have not been
detected (for example, in a construction zone
or because the lines are obstructed by snow,
dirt, water, or lighting)
— The speed is below the activation speed
— The lane is too narrow or too wide
— The curve is too narrow
— The driver's hands are not on the steering
wheel
— Visibility is obstructed by a rise or dip.
Steering intervention request
If no steering activity is detected or the steering
power from the system is not sufficient, the driv-
er steering intervention request will alert the
driver using audio and visual signals. Take over >

the steering and keep your hands on the steering
wheel so that you will be ready to steer at any
time. The system may no longer be ready to pro-
vide warnings after a short time, and it will only
become active again later.
If the driver takes over steering, active lane assist
will be switched off.
Behavior when a turn signal is active
Applies to: vehicles with side assist: The system
will not warn you if you activate a turn signal be-
fore crossing the lane marker line. In this case, it
assumes that you are changing lanes intentional-
ly.
Applies to: vehicles with side assist: If the turn
signal is activated, lane assist is ready, and a lane
change has been classified as critical by lane as-
sist due to vehicles traveling beside you or due to
approaching vehicles, then a noticeable correc-
tive steering movement will occur briefly before
exiting the lane. This will attempt to keep your
vehicle in the lane.

— The system warns the driver that the vehicle
is leaving the lane using corrective steering.
The driver is always responsible for keeping
the vehicle within the lane.
— Corrective steering may not occur at all in
certain situations, such as during heavy
braking. Always be ready to intervene.

— Always keep your hands on the steering
wheel so you can be ready to steer at any
time. The driver is always responsible for
adhering to the regulations applicable in
the country where the vehicle is being oper-
ated.
— The system does not provide any corrective
steering or steering wheel vibrations if it de-
tects that you are passing another vehicle.

— The image in the Driver assistance display
only appears if it was opened in the on-
board computer > page 15.

Adjusting Audi active lane assist
Applies to: vehicles with Audi active lane assist

You can adjust active lane assist individually. The
settings depend on the vehicle equipment.
> Applies to: MMI: Select on the home screen:
VEHICLE > Driver assistance. > Audi active
lane assist
Possible settings:
— Steering correction — With the Early setting,
steering correction occurs continuously in order
to help the driver keep the vehicle in the center
of the lane. In the Late setting, the steering
correction will only occur shortly before a wheel
crosses a detected lane marker line.

— Vibration warning - You can select if you would
also like to be warned using a vibration in the
steering wheel.

Certain settings are automatically stored and
assigned to the remote control key being
used.
Messages
Applies to: vehicles with Audi active lane assist

tion, the active lane assist functions may be un-
available or limited.
A message that indicates the cause and possible
solution may appear with some displays. The
weather conditions may be too poor or the cam-
era may be covered. Clean the area in front of the
camera > page 123 and try to turn on the sys-
tems again later.
If the malfunction remains, drive to an author-
ized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facili-
ty immediately to have the malfunction correct-
ed.
Audi pre sense
Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with Audi pre sense
Within the limits of the system, the Audi pre
sense functions can initiate measures in certain
driving situations to protect the vehicle occu-
pants and other road users. Depending on the ve-
hicle equipment, various Audi pre sense systems
may
be installed:
— Audi pre sense basic can react during emergen-
cy and dangerous braking maneuvers and un-
stable driving situations (such as oversteering
or understeering).
— Audi pre sense front can detect an impending
frontal collision with vehicles ahead and react
with warnings, braking interventions, and pre-
emptive safety measures for the vehicle occu-
pants.
— Audi pre sense city can detect an impending
collision with vehicles and pedestrians and re-

act with warnings, braking interventions, and
preemptive safety measures for the vehicle oc-
cupants.
— Audi pre sense rear monitors the rear traffic
behind your vehicle and can react to an impend-
ing rear impact.
— The swerve assist can help you to steer the ve-
hicle around an obstacle during an evasive ma-
neuver that is detected as critical.
— The turn assist can detect vehicles in the oppo-
site lane and react with braking maneuvers.

Depending on the vehicle speed and the vehicle
equipment, the following functions may be initi-
ated in certain situations:
— Visual and audio warnings
— Reversible tensioning of safety belts
— Closing the windows and panoramic glass roof
— Adjusting the seats

— Depending on the dangerous situation that
is detected and the selected Audi drive se-
lect* mode, all preemptive safety measures
may not be initiated under certain circum-
stances. Certain functions can be adjusted
or skipped if necessary.
— Audi pre sense may be restricted or unavail-
able under certain circumstances, for exam-
ple if:

— There are passengers with unfastened
safety belts
— It has only been several seconds since the
ignition was switched on The ndicator
light turns on.
— When driving in reverse
— The front passenger's airbag is switched
off

trians.
Audi pre sense city is active at speeds of approxi-
mately 6 mph (10 km/h) and higher.
It can warn about pedestrians at speeds up to ap-
proximately 50 mph (85 km/h) and vehicles at
speeds up to approximately 155 mph (250
km/h).
Automatic deceleration is possible at speeds up
to 50 mph (85 km/h).
Early warning/acute warning
The system can recognize various dangerous sit-
uations. The early warning occurs if:
—Avehicle driving ahead brakes suddenly
— Your own vehicle approaches a vehicle in front
of you that is traveling at a significantly slower
speed or that is stationary
— A pedestrian is standing in the lane or is mov-
ing into the lane
A warning tone and the message Audi pre
sense Bo or Audi pre sense ww (depending on ve-
hicle equipment) will warn you about the danger.
If there is an impending collision with vehicles,
there may also be an acute warning in the form
of sharp braking. You will also be warned by an
indicator in the instrument cluster display. When
this warning occurs, it may only be possible to
avoid a collision by swerving or braking strongly.
Automatic deceleration
If you do not react to the acute warning, Audi pre
sense can brake the vehicle to a full stop within
the limits of the system if the vehicle is traveling
at low speeds. This reduces the vehicle speed in
the event of a collision.
Automatic braking force increase
If Audi pre sense determines that you are not
braking strongly enough when a collision is immi-
nent, it can increase the braking force based on
the
situation.

— Audi pre sense city cannot overcome natural
physical laws. It is a system designed to as-
sist and it cannot prevent a collision in every
circumstance. The driver must always inter-
vene. The driver is always responsible for
braking at the correct time. Do not let the
increased safety provided tempt you into
taking risks. This could increase your risk of
a collision.
— Audi pre sense city does not react to certain
objects, such as animals, crossing or oncom-
ing vehicles, bars, railings, or railcars.
— Audi pre sense city may be limited or un-
available in curves or when it is dark.
— Loose objects can be thrown around the ve-
hicle interior during sudden driving or brak-
ing maneuvers, which increases the risk of
an accident. Store objects securely while
driving.

System functions may not be available if the
ESC is limited or switched off, or if there is a
malfunction.
Audi pre sense rear
Applies to: vehicles with Audi pre sense rear

Within the limits of the system, Audi pre sense
rear uses data from radar sensors in the rear area
of the vehicle and calculates the probability of a
rear-end collision with the vehicle behind you.
Audi pre sense preemptive safety measures can
be initiated if the risk of a collision with the vehi-
cle behind you is detected.

Applies to: vehicles with swerve assist
The swerve assist can help you to steer the vehi-
cle around an obstacle detected in a critical area.
If you avoid an obstacle after the acute warning,
then the swerve assist assists you by applying
slight steering adjustment to correct your steer-
ing wheel angle as long as you are actively steer-
ing. Swerve assist is available at speeds between
approximately 20 mph (30 km/h) and 90 mph
(150 km/h).

When your vehicle is turning
The turn assist can assist you with a braking in-
tervention when starting to drive or when driving
slowly, to reduce the risk of your vehicle colliding
with an oncoming vehicle when you are making a
left turn. The braking intervention causes your
vehicle to stay in its lane. The function is only
available when the turn signal is turned on and at
speeds up to maximum of 6 mph (10 km/h).

Set the warning time for the early warning to
Early at first. If this causes undesired early warn-
ings to appear, then set the warning time to Me-
dium. The Late warning time should only be set
in special circumstances.
@) Tips
— If Audi pre sense is switched off, it switches
on again automatically once the ignition is
switched on again.)
— Switch Audi pre sense off when you are not
using public streets, when loading the vehi-
cle onto a vehicle carrier, train, ship, or oth-
er type of transportation, or when towing >

General information
Side assist monitors the blind spot and traffic be-
hind your vehicle and provides assistance when
you are changing lanes. If the system detects an
object approaching and classifies it as critical, the
display @ in the exterior mirror on that side of
the vehicle will turn on,
Driving situations
The side assist warning is active at speeds above
approximately 9 mph (15 km/h) and can help in
situations such as the following:
@ Your vehicle is being passed. The faster an-
other vehicle approaches from behind, the
sooner the display in the outside mirror will
turn on.
@® There are vehicles traveling in the same direc-
tion as you in a lane adjacent to yours. The
display in the exterior mirror will turn on
when the detected object is in the “blind
spot”, at the latest.

@ You are slowly passing another vehicle. If the
difference in speed between the two vehicles
is less than 9 mph (15 km/h), the display in
the exterior mirror will turn on.
Information stage
If you do not activate a turn signal, the system
will inform you about objects classified as critical
by turning on the display in the respective exteri-
or mirror. The display remains dim in the infor-
mation stage so that you are not distracted while
looking forward.
Warning stage
Once you activate a turn signal, the system will
inform you about objects classified as critical by
turning on the display in the respective exterior
mirror.
Depending on vehicle equipment, the display
may also provide a warning when the turn signal
is not activated: if driver assist systems detect
that your vehicle is about to leave a lane, the dis-
play will blink to warn you about objects classi-
fied as critical. You can also be warned with cor-
rective steering > page 144, Audi active lane as-
sist.
System limitations
The system uses the data from the radar sensors
at the rear corners of the vehicle > page 123,
fig. 111. They are designed to detect the left and
right adjacent lanes when the road lanes are the
normal width. In some situations, the system
may react to vehicles in your own lane or lanes
that are not directly adjacent to yours, or to ob-
jects on the side of the road. In this case, the dis-
play will turn on even though there is no vehicle
in the critical area. These situations may include:
— Driving on the edge of your own lane
— Narrow lanes
— Curves
— High barriers on the side of the road

— The display may not appear on time when
vehicles are approaching or being passed
very quickly.
(i) Tips
— If the window glass in the driver's door or
front passenger's door has been tinted, the
display in the exterior mirror may be incor-
rect.

You can adjust the side assist to your preferences.
The settings depend on the vehicle equipment.

Possible settings:
The system can be switched on and off. If the sys-
tem is switched on, the displays in the exterior
mirrors will turn on briefly each time the ignition
is switched on.
Brightness - Change the brightness only when
side assist is switched on, so that the selected
setting can be checked in the exterior mirror dis-
plays. Adjust the brightness to a level where the
display will not interfere with your view ahead.
Because the display brightness automatically
adapts to the ambient light, it may have already
been adjusted to the highest or lowest setting
during the automatic adaptation.

— If you switch side assist on or off, the exit
warning will also switch on or off.
— Certain settings are automatically stored
and assigned to the remote control key be-
