IN AN EMERGENCY
98
❒ with a second cable, connect the
negative terminal (–) of the auxiliary
battery to an earthing point
Eon the
engine or the transmission of the car to
be started;
❒ start the engine; when the engine has
started, remove the leads, reversing the
order above.
If after a few attempts the engine does
not start, do not persist but contact a
dedicated Alfa Romeo Dealership.
IMPORTANT Do not connect the negative
terminals of the two batteries directly!
If the auxiliary battery is installed on
another car, check that there is no
accidental contact between metallic
parts of the two cars.
BUMP STARTING
Never, under any circumstances, jump
start the engine by pushing, towing or
coasting downhill.
FUEL CUT-OFF SYSTEM
OPERATION
This intervenes in the case of an impact
causing:
❒ the fuel supply cut-off with the engine
consequently switching off;
❒ automatic door lock release;
activation of all lights inside the car;
❒ the switching on of the hazard
warning lights.
The digital warning light and the
dedicated message on the display
indicate the intervention of the system.
Carefully check the vehicle for fuel leaks,
for instance in the engine compartment,
under the vehicle or near the tank area.
112)
111)This procedure must be performed
by qualified personnel as incorrect
actions may cause high-intensity
electrical discharge. Furthermore,
battery fluid is poisonous and corrosive:
avoid contact with skin and eyes. Keep
naked flames and lighted cigarettes away
from the battery and do not cause sparks.
IMPORTANT
13)Never use a fast battery charger to
start the engine as this could damage the
electronic systems and the ignition and
engine supply control units.
WARNING
99
After a collision, turn the ignition key to
STOP to prevent the battery from
running down.
To restore the correct operation of the
car, proceed as follows:
❒ bring the left exterior light control
stalk to central position (neutral);
❒ turn the ignition key to MAR;
❒ activate the right direction indicator;
❒ deactivate the right direction
indicator;
❒ activate the left direction indicator;
❒ deactivate the left direction indicator;
❒ activate the right direction indicator;
❒ deactivate the right direction
indicator;
❒ activate the left direction indicator;
❒ deactivate the left direction indicator;
❒ ignition key turned to the OFF
position;
❒ turn the ignition key to MAR.TOWING THE VEHICLE
The tow hook provided with the car is
located in the tool box in the luggage
compartment.
The tow hook attachment is only
available at the front end of the car.
ATTACHING THE TOW RING
Take tow hook 1 fig. 86 and tighten it
fully onto the threaded pin.
113) 114) 115)
86A0L0107
112)If, after an impact, you smell fuel or
notice leaks from the fuel system, do not
reactivate the system to avoid the risk of
fire.
IMPORTANT
IN AN EMERGENCY
100
113)Before towing, turn the ignition key
to the MAR position and then to STOP
without removing it. The steering column
will automatically lock when the key is
removed and the wheels cannot be
steered. Also check that the transmission
is in neutral (N).
114) When towing, remember that the
assistance of the brake servo is absent.
Consequently, more force is required at
the pedal in order to brake. Do not use
flexible cables when towing and avoid
jerky movements. Make sure not to
damage parts in contact with the car
while towing.
When towing the vehicle, you must
comply with all specific traffic
regulations and adopt an appropriate
driving behaviour.
Do not start the engine while towing the
car. Before tightening the ring, clean the
threaded housing thoroughly. Make sure
that the ring is fully fastened in the
housing before towing the vehicle.
IMPORTANT115) The tow hook should be used only
for emergencies on the road. You are
allowed to tow the vehicle for short
distances using an appropriate device in
accordance with the highway code (a rigid
bar), to move the vehicle on the road in
readiness for towing or transporting via a
breakdown vehicle.
Tow hooks MUST NOT be used to tow
vehicles off the road or where there are
obstacles and/or for towing operations
using cables or other non-rigid devices.
In compliance with the above conditions,
towing must take place with the two
vehicles (one towing, the other towed)
aligned as much as possible along the
same centre line.
SERVICING AND CARE
112
Lifting blade
If it is necessary to lift the blade from the
windscreen (e.g. in the event of snow or if
the blade needs replacement) proceed as
follows:
❒ by turning the ring nut 1 fig. 96 to
;
❒ turn the ignition key to MAR and then
to STOP;
❒ after turning the ignition key to STOP,
within 2 minutes move the right stalk
upwards, into unstable (“anti-panic”)
position, for at least half a second. The
windscreen wiper then executes part of a
stroke; at each command, approximately
1/3 of a normal wiper stroke is triggered.
❒ the previous operation can be
repeated up to 3 times, in order to move
the blade to the most suitable position;
❒ lift the blade from the windscreen and
proceed with the required operation;
96A0L0021
❒ lower the blade, bringing it into
contact with the windscreen;
❒ bring the blade to the initial rest
position, turning the ignition key to MAR.
20)
Replacing the front windscreen wiper
blade
Proceed as follows:
❒ lift the windscreen wiper blade,
following the instructions given
preciously;
❒ press tab 1 fig. 97 of the attachment
spring and remove the blade from the
arm;
❒ fit the new blade, inserting the tab in
the dedicated housing in the arm and
checking that it is locked;
AIR FILTER
For cleaner replacement, contact a
dedicated Alfa Romeo Dealership.
WINDSCREEN WIPER
It is advisable to replace the blade about
once a year.
125)
A few simple precautions can reduce the
possibility of damage to the blade:
❒ if the temperature falls below zero,
make sure that ice has not frozen the
rubber to the glass.
Use an antifreeze product to release it if
required;
❒ remove any snow from the glass;
❒ do not operate the windscreen wiper
on dry glass.
IMPORTANT Do not lift the arm of the
windscreen wiper when it is in its initial
rest position. Refer to the following
instructions to lift the windscreen wiper
blade correctly.
117
IMPORTANT The washing should take
place with the engine cold and the
ignition key in the STOP position.
After the washing operation, make sure
that the various protections (e.g. rubber
caps and guards) have not been removed
or damaged.
6)Detergents pollute water. Only wash
your vehicle in areas equipped to collect
and treat wastewater from this type of
activity.
WARNING
24)In order to preserve the aesthetic
appearance of the paint abrasive
products and/or polishes should not be
used for cleaning the car.
25)Avoid washing with rollers and/or
brushes in washing stations. Wash the
vehicle only by hand using neutral pH
detergents; dry it with a wet chamois
leather. Abrasive products and/or
polishes should not be used for cleaning
the vehicle. Bird droppings must be
washed off immediately and thoroughly
as the acid they contain is particularly
aggressive. Avoid (if at all possible)
parking the vehicle under trees; remove
vegetable resins immediately as, when
dried, it may only be possible to remove
them with abrasive products and/or
polishes, which is highly inadvisable as
they could alter the typical opaqueness of
the paint. Do not use pure windscreen
washer fluid for cleaning the front
windscreen and rear window; dilute it min.
50% with water. Only use pure screen
washer fluid when strictly necessary due
to outside temperature conditions.
IMPORTANT
INTERIOR
130) 131)
Periodically check the cleanliness of the
interiors, beneath the mats, also to
prevent damage to carbon parts.
To remove and reposition the mats in the
passenger compartment, proceed as
follows:
❒ undo the screws with folding ring 1
fig. 103, driver side and passenger side;
❒ separate the Velcro fabric strips 2 in
the front area under the mats, lifting
them from the floor.
Reposition the mats on the floor, making
sure that the holes at the back of the
mats coincide with the screw housings on
the floor.
