Twin Engine symbols and messagesin the instrument panel
A number of symbols and messages relating tothe Twin Engine may be displayed in the instru-
ment panel. They may also appear in combina-tion with general indicator and warning symbolsand disappear when the necessary action hasbeen taken.

The hybrid battery's charge level is too low for driving at high speeds. Charge the battery as soon aspossible.
Hybrid system
Harsh behavior at low speed, vehicleok to use
The hybrid system is not functioning properly. Contact a workshopA to have the system checked assoon as possible.

In some situations, such as in cold weather or ifthe hybrid battery's charge level is too low, thegasoline engine will start instead.
The vehicle should not be started with the charg-ing cable connected. However, if the cable can-not be pulled out or if the vehicle incorrectlydetects a cable that is not connected, the vehiclecan be started using an override procedure:
1.Press the brake pedal and turn the startknob clockwise.
2.Charge cable Remove before start willappear in the instrument panel.
3.Turn the start knob clockwise again.
4.Removed? Turn and hold start knob 7swill appear. Turn the knob clockwise and holdit for 7 seconds to start the vehicle.
Location of the backup reader in the tunnel console.
If the Vehicle key not found message is shownin the instrument panel at start, place the remotekey at the backup reader and then make a newstart attempt.

NOTE
When the remote key is placed in the backupreader, make sure that no other vehicle keys,metal objects or electronic devices (e.g. cellu-lar phones, tablets, laptops or chargers) are inthe backup reader. Multiple vehicle keys closeto each other in the backup reader can dis-rupt their functionality.
If Vehicle start System check, wait is dis-played in the instrument panel while attemptingto start the vehicle, wait until the message disap-pears and try again to start the vehicle.

CAUTION
If the engine has not responded after 3attempts – wait for 3 minutes before startinga new attempt. Starting capability increases ifthe starter battery is given time to recover.

NOTE
The vehicle cannot be started if the hybridbattery is discharged.
WARNING
Never remove the remote control key fromthe vehicle while driving.

WARNING
Always remove the remote key from thepassenger compartment when you leavethe vehicle and make sure the ignition isin mode 0.
Always put the gear selector in P andapply the parking brake before leavingthe vehicle. Never leave the vehicle unsu-pervised while the engine is running.
Always open the garage door fully andmake sure that ventilation is very goodbefore starting the engine in a garage.The exhaust fumes produced by the vehi-cle contain carbon monoxide, which isinvisible and odorless but very toxic.

NOTE
With a cold start, idling speed may be consid-erably higher than normal for certain enginetypes. This is done to get the emissions sys-tem up to normal operating temperature asquickly as possible, which minimizes exhaustemissions and protects the environment.

Brakes
The brake pedal is used to apply the vehicle'sregular brakes, which are part of the brake sys-tem.
The vehicle is equipped with two brake circuits. Ifone brake circuit is damaged, the brake pedal willgo down further when depressed. More pressurewill then be required from the driver for normalbraking effect.

WARNING
The power brakes only work when the electricmotor or combustion engine is running.
If the brake pedal is used when the engine isswitched off, greater pressure must be applied tobrake the vehicle.
In very hilly areas or when driving with a heavyload, gear position B can be used to augment thebrakes with engine braking.

Anti-lock brakes
The vehicle is equipped with an Anti-lock Braking
System (ABS2), which helps prevent the wheelsfrom locking and helps maintain steering controlwhen braking. Vibrations may be felt from thebrake pedal when ABS is operating, which is nor-mal.
After the vehicle is started, a brief test of theABS system is automatically performed when thedriver releases the brake pedal. An additionalautomatic test of the system may be performedwhen the vehicle is traveling at a low speed. Dur-ing the test, the brake pedal may feel as though itis pulsating.
Light braking charges the hybrid battery
When the brakes are applied lightly, the electricmotor braking function is used. This converts thevehicle's kinetic energy into electrical energy,which is used to charge the hybrid battery. Whenthe battery is being charged with the electricmotor braking function, this will be indicated inthe instrument panel.
When the battery is being charged with the electricmotor braking function, this will be indicated in theinstrument panel.
This function is active at speeds in the range of150-5 km/h (93-3 mph). When braking atspeeds outside of this range, or during harderbraking, the hydraulic braking system is used toaugment braking. This is indicated in the instru-ment panel with the pointer down in the red area.

WARNING
If the warning symbols for both brake faultand ABS fault are lit simultaneously, theremay be a fault in the brake system.
If the brake fluid reservoir level is normalwhen this occurs, drive carefully to thenearest workshop to have the brake sys-tem checked - an authorized Volvo work-shop is recommended.
If the brake fluid has fallen below the MINlevel in the brake fluid reservoir, the vehi-cle should not be driven until the brakefluid has been filled. The reason for thebrake fluid loss must be checked.

Brake Assist System
The brake enhancing system, (BAS3), helpsincrease braking force and can thereby reducebraking distance.
The system monitors the driver's braking habitsand increases braking force when necessary.Braking force can be increased up to the point atwhich the ABS intervenes. The function is deacti-vated when pressure on the brake pedal isdecreased.

Transmission
The transmission is part of the vehicle's driveline(power transmission) between the engine andthe drive wheels. The function of the transmis-sion is to change gears depending on speedand power needs.
The vehicle has an 8-speed automatic transmis-sion and an electric motor for rear-wheel drive.The number of gears allows the engine's torqueand power band to be effectively utilized. Two ofthe gears are overdrive gears that save fuel whendriving at a constant engine speed. The steeringwheel paddles* can be used to shift up or downmanually. The instrument panel shows the gearcurrently in use.

CAUTION
Check the operating temperature of thetransmission to help avoid damage to any ofthe drive system components. If there is a riskof overheating, a warning symbol will appearin the instrument panel and a text messagewill be displayed. Follow the recommenda-tions given.

Gear selector positions forautomatic transmissions
In vehicles with an automatic transmission, thesystem selects the optimal gear for the currentdriving conditions. The transmission also has amanual mode.
The instrument panel shows which gear is cur-rently in use:
P, R, N, D or B.
For manual shifting, the gear indicator in theinstrument panel displays the gear currentlybeing used.

Selecting gears
The gear selector is a shift-by-wire selector,where shifting is done electronically instead ofmechanically. This makes shifting easier and thegear positions more distinct.

Driving
Choose the Pure drive mode to help mini-mize electric power consumption.
Maintain a steady speed and a generous fol-lowing distance to traffic ahead to minimizebraking. This drive mode has the lowestpower consumption.
Balance energy requirements using theaccelerator pedal. Use the indicator on theinstrument panel to see available electricpower and avoid starting the combustionengine unnecessarily. The electric motor ismore effective than the combustion engine,especially at low speeds.
When braking is necessary, brake gentlyusing the brake pedal. This will help rechargethe hybrid battery. A regenerative function isintegrated in the brake pedal and can beaugmented by the electric motor's brakingcapacity when the gear selector is in modeB.
Higher speeds increase energy consumption- air resistance increases with speed.
Activate the Hold function in the Functionview at high speeds when traveling fartherthan is possible using the hybrid battery'scapacity.
Whenever possible, avoid using the Chargefunction to charge the hybrid battery. Charg-ing the battery using the combustion engine
increases fuel consumption and carbon diox-ide emissions.
In a cold climate, reduce heating of the wind-shield/rear window, mirrors, seats and thesteering wheel.
Maintain the correct pressure in the tires andcheck pressure regularly.
The type of tires used could affect energyconsumption - consult a retailer for advice onsuitable tires.
Remove unnecessary items from the vehicle- the heavier the load, the higher the fuelconsumption.
Roof loads increase air resistance andincrease fuel consumption. Remove roofboxes, ski racks, etc. that are not in use.
Avoid driving with the windows open.
Do not keep the vehicle still on an upwardgradient by using the accelerator pedal. Usethe brakes instead.

Factors affecting electric motorrange
A number of factors affect the electric motor'sdriving range. The ability to achieve a long driv-ing range varies according to the outside condi-tions and to how the vehicle is driven.
The certified value for the distance that can bedriven using the electric motor should not beconsidered an expected driving range. The actualrange is dependent on a number of factors.
Factors affecting driving range
The driver can influence some factors affectingdriving range, but not all.
The longest range is achieved under very favora-ble conditions when all factors positively influ-ence range.

Preparing for a long trip
It is important to have the vehicle's systems andequipment checked carefully before driving longdistances.
Check that
the engine is running properly and that fuelconsumption is normal
there are no leaks (fuel, oil or other fluid)
the brake pedal is functioning optimally
all lights are working ‒ adjust the headlightheight if the vehicle is carrying a heavy load
tire tread depth and air pressure are at cor-rect levels. Change to snow tires when driv-ing in areas where there is a risk of snowy oricy roads
the start battery is sufficiently charged
the wiper blades are in good condition

Winter driving
It is important to check the vehicle before drivingin cold/snowy conditions to make sure it can bedriven safely.
Before the cold season arrives:
Make sure the engine coolant contains 50%antifreeze. This mixture helps protect theengine from frost erosion down toapprox. -35 °C (-31 °F). Do not mix differenttypes of antifreeze as this could pose ahealth risk.
Keep the fuel tank well filled to prevent con-densation from forming.
Check the viscosity of the engine oil. Oil withlow viscosity (thinner oil) improves cold-weather starting and reduces fuel consump-tion when driving with a cold engine.
CAUTION
Low-viscosity oil should not be used with harddriving or in hot weather.
Check the condition and charge level of thestart battery. Cold weather places greaterdemands on the start battery and reduces itscapacity.
Use washer fluid containing antifreeze tohelp prevent ice from forming in the washerfluid reservoir.
Slippery driving conditions
For optimal traction and roadholding, Volvo rec-ommends using snow tires on all wheels when-ever there is a risk of snow or ice on the road.

NOTE
Certain countries require use of winter tiresby law. Not all countries permit the use ofstudded tires.
Practice driving on slippery surfaces under con-trolled conditions to learn how the vehicle reacts.

Driving through standing water
It may be necessary to drive the vehicle throughstanding water, e.g. deep puddles or flooding onthe road. This must be done with great caution.
To help prevent damage to the vehicle when driv-ing through water:
Do not drive in water higher than the floor ofthe vehicle. If possible, check the depth ofthe water at its deepest point before drivingthrough it. Be particularly careful when driv-ing through flowing water.
Do not drive faster than walking speed.
Do not stop the vehicle in the water. Drivecarefully forward or back the vehicle out ofthe water.
Remember that waves created by passingvehicles could cause the water level to riseabove the vehicle's floor level.
Avoid driving through salt water to help avoidthe risk of corrosion.

CAUTION
Parts of the vehicle (e.g. engine, transmission,driveline, electrical components, etc.) can bedamaged if the vehicle is driven through waterhigher than its floor level. Damage to anycomponents caused by flooding, vapor lock orinsufficient oil is not covered under warranty.
If the engine stalls while the vehicle is inwater, do not attempt to restart it. Have thevehicle towed on the bed of a tow truck to aworkshop - an authorized Volvo workshop isrecommended.

CAUTION
Because it can be difficult to determine thewater depth, avoid driving through standing orrunning water.
When you have passed the water, press lightly onthe brake pedal and check that the brakes arefunctioning properly. Water, mud, slush, etc. canmake the brake linings slippery, resulting indelayed braking effect.
If the vehicle is equipped with a trailer couplingcontact, clean the contact after driving in water ormud.

Opening/closing the fuel filler door
