Plug-in hybrid vehicle driving tips
◆Using EV mode and HV mode effectively
Primarily using EV mode when driving in cities and using HV mod e
when driving on highways (or freeways) can help conserve fuel a nd
electricity. ( P. 8 8 )
◆Using Eco drive mode
When using Eco drive mode, the torque corresponding to the acce l-
erator pedal depression amount can be generated more smoothly
than it is in normal conditions. In addition, the operation of the air
conditioning system (heating/coo ling) will be minimized, improving
fuel and electricity economy. ( P. 415)
◆Use of Hybrid System Indicator
Eco-friendly driving is possible by keeping the Hybrid System I ndi-
cator within Eco area. ( P. 218)
◆Shift position operation
Shift the shift position to D when stopped at a traffic light, or driving
in heavy traffic etc. Shift the shift position to P when parkin g. When
using the N, there is no positiv e effect on fuel consumption. In the
N, the gasoline engine operates but electricity cannot be gener -
ated. Also, when using the air conditioning system, etc., the h ybrid
battery (traction batt ery) power is consumed.
For economical and ecological dri ving, pay attention to the fol-
lowing points:

◆Accelerator pedal/brake pedal operation
●Drive your vehicle smoothly. Avoid abrupt acceleration and
deceleration. Gradual accelerat ion and deceleration will make
more effective use of the electric motor (traction motor) witho ut
having to use gaso line engine power.
● Avoid repeated acceleration. Repeated acceleration consumes
hybrid battery (tracti on battery) power, resulting in poor fuel con-
sumption. Battery power can be restored by driving with the
accelerator pedal slightly released.
◆When braking
Make sure to operate the brakes gently and a timely manner. A
greater amount of electrical energy can be regenerated when slow-
ing down.
◆Delays
Repeated acceleration and deceleration, as well as long waits a t
traffic lights, will lead to high fuel and electricity consumption.
Check traffic reports before leav ing and avoid delays as much a s
possible. When driving in a traffic jam, gently release the brake
pedal to allow the vehicle to mov e forward slightly while avoiding
overuse of the accelerator pedal. Doing so can help control exces-
sive electricity and fuel consumption.
◆Highway driving
● Control and maintain the vehicle at a constant speed. Before
stopping at a toll booth or similar, allow plenty of time to re lease
the accelerator and gently apply the brakes. A greater amount o f
electrical energy can be regenerated when slowing down.
● Electricity consumption will in crease significantly when drivin g at
high speeds in EV mode. If there will be a long distance to the
next external charging point after leaving a freeway, it is rec om-
mended to drive in HV mode while on the freeway and change to
EV mode after leaving the freeway.

◆Air conditioning
●Turn the “A/C” switch (
*1 • *2) off when it is
not needed. Doing so can help reduce excessive electricity and
fuel consumption.
In summer: When the ambient temperature is high, use the recir-
culated air mode. Doing so will help to reduce the burden on th e
air conditioning system and reduc e electricity and fuel consump-
tion as well.
In winter: Avoid excessive and unnecessary use of the heater.
Usage of the heated steering w heel (if equipped) and seat heat-
ers is effective. ( P. 5 2 2 )
● Using the Remote Air Conditioning System ( P. 518) while the
charging cable is connected to the vehicle can reduce electrici ty
consumption immediately after st arting off by operating air condi-
tioning mainly using electricity from an external power source.
● When setting the timer, selecting the start time setting mode a nd
setting “Climate Prep” to “On” c an reduce electricity consumption
immediately after starting off by operating air conditioning be fore
charging is completed. ( P. 154)

◆Checking tire inflation pressure
Make sure to check the tire inflation pressure frequently. If t here is
improper tire inflation pressur e in the tires, the EV driving range will
become shorter, and fuel consumption when in HV mode will
increase.
Also, as snow tires can cause large amounts of friction, their use on
dry roads can lead t o increased fuel and electricity consumptio n.
◆Luggage
Carrying heavy luggage will lead to poor fuel economy. Avoid carry-
ing unnecessary luggage. Installing a large roof rack will also cause
poor fuel economy.
◆Warming up before driving
Since the gasoline engine starts up and cuts out automatically,
warming up is not necessary.

EV driving range
The value displayed on the multi-information display etc. (P. 207,
223, 230, 247) is estimated fro m the following information.
● The amount of hybrid battery (tr action battery) charge currently
remaining
● The electricity consumption (the estimated distance that can be
driven in EV mode per unit of electrical energy) based on the
recorded value
● Past air conditioning system el ectricity consumption amount
The electricity consumption va ries depending on how the vehicle is
driven. The vehicle automatically records the electricity consumption
when being charged and uses the el ectricity consumption for estimat-
ing the EV driving range. Therefor e, the EV driving range displayed
when the hybrid battery (traction battery) is fully charged may differ
from the previous EV driving range depending on how the vehicle was
driven.
The EV driving range may change significantly with each chargin g
until the electricity consumptio n based on the recorded value i s stable
(for approximately the first mont h or two). However, this does not indi-
cate a malfunction.
When the air conditioning system is turned on, the EV driving r ange
(with using the air conditioning system) is estimated based on the past
air conditioning electricity consumption amount considering tha t the
electricity consumpt ion may become higher.
The EV driving range displayed on the multi-information display
etc. shows the reference distan ce that EV driving (driving using
only the electric motor) is possi ble, and the actual distance that
can be driven may differ from that displayed.
Even if the EV driving range is displayed, EV driving may be can-
celed and both gasoline engine a nd electric motor are used depend-
ing on the situation. ( P. 9 3 )

Charging methods
◆Charging from an external power source (P. 143)
This is a charging method used when charging from an AC outlet
(120 V) with the charging cable equipped to the vehicle or char ging
at a public charging station.
The charging start time (or departure time) and day can be set to carry
out charging using the timer at the desired date and time. ( P. 154)
◆Using the hybrid battery (traction battery) charge mode
( P. 87)
The plug-in hybrid system can be switched to hybrid battery (trac-
tion battery) charge mode to charge the hybrid battery (tractio n bat-
tery) using electric ity generated by gas oline engine operation.
The maximum charge amount in the hybrid battery (traction battery)
charge mode is approximately 80% of the fully charged capacity for the
charging from an external power source.
The time required to charge the hybrid battery (traction battery) differs
according to the charging vol tage and charging current.
*1: This is the maximum value. Furthermore, the upper limit of the charging
current can be changed in the “Vehicle Settings” settings. ( P. 1 2 9 )
*2: The time required for charging to complete depends on conditions such as
the remaining charge of the hybrid battery (traction battery) and the outside
temperature.
The following methods can be used to charge the hybrid battery
(traction battery).

WARNING
■If a safety system warning light does not come on
Should a safety system light such as the ABS and SRS warning li ght not
come on when you start the hybrid system, this could mean that these sys-
tems are not available to help protect you in an accident, whic h could result
in death or serious injury. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately if this occurs.
NOTICE
■ To prevent damage to the engine and its components
The engine may be overheating if the high coolant temperature warning
light comes on or flashes. In this case, immediately stop the vehicle in a
safe place, and check the engine after it has cooled completely . (P. 707)
