1622-1. Driving procedures
WARNING■ Exhaust gases
Exhaust gases include harmful carbon monoxide (CO), which is colorless
and odorless. Inhaling exhaust gases may lead to death or a ser ious health
hazard.
● If the vehicle is in a poorly ventilated area, stop the engine. In a closed
area, such as a garage, exhaust gases may collect and enter the vehicle.
This may lead to death or a serious health hazard.
● The exhaust system should be checked occasionally. If there is a hole or
crack caused by corrosion, damage to a joint or abnormal exhaus t noise,
be sure to have the vehicle inspected and repaired by your Toyota dealer.
Failure to do so may allow exhaust gases to enter the vehicle, resulting in
death or a serious health hazard.
■ When taking a nap in the vehicle
Always turn the engine off. Otherwise, you may accidentally mov e the shift
lever or depress the accelerator pedal, this could cause an acc ident or fire
due to engine overheating. Additionally, if the vehicle is park ed in a poorly
ventilated area, exhaust gases may collect and enter the vehicl e, leading to
death or a serious health hazard.

■ When the steering lock cannot be released
■ Steering lock motor o verheating prevention
To prevent the steering lock motor from overheating, the motor may be sus-
pended if the engine is turned on and off repeatedly in a short period of time.
In this case, refrain from operating the engine. After about 10 seconds, the
steering lock motor will resume functioning.
■ If the smart key system indicator flashes in yellow and a messa ge is
displayed on the multi-information display
The system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by your
Toyota dealer immediately.
■ If the electronic key battery is depleted

■ Immediately after reconnecting th e battery terminals due to rep lacing
the battery and so forth
The engine may not start. If this occurs, turn the “ENGINE STAR T STOP”
switch to IGNITION ON mode, and start the engine after waiting at least 10
seconds. Idling may be unstable immediately after the engine st arts, how-
ever, this is not a malfunction. The smart key system indicator light
(green) will flash quickly and a message
will be shown on the multi-information dis-

NOTICE■ Before driving
Fully release the parking brake.
Driving the vehicle with the parking brake set will lead to bra ke components
overheating, which may affect braking performance and increase brake
wear. To set the parking brake, fully pull the parking brake lever wh ile
depressing the brake pedal.
To release the parking brake, slightly raise the lever and lowe r it

Vehicles without a smart key system
The engine switch is in the “ON” position.
Vehicles with a smart key system
The “ENGINE START STOP” switch is in IGNITION ON mode.
■ The brightness of the i nstrument panel lights
When the parking lights or the headlights turn on, the instrume nt panel lights
will dim. However, when the instrument panel brightness control dial is
turned to the up most position, the instrument panel lights wil l not dim even
when the parking lights or headlights turn on.
NOTICE■ To prevent damage to the engine and its components
● Do not let the indicator needle of the tachometer enter the red zone, which
indicates the maximum engine speed.
● In the following situations, the engine may be overheating. In this case,
immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place, and check the eng ine after it
has cooled completely. (

• Vehicles with a monochrome multi-information display: The engi ne
coolant temperature gauge enters the red zone
• Vehicles with a color multi-information display: The high engine coolant
temperature warning light flashes or illuminates

2502-4. Using other driving systems
■ Reduced effectiveness of the EPS system
The effectiveness of the EPS system is reduced to prevent the s ystem from
overheating when there is frequent steering input over an exten ded period of
time. The steering wheel may feel heavy as a result. Should thi s occur,
refrain from excessive steering input or stop the vehicle and t urn the engine
off. The EPS system should return to normal after a little whil e.
■ Automatic deactivatio n of “TRACK” mode
Vehicles without a smart key system
When the engine switch is turned to “LOCK” position after drivi ng in
“TRACK” mode, the mode is automatically deactivated.
Vehicles with a smart key system
When the “ENGINE START STOP” switch is turned off after driving in
“TRACK” mode, the mode is automatically deactivated.
WARNING■ The ABS does not operate effectively when
● Tires with inadequate gripping ability are used (such as excess ively worn
tires on a snow covered road).
● The vehicle hydroplanes while driving at high speed on wet or s lick roads.
■ Stopping distance when the ABS is operating may exceed that of nor-
mal conditions
The ABS is not designed to shorten the vehicle’s stopping dista nce. Always
maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you in th e following situ-
ations:
● When driving on dirt, gravel or snow-covered roads
● When driving with tire chains
● When driving over bumps in the road
● When driving over roads with potholes or uneven surfaces

WARNING■ Burns
● Use caution when seating the following persons in a seat with t he seat
heater on to avoid the possibility of burns:
• Babies, small children, the elderly, the sick and the physical ly chal-
lenged
• Persons with sensitive skin
• Persons who are fatigued
• Persons who have taken alcohol or drugs that induce sleep (sle eping
drugs, cold remedies, etc.)
● Do not cover the seat with anything when using the seat heater.
Using the seat heater with a blanket or cushion increases the temperature
of the seat and may lead to overheating.
● Do not use the seat heater more than necessary. Doing so may ca use
minor burns or overheating.
NOTICE■ To prevent seat heater damage
Do not put heavy objects that have an uneven surface on the sea t and do
not stick sharp objects (needles, nails, etc.) into the seat.
■ To prevent battery discharge
Turn the seat heaters off when the engine is not running.

3965-2. Steps to take in an emergency
Stop the vehicle immediately.
The following warning indicates the possibility of damage to th e vehi-
cle that may lead to an acciden t. Immediately stop the vehicle in a

Indicates a malfunction in the vehicle’s charging system.
Low engine oil pressure warning light
Indicates that the engine oil pressure is too low.
(Flashes or illu-
minates in red) High engine coolant temper ature warning light (if
equipped)

As the engine coolant temperature increases, this warning
light will change from flashing to constantly illuminated.
