vehicle at all times.
∙ There is a limitation to the RAB system capability. The RAB system is not ef-
fective in all situations.
The RAB system can assist the driver when
the vehicle is backing up and approaching
objects directly behind the vehicle. The RAB system detects obstacles behind
the vehicle using the parking sensors

located on the rear bumper.
NOTE:
You can temporarily cancel the sonar
function in the vehicle, but the RAB sys-
tem will continue to operate. For addi-
tional information, please refer to “Rear
Sonar System (RSS)” in this section.

RAB SYSTEM OPERATION
When the shif t lever is in the R (Reverse)
position and the vehicle speed is less than
approximately 9 mph (15 km/h), the RAB
system operates.
If a risk of a collision with an obstacle is de-
tected when your vehicle is backing up, the
RAB system warning indicator will flash in
the vehicle information display, a red frame
will appear in the center display (for vehicles
with the Intelligent Around View Monitor sys-
tem), and the system will chime three times.
The system will then automatically apply the
brakes. Af ter the automatic brake applica-
tion, the driver must depress the brake pedal
to maintain brake pressure.
NOTE: ∙ The brake lights of the vehicle come
on when braking is performed by the
RAB system.
∙ When the brakes operate, a noise may
be heard. This is not a malfunction.

TURNING THE RAB SYSTEM
ON/OFF
Perform the following steps to turn the RAB
system ON or OFF.1. Press the
button until “Settings”
displays in the vehicle information dis-
play. Use the
button to select
“Driver Assistance.” Then press the OK
button.
2. Select “Driving Aids” and press the OK button.
3. Select “Emergency Brake” and press the OK button.
4. To set the RAB system to on or off, use the OK button to check the box for
“Rear.”
When the RAB system is turned off, the RAB
system warning light illuminates.
NOTE:
The RAB system will be automatically
turned on when the hybrid system is re-
started.

RAB SYSTEM LIMITATIONS
WARNING
Listed below are the system limitations
for the RAB system. Failure to follow the
warnings and instructions for proper
use of the RAB system could result in
serious injury or death.
∙ When the vehicle approaches an ob-stacle while the accelerator or brake
pedal is depressed, the function may
not operate or the start of the opera-
tion may be delayed. The RAB system
may not operate or may not perform
sufficiently due to vehicle conditions,
driving conditions, the traffic environ-
ment, the weather, road surface con-
ditions, etc. Do not wait for the system
to operate. Operate the brake pedal
by yourself as soon as necessary.
∙ If it is necessary to override RAB op- eration, strongly press the accelerator
pedal. ∙ Always check your surroundings and
turn to check what is behind you be-
fore and while backing up. The RAB
system detects stationary objects be-
hind the vehicle. The RAB system does
not detect the following objects:
– Moving objects
– Low objects
– Narrow objects
– Wedge-shaped objects
– Objects close to the bumper (less than approximately 1 f t [30 cm])
– Objects that suddenly appear
– Thin objects such as rope, wire, chain, etc.
∙ The RAB system may not operate for the following obstacles:
– Obstacles located high off the ground
– Obstacles in a position offset from your vehicle
– Obstacles, such as spongy materi- als or snow, that have sof t outer
surfaces and can easily absorb a
sound wave ∙ The RAB system may not operate in
the following conditions:
– There is rain, snow, ice, dirt, etc., at- tached to the sonar sensors.
– A loud sound is heard in the area around the vehicle.
– The surface of the obstacle is di- agonal to the rear of the vehicle.
∙ The RAB system may unintentionally operate in the following conditions:
– There is overgrown grass in the area around the vehicle.
– There is a structure (e.g., a wall, toll gate equipment, a narrow tunnel, a
parking lot gate) near the side of
the vehicle.
– There are bumps, protrusions, or manhole covers on the road
surface.
– The vehicle drives through a draped flag or a curtain.
– There is an accumulation of snow or ice behind the vehicle.
– An ultrasonic wave source, such as another vehicle’s sonar, is near the
vehicle.

∙ Once the automatic brake control op-erates, it does not operate again if the
vehicle approaches the same
obstacle.
∙ The automatic brake control can only operate for a short period of time.
Therefore, the driver must depress
the brake pedal.
∙ In the following situations, the RAB system may not operate properly or
may not function sufficiently:
– The vehicle is driven in bad weather (rain, fog, snow, etc.).
– The vehicle is driven on a steep hill.
– The vehicle’s posture is changed (e.g., when driving over a bump).
– The vehicle is driven on a slippery road.
– The vehicle is turned sharply by turning the steering wheel fully.
– Snow chains are used.
– Wheels or tires other than NISSAN recommended are used. – The brakes are cold at low ambient
temperatures or immediately af ter
driving has started.
– The braking force becomes poor due to wet brakes af ter driving
through a puddle or washing the
vehicle.
∙ Turn the RAB system off in the follow- ing conditions to prevent the occur-
rence of an unexpected accident re-
sulting from sudden system
operation:
– The vehicle is towed.
– The vehicle is carried on a flatbed truck.
– The vehicle is on the chassis dynamometer.
– The vehicle drives on an uneven road surface.
– Suspension parts other than those designated as genuine parts are
used. (If the vehicle height or the
vehicle body inclination is
changed, the system may not de-
tect an obstacle correctly.) ∙ Excessive noise (e.g., audio system
volume, an open vehicle window) will
interfere with the chime sound, and it
may not be heard.
SYSTEM MALFUNCTION
If the RAB system malfunctions, it will be
turned off automatically, the RAB system
warning light will illuminate, and the “Sys-
tem fault” warning message will appear in
the vehicle information display.
Action to take
If the warning light illuminates, park the ve-
hicle in a safe location, turn the hybrid sys-
tem off, and restart the hybrid system. If the
warning light continues to illuminate, have
the RAB system checked. It is recom-
mended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for
this service.
NOTE:
If the RAB system cannot be operated
temporarily, the RAB system warning
light blinks.

∙ Your vehicle will reach its ideal oper-ating temperature more quickly
while driving versus idling.
10. Keeping your Vehicle Cool
∙ Park your vehicle in a covered parking area or in the shade whenever pos-
sible.
∙ When entering a hot vehicle, opening the windows will help to reduce the
inside temperature faster, resulting in
reduced demand on your A/C sys-
tem. ∙ Keep your engine tuned up.
∙ Follow the recommended scheduled
maintenance.
∙ Keep the tires inflated to the correct pressure. Low tire pressure increases
tire wear and lowers fuel economy.
∙ Keep all the wheels in correct align- ment. Improper alignment increases
tire wear and lowers fuel economy.
∙ Use the recommended viscosity engine oil. For additional information, refer to
“Engine oil and oil filter recommenda-
tions” in the “Technical and consumer
information” section of this manual. If any malfunction occurs in the AWD sys-
tem while the engine is running, the master
warning light will come on.
The master warning light may illuminate
while trying to free a stuck vehicle due to
high powertrain oil temperature. The driv-
ing mode may change to 2–Wheel Drive.
AUTO mode may change to LOCK mode
before the warning light illuminates. If the
master warning light illuminates during
operation, stop the vehicle with the engine
idling in a safe place immediately. Then, if
the light turns off af ter a while, you can
continue driving.
A large difference between the diameters
of the front and rear wheels will make the
warning light illuminate. Pull off the road in
a safe area and idle the engine. Check that
all tire sizes are the same, tire pressure is
correct, and the tires are not worn.

∙ If the warning light comes on while driving, there may be a malfunction in
the AWD system. Reduce the vehicle
speed and have your vehicle checked
as soon as possible. It is recom-
mended that you visit a NISSAN dealer
for this service.
∙ The powertrain may be damaged if you continue driving with the warning
light illuminated.
∙ Never drive on dry, hard surface roads in the LOCK mode, as this will overload
the powertrain and may cause a seri-
ous malfunction.
WARNING
∙ For AWD equipped vehicles, do not at-tempt to raise two wheels off the
ground and shif t the transmission to
any drive or reverse position with the
engine running. Doing so may result
in drivetrain damage or unexpected
vehicle movement which could result
in serious vehicle damage or personal
injury.
∙ Do not attempt to test an AWD equipped vehicle on a 2–wheel dyna-
mometer (such as the dynamometers
used by some states for emissions
testing) or similar equipment even if
the other two wheels are raised off the
ground. Make sure that you inform
the test facility personnel that your
vehicle is equipped with AWD before it
is placed on a dynamometer. Using
the wrong test equipment may result
in drivetrain damage or unexpected
vehicle movement which could result
in serious vehicle damage or personal
injury.
ALL-WHEEL DRIVE (AWD) LOCK
SWITCH OPERATIONS
The AWD LOCK switch is located on the
lower side of the instrument panel. This
switch is used to select the AUTO or LOCK
mode depending on the driving conditions.
LOCK mode:
The AWD LOCK indicator light will illumi-
nate.
AUTO mode:
The AWD LOCK indicator light will turn off.

the front and rear wheels can be dis-
played in the video information display.
∙ If the AWD LOCK switch is operated while accelerating or decelerating, or if
the ignition switch is placed in the OFF
position, you may feel a jolt. This is nor-
mal.
∙ The oil temperature of the powertrain parts will increase if the vehicle is con-
tinuously operated under conditions
where the difference in rotation be-
tween the front and rear wheels is large
(wheel slip), such as when driving the
vehicle on rough roads or through sand
or mud or freeing a stuck vehicle. In
these cases, the master warning light
illuminates and the AWD mode
changes to 2–Wheel Drive to protect the
powertrain parts. Stop driving with the
engine idling and wait until the warning
light turns off and the AWD returns to
the AUTO mode. If the warning light re-
mains on, have your vehicle checked as
soon as possible. It is recommended
that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this
service.
