The brake assist system is a device assisting drivers who cannot depress the brake pedal firmly such as in em
ergency stop situations
and provides greater braking force. If the brake pedal is depressed suddenly, the brakes will be applied with more force thanusual.
CAUTION Do not overly rely on the hill start assist to prevent backwards movement of the vehicle.Under certain circumstances, even when hillstart assist is activated, the vehicle may move backwards if the brake pedal is not suf- ficiently depressed, if
the vehicle is heavily
loaded, or if the road is very steep or slip- pery. The hill start assist is not designed to keep the vehicle stopped in place on uphill slopes for more than 2 seconds. When facing uphill, do not rely on using the hill start assist to
maintain a stopped position
as an alternative to depressing the brake pedal. Doing so could cause an accident. Do not turn the ignition switch to the “OFF”, “LOCK” or “ACC” position while the hillstart assist is operating. The hill start assist could stop operating,
which could result in
an accident.
To operate

 The hill start assist is activated when all of the following c
onditions are met.
• The engine is running. (The hill start assist
will not be activated
while the engine is st
arting or immediately
after the engine is started.) • The selector lever is
in any position other
than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). • The vehicle is comple
tely stationary, with
the brake pedal depressed. • The parking brake is released.  The hill start assist wi
ll not operate if the
accelerator pedal is
depressed before the
brake pedal is released.  The hill start assist also operates when reversing on an uphill slope.

CAUTION If the warning is displayed, the hill start assist will not
operate. Start off carefully.
Park your vehicle in a
safe place and stop the
engine.Restart the engine and check whether the indicator/display goes out

hill start assist is again working normally. If they remain displayed or reappear fre- quently, it is not necessa
ry to stop the vehicle
immediately, but th

Under normal conditions, the anti-lock brak-ing system warning light only comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or the operation mode is put in ONand goes off a few seconds later.

During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicl

vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This f
unction will make the
steering wheel gradually harder to turn. In this event, limit your turning of the steering wheel for a while. When the system hascooled down, the steering effort will return to normal.  If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with
the headlights on, the
headlights may become
dim. This behavior
is not abnormal. The he
adlights will return to
their original brightne
ss after a short while.

ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four wheels. Otherwise, the ASC may not work properly. Do not install any aftermarket limited slip differential (LSD) on yo
ur vehicle. The ASC
may stop functioning properly.
NOTE
 An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa-tions. The sound is associated with checkingthe operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if you depress it. These do not indicate a malfunc-tion. • When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.
 When the ASC is acti
vated, you may feel a
vibration in the vehicle body or hear a whin- ing sound from the engine compartment. This indicates that the system is operatingnormally. It does not i
ndicate a malfunction.
 When the anti-lock braking system warning light is illuminated, the ASC is not active.

The skid control function is designed to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle on slippery roads or during rapid steeringmaneuvers. It works by controlling the engine output and the brake on each wheel.

The ASC is automatically activated when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” posi-tion. You can deactivate
the system by press-
ing down the ASC OFF switch for 3 seconds or longer. When the ASC is deactivated, the indica- tor will turn on. To reactivate the ASC, momentarily press the ASC OFF switch; the indicator is turned off.

Skid control function
NOTE
 The skid control function operates at speeds of about 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher.

CAUTION For safety reasons, the ASC OFF switch should be operated when your vehicle isstopped.  Be sure to keep the ASC on while driving in normal circumstances.
NOTE
 Using the ASC OFF switch turns off both the stability control func
tion and the traction
control function.  When moving out of mud, sand or fresh snow, pressing the accelerator pedal may notallow the engine speed to increase. In such situations, temporarily turning off ASC with the ASC OFF switch will make it easier tomove out your vehicle.  If you continue to pre
ss the ASC OFF switch
after the ASC is turned off, the “mistaken operation protection f
unction” will activate
and the ASC will turn back on.

control on a slippery road surface, the indicator will blink. To prevent the brake system from overheat-ing, the brake control of the traction control function will be te
mporarily suspended.

 When a spare tire has been put on your vehi- cle, the gripping ability of the tire will be lower, making it more likely that the dis- play/indicator will blink.

vated at speeds from approximately 25 mph (40 km/h). Cruise cont

want to stay at your set speed.  Your speed may increase to more than the set speed on a steep downhill. You have to use the brake to control your speed. As a result, the set speed driving is deactivated.

speed, then push down and release the“SET -” switch (B) when the indica- tor/indicator display is illuminated. The vehicle will then maintain the desiredspeed. The “SET” indicator appears on the infor- mation screen in the meter cluster. (Forvehicles equipped with

There are two ways to increase the set speed.
Push up and hold the “RES +” switch (C) while driving at the se
t speed, and your speed
will then gradually increase. When you reach your desired speed, releasethe switch. Your new
cruising speed is now
set. To increase your speed in small amounts, push up the “RES +” switch (C) for less than approximately 1 second and release it.Each time you press the “RES +” switch (C), your vehicle will go approximately 1 mph (1.6 km/h) faster.
While driving at the set speed, use the accel- erator pedal to reach
your desired speed and
then push down the “SET -” switch (B) and release the switch momentarily to set a newdesired cruising speed.
