The anti-lock braking system and brake force distribution function ma
y not work, so hard
braking could make the vehicle unstable. Avoid hard braking and high-speed driving. Stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact anauthorized Mitsubishi Mo
tors dealer or repair
facility of your choice.

After driving on snow
or icy roads, remove
any snow and ice whic
h may have be left
around the wheels. On vehicles that have an anti-lock braking syst
em, be careful not to
damage the wheel spee
d sensors (A) or the
cables located at each wheel.
N00568401084
The power steering system operates while theengine is running. It helps reduce the effort needed to turn the steering wheel. The power steering system has mechanicalsteering capability in ca
se the power assist is
lost. If the power assist is lost for some rea- son, you will still be ab
le to steer your vehi-
cle, but you will notice it takes much more effort to steer. If this happens, have your vehi- cle inspected at an authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

Electric power steering sys- tem (EPS) Front Rear
WA R N I N G Do not stop the engine while the vehicle is moving. Stopping the engine would makethe steering wheel extremely hard to turn, possibly resulting
in an ac
cident.
NOTE
During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicl
e into a parking
space), a protection
function may be acti-
vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This f
unction will make the
steering wheel gradually harder to turn. In this event, limit your turning of the steering wheel for a while. When the system hascooled down, the steering effort will return to normal. If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with
the headlights on, the
headlights may become
dim. This behavior
is not abnormal. The he
adlights will return to
their original brightne
ss after a short while.

Warning display If there is a malfunction in the system, the warning light will come on and the warning display will appear on
the information screen
in the multi information display.Under normal conditions, the warning light come on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or
the operation mode is
put in ON, and goes off after the engine has started.

On slippery surfaces,
the traction control
function prevents the drive wheels from spin- ning excessive, thus
helping the vehicle to
start moving from a stopped condition. It alsoprovides sufficient driving force and steering performance as the vehicle turns while press- ing the acceleration pedal.
CAUTION If the warning displa
y appears while the
engine is running, have
the vehicle inspected
by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as possible. It may become harder to turn thesteering wheel.
Active stability control (ASC)
CAUTION Do not over-rely on the ASC. Even the ASC cannot prevent the natural laws of physicsfrom acting on the vehicle. This system, like any other system, has li
mits and cannot help
you to maintain traction and control of thevehicle in all circumstances. Reckless driv- ing can lead to accident
s. It is the driver’s
responsibillty to drive carefully, This meanstaking into account the tr
affic, road and envi-
ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four wheels. Otherwise, the ASC may not work properly. Do not install any aftermarket limited slip differential (LSD) on yo
ur vehicle. The ASC
may stop functioning properly.
NOTE
An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa-tions. The sound is associated with checkingthe operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if you depress it. These do not indicate a malfunc-tion. • When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.
When the ASC is acti
vated, you may feel a
vibration in the vehicle body or hear a whin- ing sound from the engine compartment. This indicates that the system is operatingnormally. It does not i
ndicate a malfunction.
When the anti-lock braking system warning light is illuminated, the ASC is not active.

The skid control function is designed to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle on slippery roads or during rapid steeringmaneuvers. It works by controlling the engine output and the brake on each wheel.
N00559401307
The ASC is automatically activated when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” posi-tion. You can deactivate
the system by press-
ing down the ASC OFF switch for 3 seconds or longer. When the ASC is deactivated, the indica- tor will turn on. To reactivate the ASC, momentarily press the ASC OFF switch; the indicator is turned off.
N00559501249
CAUTION When driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy road, be sure to install snow tires and drivethe vehicle at moderate speeds.
Skid control function
NOTE
The skid control function operates at speeds of about 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher.
ASC OFF switch
CAUTION For safety reasons, the ASC OFF switch should be operated when your vehicle isstopped. Be sure to keep the ASC on while driving in normal circumstances.
NOTE
Using the ASC OFF switch turns off both the stability control func
tion and the traction
control function. When moving out of mud, sand or fresh snow, pressing the accelerator pedal may notallow the engine speed to increase. In such situations, temporarily turning off ASC with the ASC OFF switch will make it easier tomove out your vehicle. If you continue to pre
ss the ASC OFF switch
after the ASC is turned off, the “mistaken operation protection f
unction” will activate
and the ASC will turn back on.

If the set speed driving is deactivated by the condition described in “To deactivate” on page 5-105, you can resume the previouslyset speed by push up the “RES +” switch (C) while driving at a speed of approximately 25 mph (40 km/h) or higher. The “SET” indicator appears on the informa- tion screen in the meter
cluster. (For vehicles
equipped with the color
liquid crystal display
meter) Under either of the following conditions, however, using the switch does not allow you to resume the previously set speed. In these situations, repeat the
speed setting procedure:
The CRUISE CONTROL ON/OFF switch is pressed. The operation mode is put in OFF. Indicator goes off.
N00576800048
ACC maintains a set speed with no need for you to use the accelera
tor pedal. Using a sen-
sor (A), the system also measures the relative speed and distance betw
een your vehicle and
a vehicle in front, and maintains a set follow-ing distance between
your vehicle and the
vehicle in front by automatically decelerating your vehicle if it becomes too close to the vehicle in front. The cruising set speed can be set from 25mph (40 km/h) to 110 mph (180 km/h). The distance can be select
ed from three levels.
If the vehicle in front decelerates, the ACCwill automatically apply limited braking to maintain the distance, a
nd if the front vehicle
then accelerates, the ACC will automaticallyaccelerate your vehicle up to the set speed. If your vehicle is approa
ching too close to the
front vehicle, a buzzer
will sound and a warn-
ing is shown in the multi information display. When the ACC detects no vehicle ahead, the set speed will be maintained.Conventional cruise cont
rol mode without the
distance control can also be selected. Stop lights are illuminated during automaticbraking.

(if so equipped)
WA R N I N G Before using the ACC, read this entire sec- tion to understand th
e limitations of this
system. Failure to follow instructions could result in an accident. Never rely solely on the ACC. The ACC is not a collision avoidance system or an automatic driving system. It is designed touse only limited brak
ing and is never a
substitute for your safe and careful driv- ing. Always be ready to apply the brakesmanually.

When the front vehicl
e stops, the ACC will
automatically apply th
e brakes to stop your
vehicle. A few seconds after your vehicle has stopped, the ACC will release the brakes and your vehicle will start to
move or creep slowly.
You must apply the brakes to keep your vehi-cle stationary.
When the ACC no longer detects a vehicle in front, the buzzer will sound, the vehicle sym-bol in the display will disappear and your vehicle will slowly accelerate to the set speed.
NOTE
If the brake pedal is not depressed within 2 seconds after your vehi
cle has been stopped
by the ACC, a warning buzzer will sound, the above warning will be shown in the multi information display to alert the driver, and the ACC control wi
ll be canceled.
When depressing the brake pedal while the automatic brake is applied, the brake pedalwill feel firm. This is normal. Depress the brake pedal harder to apply greater braking force. During the automatic
braking, operation
sounds may be heard. This is normal.WA R N I N G Never leave the vehicle while it is being stopped by the ACC.
WA R N I N G Your vehicle may accelerate up to the set speed in the following situations. Apply the brake, if necess
ary, to slow down.
• When your vehicle no longer follows the vehicle in front, e.g. at a freeway exit orwhen your vehicle or
the vehicle in front
changes its lane.• When driving on a curve.

When any of the following conditions are present, the ACC cont
rol cannot be resumed.
• When your vehicle speed is lower than approximately 6 mph (10 km/h) or higher than 110 mph (180 km/h). • When your vehicle is driven at speeds between approximately 6 mph (10 km/h)and 25 mph (40 km/h) and the ACC is not detecting a vehi
cle in front.
• When ASC is in the OFF position. • While ABS, ASC or TCL is activated.• When the selector leve
r is in positions other
than “D” (DRIVE) and “Ds” (DOWN-SHIFT & SPORTY DRIVING). • While the brake pedal is depressed.• While the parking brake is applied. • When the ACC system has judged that the performance for detect
ing a front vehicle is
degraded. • When an abnormality
in the ACC system
has been detected.
